Motivation, what drives

us?

Vladimir Tarasoff
Pls, recheck your English. Twice. :) Some phrases look like they're just written using English words. On the other hand, I'm kind of Grammar Nazi, so don't take my comments too seriously. We're not at conference on lingiustics. ;)
Vladimir Tarasoff
BTW, as far as I wrote so much on how the presentation should be. Don't you think you can speak at Agile Tour Riga on next year at Agile Riga Day conference? This topic might be quite interesting in case it will be refined with some example from your projects at Tele2.(in that case may be Tele2 will going for Platinum sponsorship? ;) )
Leonid Uljankin
Sure this might be interesting as for T2 sponsorship, we are not there yet ;)

Purpose• To find out what makes Agile so attractive to

human beings, what motivates us, taking SCRUM as one example

Vladimir Tarasoff
1. Find out what inside us made Agile methodologies so attractive to be used.2. Where the effectiveness of them is hidden? Is it really within us?Questions should make a kind of intrigue you know, otherwise they might be boring.
Leonid Uljankin
updated wording a bit, boring somethimes is what we need, beacuse all can understand what we want to say :)

Our rules – work agreement

• Language?• Mobile phones?

Vladimir Tarasoff
Suggest to remove last sentence and the rule #1 out of slide. The speaker should suggest and help audience to THINK and decide, but not to AGREE with suggestions. This issues can be presented as an example. Not more than 5 mins. The lesser the better.
Leonid Uljankin
done and done!

Introduction• Name tags – folding exercise • Each person introduces second person and puts

expectations for second person to flipchart

Vladimir Tarasoff
This slide should be named as 'Introduction' and that's enough. The other stuff shoul be explained by speaker. This make sence because the event shouldn't be like slide reading. It's better to explain the idea within the slide using pictures. For example: http://www.expats-moving-and-relocation-guide.com/images/japanese-greeting-21257588.jpg
Leonid Uljankin
Yep, agreed.

Life is great – listening break

• Explain and draw life is great pyramid

Vladimir Tarasoff
better to start with this slide. it will help to box the way people think, make some borders, recall this idea applying it to the common life.
Leonid Uljankin
Sure, that makes sence to me.
Page 6: Agile motivation v6

Exercise• Work in pairs and in five minutes prepare be

ready to explain to us in maximum two short sentences: o why do you think we believe that basics used

to organize productive work environment in our organization do sound like below,

o and why we believe those are motivating people.

Vladimir Tarasoff
should ask 1st do people remember them from (yes, again) Agile Manifesto and write them on flipchart or it may be done with the help of the audience. after this kind of intro the question can be introduced. it'll be better to make a separate slide for each of the question and make a discussion by asking people (should be done by speaker and/or moderator) instead of work in pairs.as to me they will sound better that way:2. Why the task isn't assigned, but the person himself shows the commitment to work on it? (clear and good example of the main idea of the presentation)1. Why the user story describes the need of some person or group of people instead of straightforward list of operations to gain the result? (tentative about it, 'cause it's about WHY thing more than about persons will to be usefull doing smth)3. Why it's important for the team to present product made to the customer or end user? (tentative abt this too, 'cause it's aimed for fast feedback and compliance to DoD more than for self/team satiscation. however, self satisfaction can be proved via discussion either.).
Leonid Uljankin
right, I have rephrased the questions as you have suggested, but I would want to still keep with format sugegsted in the first place. It produces more involvement then any other way to handle this.Added slide on Agile manifesto before this slide. Need to think how to make it interactive...
Page 7: Agile motivation v6

Questions part oneo Why the task isn't assigned, but a person

shows the commitment to work on it?o Why the user story describes the need of some

person or group of people, instead of straightforward list of operations to gain the result?

o Why a proper user story always has a part that describes how the end product will affect other people life's?

Page 8: Agile motivation v6

Part twoo Why on most of SCRUM meetings, all team

members should give status, feedback, take tasks themselves?

o Why on planning meeting it is must, to have a PO - that can explain why we need to do this work and how it will change other people life's?

o Why do we need to monitor our work progress in one way or another?

Vladimir Tarasoff
Never heard abt AGILE rituals, just abt SCRUM ritual which are not the same thing, actually. most of the audience might know this fact. So why don't just name all of Scrum rituals in brief and explain their purpose through the discussion of questions below and during the retro?
Vladimir Tarasoff
The same stuff. Better to continue with question in the way described earlier.and here some comments on these questions:1. why do you think it's a rule? that's true for Scrum by the book, actually. partially true for XP and somewhat true for Kanban alike process. I suggest to talk abt Scrum and not dive into Agile practices in general. 2. Well, that's also not very true. Sometimes it's ok to have a PO instead of customers/stackholders, oe even better to have a PO instead of bunch of stackeholders with different priorities on product to be made. You'd better be ready to prove this statement.3. Yet again do we really need to monitor progress? Why don't we monitor the current state of the value chain? Or how the service process can be monitored? Don't stick to Scrum too much or talk only abt it. Guess the 2nd option will be better.
Leonid Uljankin
Sure, makes sense, let's stick to SCRUM and I have also rephrased the question in the way that this is just an author opinion rather then industry standart.
Page 9: Agile motivation v6

Part threeo Who wants to take this task?o What did we do, or not do, to achieve this

results?o What is your opinion on how this should be

done?o How the work we do will matter in other people

life's?o What is the end product we do?

Vladimir Tarasoff
Heh. Think about that:These questions are not about Agile. These question a clever one can use to have his work done by manipulating other people. They're kind of manipulators used upon the communication.
Leonid Uljankin
Not in my world. Those questions are meant for people to grow as profeccionals, to try new stuff and get more freedom. Those are more of the Coaching questions.

Break - theater exercise

Vladimir Tarasoff
No idea do we really need it. It's up too you.
Leonid Uljankin
It is fun :)
Page 11: Agile motivation v6

One man’s opinion• I call it: “feeling of self importance” and it is

related to one of the Dale’s Carnegie’s books…

Searching for zero point motivator

Vladimir Tarasoff
Please, explain what 'Motivator zero' means. It looks like some new thing invented by you, so it needs an explanation. On the other hand may be it, this motivator you're writing about, must be a conclusion drawn during the retro.
Leonid Uljankin
Done!
