IMAGERYWe have talked about diction, tone, and syntax,

but a common technique authors use and is worth analyzing is IMAGERY.

You need to ask yourself:

What type of imagery does the author use and WHY

Also realize, lit. techniques like simile, personification will be a part of that imagery…

IMAGERY TYPESThere are five different types of imagery to look

for…let’s read about it in Perrin on page 712.

1. Visual Imagery—sight (most common).2. Auditory Imagery—sound3. Olfactory Imagery—smell4. Gustatory Imagery—taste5. Tactile Imagery--touch

YOUR IMAGERY PASSAGES

For homework, you picked a passage and wrote about it—take out those responses and a copy of The Book Thief.

Now, reread your passage and response, and add to it at the bottom, on the back, etc.

What imagery types do you see and WHYExample: I see a lot of gustatory imagery because the champagne is a strong tasting experience…also it is such a priceless moment because for most of the book, the Germans are starving and hungry and can’t afford normal food, let alone champagne.

YOUR IMAGERY PASSAGES

Get with a partner and read your passage and discuss your response and new additions on the five imagery types—what are you noticing?

As a group, could 2-3 students share out their passages (just paraphrase it) and responses.

Remember, imagery is huge! And its even more important that you note WHY that imagery is being used…what impact it has on you the reader and the literature overall.

IMAGERY POEM STUDY #!

So let’s look at imagery—and the five types of imagery—with several different poems today and tomorrow.

Poem #1: DickinsonReadAnnotateDiscuss—what type(s) of imagery are we seeing and why?

DICKINSONSo what did you notice about this poem? Especially with imagery?

Hopefully you noticed what I noticed…The auditory imagery, which is not only created by the image of the drum, but the people “treading” back and forth. The dashes! Dickinson loves dashes in general, but they create a unique rhythm in this piece. There is great juxtaposition between the noise of dying and being buried and then silence…which is very true with death. Often there is a lot going on with the funeral, but when the person is buried, people usually move on.

IMAGERY POEM STUDY #2

So let’s look at imagery—and the five types of imagery—with several different poems today and tomorrow.

Poem #2: FrostReadAnnotateDiscuss—what type(s) of imagery are we seeing and why?

DICKINSONSo what did you notice about this poem? Especially with imagery?

Hopefully you noticed what I noticed…This has a lot of visual imagery. It goes from the saw (which is wonderfully personified) to the landscape to the boy. This really feels like a critique of the world by Frost in a sense that you have a young boy doing a man’s work so young, and when he dies…nobody seems to care. It is tragic and wrong. The poem is very block and chunky, and it feels overwhelming, just like the boy’s accident.
