2 0 1 7 SWIM BAND GUIDELINES During recreational swims, a swim check is mandatory for all children ages 12 and under who wish to swim without arm’s reach adult supervision in the pool. He or she must pass a shallow water swim check at a minimum. Wristband assignment is determined by the Lifeguards on duty. There are two different types of swim checks that determine the boundaries and banding of the swimmer: 1) The deep water swim check and 2) The shallow water swim check. Yellow bands allow children to only go in the shallow end, green bands allow children to swim anywhere in both pools. At the Lifeguard’s discretion, adults may be swim checked to determine the ability and supervision requirements. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AQUA EXERCISE AGES 12+ Formerly known as Adaptive Fitness, this low-impact water workout is designed for rehabilitation as well as improving range of motion and flexibility. Moves are adapted to individual fitness and movement abilities. Beginners and older adults. AQUA PILATES AGES 12+ Designed to use water's natural resistance to increase the body's full range of motion while stabilizing the core muscles. The mind-body workout incorporates movements based on the Pilates method. AQUA VIVASIA AGES 12+ Boost your fat burning potential in this aqua aerobic fitness program designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance. Enjoy a variety of dance styles and music including Bollywood, drum, fan dance, and more. The added benefits of exercising in water makes aqua workouts safe and fun without impact to the joints. All fitness levels welcome. AQUA ZUMBA ® AGES 12+ This invigorating water class combines the popularity and benefits of Zumba with traditional aquatic exercise disciplines. This is a high-intensity, low-impact workout. Beginners and older adults. INDIVIDUAL ADULT GENTLE EXERCISE AGES 12+ Reserved for gentle lap swimming, water running and water walking. MASTERS SWIM AGES 12+ A coached fitness class. Participants must swim a minimum of 1500 yards to participate; workouts generally consist of 1800-2500 yards. SHALLOW WATER EXERCISE AGES 12+ This low-impact water workout utilizes a shallow water environment to improve cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Appropriate for beginners and older adults. ADVANCED AQUA EXERCISE AGES 12+ A high-intensity fitness class using the natural resistance of the water and your body weight to strengthen and challenge your body, while incorporating aqua weights, noodles, and rebound movements. Designed to improve cardiovascular health, endurance, and muscular strength. Appropriate for all fitness levels, with modifications. AQUA YOGA AGES 12+ This low-impact class class teaches yoga poses and breathing techniques that have been adapted for water and will help you improve mobility and fitness with minimal joint pain or fatigue. Appropriate for beginners and older adults. DEEP WATER EXERCISE AGES 12+ This class replicates weight-bearing exercises in the non-weight-bearing environment of a deep water pool This is a high-intensity, low-impact workout. HIRING AND TRAINING LIFEGUARDS AND SWIM INSTRUCTORS 15+ Apply online at ymcasv.org/paloalto OTHER ACTIVITIES OPEN SWIM/OPEN LANES ALL AGES Reserved for casual and recreation swim. Youth ages 8-12 must pass a swim test to participate without direct adult supervision and to enter the deep side of the pool. Youth under age 8 must be directly supervised by a member at least 16 years old. Lifeguard to member ratio is 1:25. PRIVATE LESSONS/TRAINING ALL AGES Private swim lessons are offered various time throughout the day. Space is shared for private swim lessons. SWIM TEAM/SWIM CLUB AGES 4-16 The Duck Swim Club and Swim Team is for more advanced swimmers who are ready for a more challenging swimming experience. SWIM LESSONS ALL AGES Our swim lessons build skills, confidence and character. We teach people of all ages and abilities how to be safe in the water while staying active and having fun. Financial assistance is available, please inquire with the front desk. CIRCLE SWIM ETIQUETTE Circleswimmingisthemostefficientandsafestwaytoswiminalanewithotherindividuals. It also allows proper and quick regulation of lane speeds.Note: Lifeguardsmonitorthelanesandmayaltertheconfigurationatanytime.Iftheyaskyou to move a lane, it is to better accommodate all swimmers, including yourself.

• Choosealaneappropriateforyourswimming pace. Lane speeds may besubjecttotheindividualsinthepoolatany given time.

• Swimmersshouldswimsinglefileandcounter clockwise (down the right side ofthe lane).

• If there are swimmers approaching the wallas you are preparing to enter, wait untiltheyhaveturnedandstartedthenextlapbefore entering the water, so as not tointerrupt their progress.

• When swimming, stop only at the wall.Once stopped, stay in the corner of thelane, preferably in the right hand corner.

• Slow swimmers must yield to fasterswimmers.

• Beawareofthespaceinyourlaneand orientation of others. If you areapproaching the wall and another lapswimmer is gaining on you and swimmingat a faster rate than you are, pause at thewall to allow the faster swimmer(s) to pass.

• When needing to pass an individual, before you reach the wall, gently tap on that individual's foot to signal you are passing. If your foot is tapped on, you should wait at the wall, allowing the swimmer behind you to pass.
