As a performance art, poetry has a lot in common with jazz - both dependent on a combination of subtle elements to deliver the ultimate experience. In this workshop, Nii Ayikwei Parkes explores how these commonalities - variances in tone and volume, the use of silences and repetition - can be leveraged to deliver better poetry in performance.

To open this first edition of the Live in Accra festival, we welcome Nicolas Genest and the Sobedo Project. Sobedo musicians are from the young generation of jazz in Cotonou. Like Nicolas Genest, they are passionate about jazz and have the knowledge of traditional music that allows them to easily navigate between these two worlds. Sobedo will have as guest the talented Ghanaian pianist Victor Dey and a group of children from various schools in Accra including Ecole Jacques Prévert, Anani School and the Wonderful Street Academy .

Sodebo aura comme invité d’honneur le talentueux pianiste ghanéen Victor Drey et un groupe d’enfants de différentes écoles d’Accra dont l’école Jacques Prévert, Anani School et la Wonderful Street Academy

In the country of Mantain, corruption and vice have found solace. There are leaders and Citizens, but you can hardly tell them apart, as a result of the rottenness of their collective behaviours. The gods who are watching are now tired of it. Do they step in, wipe Mantein out, or offer them the opportunity of a fresh start?Script by Golda Addo, adaptation by New Morning

With 60 thousand albums sold and nearly 2,000 different presentations in five continents over a decade, La-33 has become one of the most influential Colombian salsa orches-tras on the international scene.La-33 began in 2001 when bro-thers, Sergio and Santiago Mejia, assembled a group of musicians to form a salsa band. Interestingly, those who answered the call were not salsa performers, their inspi-ration was more of urban rhythms like rock, jazz and reggae. The band is also inspired by the New York 70’s style, which combines the rough and dirty sounds of the city with Caribbean rhythms, thereby retaining a classically trained per-

cussion, while introducing winds such as those of the orchestras from New York, as well as that dry sound of the saxophone. For more than a decade, the band has been experimenting and reinventing their music, and giving the public all their energy. This concert is sponsored by the Colombian Embassy in Ghana and will take place in a magical location, the Round Pavilion at the International Trade Fair Centre.
