    widow kill three ofcers with her bare hands, children that hacked administratum data-nets and

    scummers who just wouldnt stay dead. Experience lad, you should learn to appreciate it.

    Very rarely does the Inquisition recruit completenovices into its acolyte ranks. More commonly are

    seasoned warriors, experienced adepts, and steel

    conrmed assassins taken as acolytes, their track records

    proving their worth.

    When creating your character for Dark Heresy you may

    choose to start as a novice or a more veteran acolyte.

    This article replaces the Age table from Dark Heresy and

    modies how starting XP is awarded.

    Novices roll their starting age as normal and continue with

    character creation. Veteran characters roll their starting age

    but also increase their age and receive additional starting

    XP as detailed below.

    Each homeworld origin provides a different age range for

    novice characters reecting their standing within society

    and their coming of age.

    As characters spend longer in their career, they gain

    valuable experience and knowledge of their craft. However

    even the most innocuous profession comes with risks in the

    41st millennium. Characters that start the game as veterans

    will undertake several terms of service, each granting

    valuable experience but exposing them to the dangers that

    beset the Imperium of man.

    tErmsOf sErvicE

    Terms of service represent the time a character has

    spent in their career. In effect a term of service representsseveral missions compressed into a single package rather

    than playing through them. You may take as many terms

    of service as you wish, or as the GM allows. Each Term of

    Service conveys the following to the character:

    Increases Age by 1D5 Years

    Adds one months worth of Income to the characters

    Wealth reecting savings kept over the span of time

    Grants the character an additional 400 XP

    Requires 1 roll on the Career Dangers Table

    As you can see, there are downsides to putting a character

    through a Term of Service. With experience comes

    consequences and potential peril. Even in the relativelysafe connes of an administratum building danger lurks

    and death is an ever present companion for Imperial

    Citizens.

    Apply all effects to the character before the gamestarts, including spending XP. This reects the character

    learning his career before he becomes an acolyte of the

    Inquisition.

    Notes:

    All rolls are to a minimum of 1

    Wounds lost come from your starting Wounds total and are permanent

    losses

    Random characteristics are generated by rolling 1D10 and counting

    across. A roll of 10 means you can choose which characteristic is

    affected.

    Lost body parts may be replaced with poor quality bionic equivalents.The cost of these comes out of starting Wealth or you may choose

    to become indebted and pay the equipment off over time. This is an

    automated removal of funds and cannot be avoided. Discuss with the

    GM how much money you wish to pay off per month.

    Most careers in the Imperium are fairly straight forward

    and characters learn their skills on the job. However there

    are some vocations with occult and exotic requirements

    that take up a great deal of time training.

    The arcane methods used in a psykers sanctioning to

    fortify their minds to withstand the corruption of the warp

    or the mechanical secrets of the Adeptus Mechanicus take

    years to successfully train into a prospective agent.

    In this time a character will be too busy mastering their

    potential or control over articial devices to learn any

    mundane skills or abilities. It is enough that a psykers

    brain will not implode as soon as he draws energy from

    the warp.

    As such any character with the Sanctioned Psyker Trait

    increases their starting age before choosing to apply terms

    of service and receives no additional XP for it. This time

    spent is reected by their ability to (almost) safely use

    their psychic powers. Theyve been too busy trying to stop

    daemons eating their brains to learn anything else!

    Tech priests increase their starting age before terms of

    service by 1D10 years reecting the time it takes for their

    mechanicus implants to be tted and their induction into

    the cult mechanicus.

    See Tables 3 & 4 for examples of events that could have

    been the cause of effects rolled on the Career Dangers

    Table. These can act as inspiration for character background

    stories and plot hooks for the game.

    Note: Using these rules can cause problems with random

    character generation. It is suggested that all characters

    in a game using these rules start with maximum wounds

    and Fate Points.

    As acolytes get older their bodies become more frail and

    their minds more cynical. Eventually their bodies begin

    to fail them. The most blessed of acolytes will receive

    rejuvenat treatments to restore their physical prowess and

    allow them to continue in the ght.

    Most however will simply grow old and eventually die in

    service to their Emperor. The following are optional rules

    to represent the ravages of time on an acolytes body.

    Once a character reaches 50 years of age you must test

    to see if their age starts catching up with them. At 50 and

    every 5 years thereafter you must make a Toughness test to

    see if your body starts failing.

    At 50 the test is Easy (+30) and reduces by one level of

    difculty every ve years to a minimum of Very Hard (-30).

    Each failure reduces the characters Strength, Toughness,

    and Agility Characteristics by 1D10. This is permanent andthe only way to avoid it is through rejuevenat treatment.

    Cost: 200,000 Throne Gelt per treatment Very Rare

    Only the most wealthy have access to these treatments

    but regular use can extend lifespans by hundreds of years.

    In order to use a Rejuvenat treatment the character musttake a Toughness test as if aging normally.

    Poor: A successful test reduces the characters physical age by 1D10

    years. This means they will not have to take any more age tests until

    their physical ages reaches an age increment again.

    Average: A successful test reduces the characters physical age by

    1D10 years and another 1D10 years if you score two degrees of success

    or more.

    Good: A successful test reduces the characters physical age by 10

    years and another 10 years for every two degrees of success.

    Best: A successful test reduces the characters physical age by 10 years

    and another 10 years for every degree of success.

    A character may only take a number of Rejuvenat

    treatments up to their Toughness Bonus before the bodyrejects them completely. Note that in some instances a

    character can lose TB values between treatments which

    puts them over their maximum level. This has no effect

    but will prevent any other treatments being used.
