Literary Movements• Essential Question: What are the key
critical lenses and historical movements?
• What do we need to know about the key historical periods in American Literature? • Literary movements occur in historical periods• Key political and social events can affect attitudes
of writers• Subject matter, style, form, and attitude combine
to create a literary movement• Not all writers fit neatly into specific categories• On pages 4-5 of your textbook, you can see the
various periods.
Critical Viewpoints• What are the critical viewpoints?
• When we analyze literature, we can look at it through different viewpoints or lenses
• Which lens you use can affect your perception. You notice different details.
Literary Lens• What is the Literary Lens?
• Literary lens – focuses on style, plot, setting, character, theme
• Key Questions:• What is unique about the author’s style?• How do the plot, characters, setting help to
communicate the author’s message?• How are language and imagery used to support the
themes?
