Act ACTION RECOMMENDED: Approval BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Commission, under the Postsecondary Authorization Act, has the “power and duty” to act upon applications for authorization of educational programs in the state. Applications have been reviewed and staff has determined that all necessary documentation for the institutions submitting new program applications is in accordance with the Act and postsecondary rules. The Committee on Postsecondary Educational Institutions, which is a review and advisory committee to the Commission, met on July 11, 2013 and affirmed staff recommendations for approval.

License/Certification Required for Employment: Certified Surgical Technologist Licensing Board/Agency: The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Virginia College School of Business and Health – Knoxville will seek accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) that accredits Surgical Technology programs based on recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The Surgical Technology accreditation process cannot begin until the first cohort of students starts. The institution then will submit a detailed self-study, and ARC/STSA will schedule a site visit during the first cohort’s externship quarter. The institution will work with ARC/STSA and CAAHEP to complete the necessary application requirements (including the site visit) prior to the graduation of the first cohort, so that if accreditation is granted, the first cohort will then be able to sit for the Certified Surgical Technology (CST) examination. If accreditation is not granted, the students will be taught out at another institution with a Surgical Technology Program or Virginia College School of Business and Health – Knoxville will refund any monies paid by the students. 2.
