FORENSIC ARCHITECTURE REPORTS� Davis-Gary and Moses Dormitories - Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.

Constructed in 1920� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Water in-migration within one year of renovation� Report disclosed poor workmanship in the application of membrane

flashings of the cast stone roof copings. � Samples of masonry wall cubes revealed that the cutting and point

operations used incompatible mortars and head joints were not filled.

� New Addition to Duncan Dining Hall - Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Original Building Constructed in 1930. Addition Constructed in 1988� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Water In-migration began within 6 months ofconstruction

� Report disclosed poor workmanship in the application of membraneflashings of the parapet walls and improper membrane was used in that themembrane had deteriorated.

� Samples of masonry wall cubes revealed that head and bed joints were notfilled and that the mortar droppings had filled the cavity bottom not allowingwater to drain through the weep holes.

� Hass & McFadden Modular Dormitories - Texas A&M University, College Station,Texas. Constructed in 1988� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Water In-migration within one year of renovation� Report disclosed that construction of the concrete shell modules were not as

designed by the engineers resulting in a deflection of the unit ends. Theexterior steel stud curtain walls were being pinched allowing wind drivenwater to penetrate the perimeter joints. Stucco walls were absorbing water,growing mold and leaking into students closets.

� Architecture Building “C” - Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Constructedin 1965� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Water In-migration through stone cladding� Report disclosed that the stone hangers experienced various stages of

deterioration and were not as specified. � Examinations of failed areas indicated that the joint sealants had no

attention since construction.

� Heldenfelds Hall - Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Constructed in 1982� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Units form the masonry veneer were falling from building� Report disclosed poor workmanship in the application of masonry veneer at

the locations of steel angle lintels. � Visual investigation revealed that the locations of lintels and floor shelf angles

did not aligning with the vertical coursing of the masonry units and the steelwas not properly supported. Loading of the steel was passing to the veneerscausing the units literally pop off under the pressure.

� Bio-Science and Biophysics Building - Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Constructed in 1989� Project Responsibilities:

� Primary Investigator - Water In-migration within six month of occupancy.� Report disclosed poor workmanship in the application of membrane

flashings and the of the masonry at the soldier belt coursing at the floor shelfangles.

� Samples of masonry wall cubes revealed that although the head and jointlook good from the exterior, they were not filled thus allowing wind drivenwater to penetrate.

� The cavity at the shelf angle was full of mortar up to 8 inches high restrictingwater from draining to the exterior.

� Hines Residence - McKinney, Texas - 1982� Project Responsibilities:

� Project Scope:� Three Bedroom and Two bath log home� Vaulted Bedroom Ceilings� Open kitchen, eating and family room combined with cathedral ceilings� Carport, Storage and Laundry Room� 1800 SF of heated living space

� Design Concept:� Orient plan so the expanse of log walls would absorb the sun’s heat in the

winter and pass it into the rooms at night.� Vaulted Ceilings would hold the heat, ceilings fans would move the heat.� The same orientation would reduce the summer heating by having cool

rooms during the day. Quarry tile floors would add cooling affect.� Three ton cooling and propane gas heat

� Benefit:� Log construction reduce overall construction cost by 20%.� Due to 1 acre corner lot and orientation, thermostat was maintained at 80

degrees during summer and 68 degrees during winter. � Very comfortable inside� Very low maintenance� Total cost of construction including lot $85,000 - $47.22 PSF.

and Park Maintenance Storage - 2,100 SF� Construction System utilized glazed CMU walls and SIPs for roof, gable ends

and demising partitions above CMU.� Parking Lot, Storm water Management, New Sanitary Sewer and Water Lines� Replace Exiting Sanitary Sewer Main.� Site Area: Six Acres - $1.3 Million

� Benefit:� Glazed CMU required no additional finishes after installation and virtually no

maintenance for the out years.� Utilizing SIPs enabled the building to be enclosed and the roof shingles to be

installed in two days.� Utilizing SIPs required a small supplemental electric heater for the plumbing

chase and the open design afforded natural cooling during the year.� Snack Bar required cooling and hood exhaust.
