“Support of locally made orgrown products make it a greatplace to test and evaluate yourproduct,” says Elaine Sten-braaten, new venture coach, Al-berta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, Fairview. “It canalso be a great market where youcan benefit from a higher marginthan at traditional retail. You alsocan produce smaller amounts ofproduct than would be required ifyou chose to wholesale productto a grocery chain.

“Some entrepreneurs prefer tostay in the direct market anddon’t move beyond farmers mar-kets. Others use this marketchannel initially and then moveforward with the next stage of de-velopment in their business.”

Stenbraaten says that plan-ning, research and a marketing

strategy are key components indeveloping a new product.

“The first step in product de-velopment is research. Whatneed does this product fill? Whois your customer? Who are yourcompetitors with this product?What market is available for thisproduct?”

As an example, she says,adding another salsa to the al-ready crowded salsa market maynot have much opportunity forsuccess unless it is either sold asleast cost product or offers aunique taste or ingredient com-pared to what else is available.

“It is much easier to be thesecond product in the marketthan the fifth,” says Stenbraaten.“Sometimes a competitor mayhave the market tied up and itmay be difficult to get retailers toeven stock a new product. Shelfspace is purchased in some re-tail areas and can be quite ex-pensive. So having a strategy forwhere to sell the product and

what kind of places to place itcan be keys to success.

“The more you know aboutyour product and the marketyou’ll sell it in the less costly mis-takes you’ll make. It will save youmoney and can save your busi-ness.”

Market testing is one strategythat businesses use when devel-oping new products.

“This is where an Alberta ap-proved farmers’ market can be ahuge help,” she notes “You thinkyou know a considerable amountabout your product. Now verify it.This can be done by market test-ing it. How is this done? Well youcan choose to develop a testamount of product and sell it in asmaller market or region that youintend the product to go. Sales ofthe product and the input fromyour customers will provide infor-mation that you can tweak theproduct if necessary. For in-stance, a dessert manufacturerdiscovered that Canadians prefer

a less sweet dessert than Amer-icans do. Adjusting the product tothe preferences of the customersin the market provide more po-

Creating a safe play area canhelp protect children during thebusy harvest season.

“Farming parents face a realdilemma when it comes to jug-gling family life with the time con-straints of harvest,” says RaelynPeterson, farm safety coordina-tor, Alberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, Grande Prairie.“Children love to be in the centreof the action and as parents itmakes us proud to see our chil-dren interested in farming. How-ever, until we can wave a magicwand and child-proof the farm,it’s just safer to keep the kidsaway from all the action.”

Working with the Alberta FarmSafety Program, Peterson hearsof the ‘close calls’ Alberta pro-ducers have each year, often in-volving children and agriculturalmachinery, grain, dug-outs orlivestock. “My heart breaks eachtime I heard of a serious farm in-jury or fatality, especially when itinvolves a child,” she says. “Thereare lots of options that wouldkeep children safely away froman active farm site – it just takesa little planning and commitment.”

Peterson says there are manyways parents can ensure their

childrens’ safety during harvestseason. She’s heard of a fewfamilies who share childcareamong several farms. One familydrops off their two boys at thelocal sports day camp beforeheading to the field. Another fam-ily has a tradition of sending theirchildren to visit with their grand-parents while the bulk of the har-vesting is done.

Another option is to create asafe play area on the farm. “Whilethe concept of child-proofing afarm is hard to fathom, creating asafe play area is much more fea-sible,” says Petersen.

After exploring the other alter-natives, Peterson decided thatcreating a safe play area seemedthe best option for her. “Mymother and I decided that focus-ing on a play area at the familyfarm was our goal this year. It’sbeen relatively inexpensive and isproviding me with an easy way tokeep my children safe on thefarm site.”

Peterson’s mother took thelead on setting up the play area,stating that it was much easierthan she anticipated. She se-lected an area along the front ofthe house, set up temporary

snow fencing to mark the bound-aries and inflated a bouncy playcastle. Peterson’s mother alsostocked the house with plenty ofage-appropriate activities, mak-ing it easy for her to keep Peter-son’s children busy.

“My kids were so excited tohave their very own place to playoutside that it was hard to getthem to come inside,” says Peter-son.

Another perk Peterson notedwas that the children could stillcatch glimpses of the machineryand trucks coming and going.“You can still have kids aroundthe farm and inspire their agricul-tural side without putting them inharm’s way. At the end of the day,the harvest is in and the kids aresafe. Everyone is happy!”

Peterson feels so passionatelyabout keeping kids safe on thefarm that she is in the midst ofproducing a Creating Safe PlayAreas resource that will soon beavailable to parents.
