For Senate Approval – Major Modifications

1) Dual Degree Agreement – Swansea University A new dual degree is proposed between Trent University (BSc Chemistry) and Swansea University, Wales (BEng Chemical Engineering): Calendar copy

Trent/Swansea Dual Degree Trent University, in partnership with Swansea University, United Kingdom, offers a dual degree leading to a Bachelor of Science (General) degree (BSc) and a Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng). The program allows students to complete the requirements for both degrees in a structured four-year program of study. Students spend their first two years of full-time study at Trent in Peterborough, taking 10.0 credits toward their Bachelor of Science (General) program in Chemistry (5.0 credits per academic year). Students then transfer to Swansea University for years three and four to complete their study in the BEng degree program, taking on a full-time course load (120 credits per academic year, which equates to a normal 5.0-credit per year Canadian university course load). Following successful completion of the BEng with the required minimum overall average, students are awarded transfer credits and will be eligible to graduate at the end of the fourth year with both an undergraduate Bachelor of Science (General) degree from Trent University and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Swansea University. As this is a dual degree and not a joint degree, Swansea University reserves all rights to make adjustments to the required courses for the BEng degree at any point in time. The most up-to-date program overview can be found at [Swansea webpage]. Academic Progression Application to the Trent/Swansea Engineering dual degree is through the Ontario University Application Centre (ouac.on.ca). Students must achieve a minimum secondary school average of 80% and Grade 12U English, Chemistry, Physics and Math (either Calculus or Advanced Functions) to be considered for admission to the program. This entry grade is subject to change annually based on the application cohort and the number of

spaces available in the program; however, the minimum average for acceptance to the program will never fall below 80%. To progress successfully to year three of the dual degree at Swansea University, students must complete an Intent to Continue onto Studies form in order to transfer to Swansea for the BEng portion of the dual degree and must have:

• successfully completed years one and two at Trent University with a minimum cumulative average of 77%;

• successfully completed no fewer than 10.0 Trent University credits before enrolling in classes at Swansea (no transfer credits are allowable toward this total);

• declared the program major for the Trent BSc degree; • obtained and provided proof of an approved Tier 4 (General) Study Visa; • are in ‘good academic standing’ at Trent; and, • no known reasons to be denied access to the United Kingdom.

Following successful completion of the BEng degree at Swansea University, student transcripts will be forwarded to the Office of the Registrar at Trent University to ensure standards are met for awarding of transfer credits. At this point the student academic records will be fully reviewed to confirm eligibility for graduation from the dual degree program. Students currently studying at Trent and transfer students from other post-secondary institutions who have been admitted to Trent University may be able to access the Trent/Swansea Engineering dual degree. Contact the Office of the Registrar for further details. The following single-major General program is available for the Trent/Swansea Engineering Dual Degree: Bachelor of Science Program in Chemistry • In addition to the program requirements listed below, students must satisfy the

University degree requirements (see p. 15). • Successful completion of the BEng degree program with a minimum weighted

Undergraduate Academic Policy Committee Report to Senate February 12, 2019

The Undergraduate Academic Policy Committee is recommending the following proposal for Senate approval:

1. From: Office of Articulation & Transfer Pathways / University Registrar Re: Waiver of degree requirement that the last 5 of 7 credits of a Trent degree be completed at Trent University A new dual degree agreement is proposed for approval by Senate (see Undergraduate Studies Committee Report to Senate 2019-02-12). Trent University, in partnership with Swansea University, United Kingdom, will introduce a program leading to a BSc (General) in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng). Students will spend their first two years at Trent, taking 10.0 credits toward their BSc. Students will then transfer to Swansea for years three and four to complete their study in the BEng degree program. Following successful completion of the BEng with the required minimum overall average, students will be awarded transfer credits and will be eligible to graduate at the end of the fourth year with both a BSc from Trent and a BEng from Swansea. All specified required courses of the General degree in Chemistry are met through courses that students take while studying at Trent University. UAPC, in consultation with USC, is recommending that Senate approve a waiver of the following university degree requirement as published in the Academic Calendar for students in the Trent/Swansea Engineering dual degree program:

Trent/Swansea Engineering Dual Degree • Students who complete the Trent/Swansea Engineering dual degree program

are exempt from the requirement that 5.0 of the last 7.0 credits obtained by a candidate for a Trent University degree must be completed at Trent.

Accordingly, the University Registrar proposes to amend the university degree requirement as published in the Academic Calendar:

University Degree Requirements • 5.0 of the last 7.0 credits obtained by a candidate for a Trent University

degree must be completed at Trent unless program notes stipulate otherwise.

To: Senate From: Senate Executive Committee Re: Process for Approval of Convocation Lists Date: February 12, 2019 For Approval or Information: Approval required ____________________________________________________________________________

Background:

Until March of 2015 the undergraduate, and graduate, convocation lists were approved by Senate three times per year in September, January and late April or early May. The process was for the lists to be viewed on-screen during a closed session of Senate. It was sometimes the case that the need to approve the lists by a certain date necessitated that Senate or Senate Exec meet for this sole purpose. Many Senators had expressed frustration at the process and, in response, the Nominating and Governance Subcommittee recommended that the process be changed.

In March of 2015 N&G recommended moving to a process whereby Senate would approve the granting of all degrees and Senate-approved diplomas to qualified students for a period of one year. Senate Exec endorsed the recommendation and on March 31, 2015 Senate approved the recommendation for the period March 2015-February 2016. Similar recommendations were approved in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

This process has proven to be effective. As a consequence, Senate Executive recommends that Senate approve the following motions:

Senate approve the granting of graduate and undergraduate degrees and Senate-approved diplomas and certificates at the University’s Convocations held from March 2019 to February 2020 to those students who have fulfilled the program requirements and who have been recommended by the Dean of Graduate Studies or the Registrar and that the lists of students eligible to graduate (indicating medal winners and those eligible for the Dean’s and President’s Honour Rolls) will be forwarded to the Secretary of Senate three times during the year (in May, September and January) and will become part of the Senate record.

Senate authorize the Dean of Graduate Studies to grant graduate degrees outside of the University’s Convocations in special circumstances to those students who have fulfilled the degree requirements.
