Natural Gas Dehydration
All natural gas is water containing. This water causes corrosion, and reduced pipeline efficiency. Hydrates
can also form blocking sections of the pipeline. Contract agreements implemented by gas
transmission companies specify maximum allowable water content. This is usually 5 to 7 pounds of water
per million standard cubic feet of gas.
The glycol regenerative type dehydration system uses Triethylene Glycol (TEG) to remove water form the
natural gas. This system regenerates the TEG as a cost savings means.
-
Why Glycol Dehydration…
• Remove Moisture and Water Vapor
• Prevent Corrosion
• Lower dew point to prevent freeze
up/plugging
• Reduce downtime as a result of above

Product Description:
Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG is Fully Formulated Inhibited Triethylene Glycol (TEG) based fluid for the use in natural gas dehydration systems. Under standard application
conditions, glycols will ultimately degrade forming glycol degradation products such as corrosive glycolic acids, which will limit the products useful life and promote corrosion issues
within application. Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG has been specifically formulated with a unique inhibitor package designed to optimize thermal & oxidative stability by regulating
the formation of degradation by-products in application. Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG will effectively neutralize detrimental corrosive acids, thus extending the fluids useful life in
application at standard system operating conditions. The inhibitor package is also designed to provide excellent corrosion protection to system metals & alloys, while neutralizing
the corrosive tendencies of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), and other acid gases without compromising the water absorbing properties of the inhibited base fluid.
Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG is designed to be compatible with all construction materials commonly used in dehydration equipment, thus capable of providing total system
protection in application.
In gas dehydration units, Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG should be used as a concentrate without the addition of water.
Thermal Charge Inhibited TEG can also be used in water extendable heat transfer fluid for line & batch heaters in natural gas gathering or pipeline transport systems. The water
used should be of good quality free of minerals & contamination.

• Water is almost a perfect fluid…
– Excellent heat transfer
– Excellent health & safety
– Low cost
• BUT water freezes at 0°C/32°F …. Freezing can cause system piping and
component damage (i.e. volume expansion due to ice crystals generates pressure
which ruptures pipes and can destroy equipment)
• How do heat transfer fluids protect the system?
– Heat transfer fluids have a lower freeze point than water
– Heat transfer fluids also raises the boiling temperature which is 100°C/212°F
– The increase in boiling temperature is due to pure glycol having a much
higher boiling point and lower vapor pressure than pure water

THERMAL CHARGE HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDS CROSS REFERENCE SHEET
51
-
• What is the difference between Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol?
• Propylene Glycol has a slightly higher viscosity, a slightly lower heat transfer efficiency, does not perform quite as well in colder temperatures as Ethylene Glycol, however the advantage of Propylene Glycol over Ethylene Glycol is a lower acute oral toxicity.
• What are the desired properties of a heat transfer fluid?
• Low freeze point, high boiling/flash point, high thermal conductivity, high specific heat, low viscosity, low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, high degree of material compatibility, and high level of environmental friendliness.
• What is the difference between regular duty and heavy duty?
• Regular Duty formulated products should be used in applications that operate between -60 degrees F and 250 degrees F. Heavy Duty formulated products should be used in applications where the temperature exceeds 250 degrees F continuously or intermittently for a significant portion of the time.
HEAT TRANSFER FLUID FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
• What are some typical applications of each?
• Regular Duty = Office Buildings, Schools, Universities, Hospitals, Hotels, Apartment Buildings, Resorts, and Residences. Others include process cooling, ice skating rinks, sidewalk de-icing, and food processing and storage facilities.
• Heavy Duty = Large Stationary Engines, Natural Gas Line Heaters, Refinery Heating and Cooling, Chemical Process Plants, Pulp and Paper Process Plants, Steel Mills, High Temperature Plastic Injection Molding Plants, Asphalt Melting Operations, and Solar Heating Systems.
• Do you offer a product suitable for use where incidental contact with food or beverage is possible?
• YES – Thermal Charge PG & (more to come).
• What is the shelf life for HTF products?
• Typically 2 years if stored in a cool, dry, controlled environment out of the elements.
• What is the minimum recommended dilution %?
• OWI recommends a dilution percentage no lower than 30% to prevent bacteria growth.
• If I buy concentrate and dilute myself do you have water specifications I should consider?
• Purified Di-ionized or reverse osmosis water should be used. Ideally water should be used that is free of dissolved minerals which directly contribute to scale formation. Scale reduces the fluid’s ability to transfer heat and can lead to engine cooling system failures. Municipal or well water can contain amounts of dissolved minerals and fine particulate and is not recommended to dilute coolant concentrate for this reason. Di-ionized water has been specifically processed to remove dissolved minerals and particulate making it ideally suited for use in coolants.
THERMAL CHARGE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
• Do you use virgin raw materials or recycled?
• OWI uses only high quality virgin raw materials in our products. A product made from recycled glycol will almost always be lower in price but at what cost. The recycled glycol has already been used once and no matter how well the reclamation process works the fluid may contain impurities that will likely cause system contamination as well as reduced fluid life.
• Do you have concentration recommendations based on freeze protection you can offer?
• Yes – OWI can offer engineering data to assist in recommended concentration levels based on the desired freeze protection. Please contact your OWI sales representative.
• Do you offer environmental services to help haul away used glycol?
• Yes – OWI can assist in disposal of used fluid. Please contact your OWI sales representative.
• How can I tell if the glycol in an existing system is still within specifications?
• By utilizing the Thermal Charge Fluid Analysis Program. Please visit the link for more information.
