intrinsic aging— natural aging*
Our genetics help determine the rate at which we age. though changes begin in our early 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging may not become visible for decades. some of these changes include:
• Thin, transparent skin
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Bone loss that causes bones to shrink away from the skin, resulting in sagging skin
• Loss of underlying fat, resulting in hollowed cheeks and eye sockets
• Dry skin that may itch
• Inability to sweat sufficiently to cool the skin
• Greying hair that turns white
• Unwanted hair
• Hair loss

extrinsic aging— premature aging*
a number of extrinsic factors often act together with the normal aging process to prematurely age skin. some of these changes include:
• sun: the sun is a major culprit of premature aging, resulting in freckles, age spots, spider veins, leathery and rough skin, fine lines and wrinkles and skin cancer.
• improper diet and nutrition
• lack of exercise
• unhealthy lifestyle
• repetitive facial expressions: Over time, repetitive facial expressions can lead to fine lines and wrinkles.
• gravity: The skin’s elasticity declines dramatically in our 50s when the effects of gravity becomes more evident. gravity causes the ears to elongate, the eyelids to fall, the tip of the nose to droop and jowls to form. the upper lip becomes smaller and lower lip larger.
• sleeping positions: wrinkles can also be caused by resting your face on the pillow in the same way for years.
• smoking and alcohol abuse: smoking and excessive alcohol consumption have a direct and cumulative effect on the skin. research shows that an individual who smokes ten or more cigarettes a day for a minimum of 10 years is statistically more likely to develop deeply wrinkled, leathery skin than non-smokers.

Ayurveda, a 5,000 year-old Indian healing tradition, tells us that the spirit of natural elements (infinity, air, fire, water and earth) are to be found in all living things, including you. When these elements are balanced, your skin looks healthy, vital and radiant. When skin concerns surface, it could be a signal that an element needs to be balanced — and Aveda’s here to help.

complexion overview
One of the reasons for applying complexion products is to create a balanced, healthy-looking complexion.
consider the condition of the skin when choosing complexion products. this will help determine the amount of coverage needed. guests with few skin challenges will need less coverage than those with challenges such as excessive discoloration or blemishes.
also consider the skin type (element) when making recommendations. this will help to determine the product finish and texture needed. for example, guests with water nature (oily/acne) may prefer powder complexion products to control oil, while guests with air nature (dry/dehydrated) may prefer dewy, hydrating complexion products to balance dryness.
To ensure even coverage and best results, use a light-up, magnifying mirror when applying complexion products.
lighten up
Skin becomes drier with age. Choose moisturizing foundations and use less powder to balance dryness.

choosing complexion shadesinner light™ concealer• Match concealer to skin tone when worn alone or applied with a
complexion product to balance natural skin tones.
• Choose one shade lighter when worn under a complexion product.
• For extreme under-eye circles, match concealer to skin tone to avoid a “grey effect” that sometimes occurs when the concealer is too light.
inner light™ mineral tinted moisture SPF 15• Select two to three shades that appear close to the natural skin tone.
• Always test complexion shades on the face. Apply a small amount of color on the cheek area or along the jawline with a cotton swab. blend slightly.
• Choose the shade that blends invisibly into the skin.
• If possible, compare the shades in daylight or natural light.
• Mix shades, if necessary, to create the perfect color.
inner light™ mineral dual foundation• Choose a shade that aligns with the guest’s Elemental Nature.SM
• The initial application may appear slightly lighter on oil-rich skin (Water Nature). As the powder absorbs the skin’s natural oils, it will become darker and balance the skin tone.
inner light™ mineral loose and pressed powders• Choose a shade that matches the skin tone.
• It is easy to apply these sheer formulas because they blend invisibly into the skin.

notes Don’t forget the brows! Brow hair tends to grey, thin or lose structure with age. Shaping and defining brows can take years off the face! To avoid a harsh, penciled-in look, use a stiff-bristled brush and soft brow shadow to create an arch that lifts the face.
A BroW-rAising ideA
If foundation seems to settle into fine lines, use a blush or foundation brush to apply it, creating a more sheer texture. Or replace foundation with a tinted moisturizer with an SPF.
HELLO, BRIGHT EYES
To make eyes appear fresh and awake, apply concealer to the inner and outer corners. Don’t set with heavy powder, as it will settle into fine lines.

balancing lipsthin lipsBalancing techniques:• Line slightly outside natural lip lines.
• Lighter colors work better, as dark recedes.
• Add gloss to add fullness.
down-turned cornersBalancing technique:• Apply a small amount of concealer at the outside corners and balance the line at
the corners.
• Apply lip color in the center and blend outward to avoid going down into corners.
Dark, matte lip colors can make the lips appear smaller. Choose lip colors with creamy formulas in soft, satiny shades.

balancing lipswrinkled/feathering lips Balancing technique:• Apply a small amount of powder around the lip line and line/fill in lips.
• Use soft lip color shades for a softer look.
• If you don’t use lip liner, lightly powder the lips with face powder, apply lip color, blot and reapply to avoid feathering.
Wrinkling is a normal part of the aging process. Lip wrinkles—those deep creases around the mouth—can be particularly distressing to see, as the mouth is a focal point of the face. However, a person’s lifestyle choices can influence the likelihood of lip wrinkles. Altering habits, like smoking and sun bathing, can hlep minimize skin damage around the mouth, including lip wrinkles.

notesLipstick colors should be bright enough to liven up the face, but not so bright that they take over the whole look. Too-dark shades can age the face, and too-light shades can wash it out. Choose a fresh color that goes with the skin tone, and add a touch of gloss to the center of the lips to give the appearance of fullness.
