BURNS HARGIS, OSU PRESIDENT Today, we are here in a joint effort to talk about sustainability. There is recognition of the need for a more intelligent grid, and today marks a time in our community that we announce a pioneering step toward an innovative approach to sustainability. –OR– There is recognition of the need for a more intelligent grid, and today we are pioneering our way toward an innovative approach to sustainability the Cowboy way. Value has been created between OSU’s National Energy Solutions Institute and Smart Energy Source to form the NESI-SES Association; an organization dedicated to applying energy research solutions into the marketplace. The power of this collaboration has created the opportunity to apply sustainable solutions to larger areas to form smart cities and communities. Stillwater is on the point of pioneering a smart city initiative that can be replicated nationwide through the two SES PREPs we will talk about today. We see the value in pursuing smart communities to enhance sustainability, livability and social equity through technological and design innovation. Making Stillwater a smarter, more dynamic community provides significant efficiencies and sustainability benefits. The new approach we are talking about today radically reframes the traditional energy design challenges into something more robust with possibilities for new products, services and business models. OSU has also advanced its sustainability efforts in alignment with the land-grant mission. Developments in instruction, research, outreach, administrative decision-making, innovative design and operation of facilities have promoted the adoption of sustainability principles and practices at OSU and beyond. In 2015 alone, OSU was ranked by the Environmental Protection Agency as a top Green Power Partner, received a silver rating for sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and is ranked as #1 for the greenest campus in Oklahoma. OSU’s sustainability efforts extend into recycling programs, energy management technologies, sustainability in dining options and education programs, and an entire transportation fleet that runs off natural gas through OSU’s own natural gas fueling station.

DR. DAVID WAITS, OSURF PRESIDENT In our community, we have a unique dynamic in how we approach challenges. When looking at challenges, we come together to create unique and valuable opportunities that serve a greater purpose. The Oklahoma State University Research Foundation is dedicated to the university’s land-grant mission of connecting the university to business and industry. This mission has created a unique ecosystem that allows technology and real, relevant solutions to be transferred into the marketplace. Part of this ecosystem is the NESI-SES Association. Looking at the energy industry on a nationwide scale, it is clear there is a need for an organization like the NESI-SES Association. The association is strives to fill the gap in providing collaborative opportunities for research and industry to streamline the implementation process and to ensure progressive, applicable energy research. The NESI-SES Association took initiative this past year by granting funds to researchers at OSU in an effort to advance energy research. We are working with researchers on implementing a working biomass generator at the OSURF Energy Park, which will be SES’s first integrated resource PREP. Dr. Jamey Jacob, OSU Booker Endowed Professor with the Department of Mechanical and Aero-space Engineering is focusing on research that will provide utilities the capabilities to use small unmanned aircraft systems to do routine substation and line inspections. Dr. Jacob’s research will also encompass data management collection and storage, and intuitive operational interfaces that features intelligent utility tracking using lightweight sensors. The association is also working with a group of researchers on creating an adaptable framework that tackles privacy challenges in smart grid data sharing. With Smart Energy Source being the vehicle that puts real and relevant solutions from NESI into the marketplace, we are excited to announce the OSURF Energy Park. An example of how the research from this park will be applied this site we are at today, which is Innovation Pointe. Here to talk about

Energy Parks (PREPs), which will combine multiple renewable power generation methods to power

business, industry and education.

Through a partnership with Oklahoma State University’s National Energy Solutions Institute

(NESI), and the Oklahoma State University Research Foundation (OSURF), two PREP parks will be

constructed in the Stillwater area, and will serve as a model for future energy parks around the nation. The

OSURF energy park will be located west of Stillwater on Highway 51 near Karsten Creek, and the SES

PREP park will be located south of Stillwater on Boomer Road in the new Innovation Pointe commercial

park.

“It makes perfect sense that OSU’s National Energy Solutions Institute would build a relationship

with Smart Energy Source to form the NESI-SES Association,” said Burns Hargis, President of OSU.

“And it makes sense that together, we would pioneer something as innovative and forward-thinking as a

progressive resource energy park.”

“The OSURF energy park will facilitate future energy needs for Stillwater and surrounding

communities, and will provide a research space and learning laboratory,” said Dr. David Waits, President

of OSURF. “Information that is gained from this park can then be implemented into practice through

smaller PREPs, such as the one being implemented here at Innovation Pointe.”
