toronto’s latest cultural venue, the tiFF bell lightbox (the new home of the toronto international Film Festival), is gearing up for its first major exhibition. assembled by new york’s pres-tigious MoMa, this retrospective explores the artistic evolu-tion of tim burton, director of cutting-edge films like Edward Scissorhands, through over 700 items. drawings from his early days are displayed alongside models, sculptures, marionettes, as well as costumes and accessories from studio vaults and burton’s personal collection. Free family workshops offer fans of all ages the opportunity to project themselves (literally) into the poetic fantasy world of a uniquely inspired artist. the title of a 1976 album, “cabbage-head man” is an odd moniker that stuck to the composer himself, singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. the world of France’s legendary agent provocateur is now the subject of a contemporary dance performance. the show, by choreographer Jean-claude Gallotta, portrays a clash of egos between two superstars of French song: the album in question, written by Gainsbourg, was recorded by an equally venerated crooner, the late alain bashung. the show’s 14 dancers depict a tale of intense passion, infidelity, and homicidal jealousy. MArC-Aurèle ForTiN The experience of colour his landscapes, notable for their sublime colour and depictions of stately trees, continue to fascinate. Marc-aurèle Fortin (1888-1970) was a towering figure in canadian painting. this comprehensive exhibition will display 100 of his works, including paintings, prints, and drawings created during the first half of the 20th century. it will also explore an oft-overlooked facet of Fortin’s career: his success as a chronicler of the country’s urban development, in his work from the 1920s and 1930s, which portrays Montréal’s trans-formation into a modern city.
