Children as well as adults are fascinated by the story of young David with a sling and a stone killing the giant Goliath. We often think only one giant was killed but there were four other giants that were killed by David‘s men as recorded in 2 Sam. 21:16-22:

16And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant [Giant No.1], the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. 17But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. 18And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant [Giant No.2]. 19And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite [Giant No.3], the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number [Giant No.4]; and he also was born to the giant. 21And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. 22These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

A preacher who prayed and prophesied over me said that I was to be a giant slayer. I began to search the scriptures and found what giants I was to kill. I will be sharing five giants to slay in this and future issues.

First, The Giant of Fears. Giant Fear has tormented many (1Jn. 4:18 “…fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love”). We face many kinds of fears: darkness, people, enclosed spaces, heights, insects, death, etc. I found a list of 593 fears or phobias on the Internet (http://phobialist.com/). There are people who exploit our fears by writing horror stories, directing movies and even building houses of horrors.

God knows all our fears. Someone counted 366 promises of “fear not” or its equivalent in the Bible. If it is true, God knows we need assurance every day including an extra one for a leap year. Many of these are found in Isaiah (e.g. Isa 35:4 “Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you”; Isa 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness”). Claim them in times of fears.

The opposite of fear is faith. When you believe something positively, it is faith. But when you believe something negatively, it is fear. What you believe is likely to come to pass whether good or bad. In Job 3:25, Job says: “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” If you keep thinking or focusing on your fears, you will bring them to pass. Replace fear with faith. Instead of believing bad things will happen to you, believe good things will come upon you.

I came across this story of the fear of the unknown bringing death instead of life to people:

Several generations ago, during one of the most turbulent of the desert wars in the Middle East, a spy was captured and sentenced to death by a general of the Persian army. The general, a man of intelligence and compassion, had adopted a strange and unusual custom in such cases. He permitted the condemned person to make a choice. The prisoner could either face a firing squad or pass through the Black Door. As the moment of the execution drew near, the general ordered the spy to be brought before him for a short, final interview, the primary purpose of which was to receive the answer of the doomed man to the query: “What shall it be-the firing squad or the Black Door?”This was not an easy decision, and the prisoner hesitated, but soon made it known that he much preferred the firing squad to the unknown horrors that might await him behind the ominous and mysterious door. Not long thereafter, a volley of shots in the courtyard announced that the grim sentence had been fulfilled. The general, staring at his boots, turned to his aide and said, “You see how it is with men; they will always prefer the known to the unknown. It is characteristic of people to be afraid of the undefined. Yet I gave him his choice.” “What lies beyond the Black Door?” asked the aide. “Freedom,” replied the general, “and I’ve known only a few brave enough to take it.” Slay the giant of fears in your life.

Second, The Giant of Worries. Giant Worry causes many to age rapidly: turning hairs white, adding wrinkles and eye bags to faces. People worry too much. Here are some worries of the Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) as

found in a survey [the Louis Harris Poll, financed by Oath Pharmaceutical Corp., maker of Renova skin cream] of more than twelve hundred 30–50 year-olds. It also found: 66% worry about gaining weight, 28% worry about losing hair, 28% worry about getting facial wrinkles and 24% worry about getting grey hair.

Some worries are unnecessary for they will never come into your life. For example, a person worried he would contract cancer but he died of TB instead. Some worries will come to pass but they will have no significant impact in your lives. Failure in one subject in a diploma course may not be the collapse of your life. I read somewhere that only 8% of our worries are real worries but still there are solutions to alleviate their impact on your life.

In the Sermon of the Mount, Jesus said that the heathen worry about food, drink and clothing [Matt. 6: 31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things]. I came across this interesting poem that describes those who worry:

Said the robin to the sparrow, “I should really like to know Why these anxious human beings Rush about and worry so.” Said the sparrow to the robin, “I think that it must be They have no Heavenly Father Such as cares for you and me.”

How do you slay Giant Worry? First, bring every worry to God in prayer and leave it there. Phil. 4:6 states, “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

I heard of an old uneducated man who was given a lift on a horse and carriage but he was still carrying his sack of things. When the driver asked him why he was still carrying his sack, he replied he did want to burden the horse. Similarly, when you are in Christ, He carries all your burdens. Yet we are anxious because we do not want to bother the Lord. 1 Peter 5:7 says: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” If you feel you have no strength to cast your worries, you can roll them to the Lord.

Second, take one step at a time when you are overwhelmed by your worries. Matthew 6:34 states: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Take one day at a time when you become anxious about your future. If you can plan your future without worrying, then go ahead in your planning for 5 years, 10 years or even a lifetime. But when you let your future burden you, you should take one day at a time. When you have an enormous project or work, don’t be anxious. Break your work into smaller portions and tackle one task at a time. Someone says you can eat a whole elephant by eating one bite at a time. Don’t sit and start worrying about anything, start by doing something small towards your goal.

We have slain the giants of fears and worries in this issue; I will share more giants to slay in the next issue.

Dear Ministers and Churches of the Assemblies of God, I want to take this opportunity to thank many of you for your wonderful support to the Executive Council 2010/2011. It has truly been an eye opener to lead and to see this movement grow from strength to strength. As we enter into a new season, we are believing God for greater things to come. The AG TIMES is one of the first of many new things that we will be seeing. To foster our vision and communication, I would like everyone to participate in the AG TIMES by submitting a story, a testimony, an article of your church life or even an advert of your forecast events that we as a denomination can rally around.

To fan a movement of the Spirit towards Togetherness, I would like to see the AG churches and ministers coming together in greater interaction. Already the prayer meetings are achieving some of this component of us praying together and having times for engagement. At the recent MIR at the

Golden Palm Resort, it was wonderful to see ministers from the different churches engaging in conversation after dinner into the late night hours. What was more pleasing was the momentum of prayer for each other.

I believe that come 2012, we will see greater fellowship and cooperation together. Let us look forward to the Prayer Meetings and the Minister’s Summit that we will be having together. This would be a time of us coming together, praying together and walking the journey of ministry together.

As the Spirit leads us, we want to endeavour to see Training take place across the board for all of our credentialled workers. This year, we saw several such training sessions organized for our ministers, both on formal and non-formal platforms. The Assemblies of God Bible College (AGBC) has received another 5 more years of recognition and affirmation from the Asia Theological Accreditation Board and 10 more years of academic excellence and standing from the Asia Pacific Theological Accreditation Board for our programs. Education must be primary and ongoing as we continue to labour in the current “harvest fields”. As the sociological arena changes, we need to engage both in a theological and relevant manner to reach the unreached and to bring revelatory understanding to our congregation. Hence, I would like to encourage everyone, both full-time ministers and laity, to engage with us in AGBC so that you can be equipped to serve our Master.

On the non-formal platforms, we had both excellent impartation sessions from Rev Dr Naomi Dowdy, Rev Dr David Lim and Rev Simon Chan. Many ministers have feedback their deep appreciation for these times of engagements. On top of these platforms, there were other trainings organized by churches and organizations that were made available for our ministers to attend. Some of these

were sessions were on Handling Media by National Council of Churches, Dr Kevin Mannonia and the Global Leadership Summit to name a few.

In year 2012, we will continue to see more of these trainings both formal and non-formal to engage ministers to better serve our AG constituents. As these developments continue, we will move into the next wave of seeing church trainings that will be developed in consultations with the Senior Pastors.

The third development of the Spirit will be the area of Transformation. Transformation is about bringing the impact and influence of Christ into our world. We would like to see how as a movement of the Spirit, we are able to do this at all spheres. Currently the main draw has to do with missions that each local church of the AG is undertaking. However at the Asia Pacific and International level, the AG Singapore is engaging to bring social transformation through our relief efforts e.g. Japan’s tsunami.

Closer to home is the convening of a group of experienced itinerant ministers/evangelists to be the steering committee to launch an association of evangelists within the AG Singapore umbrella. Through this committee we aim to provide endorsements, care and mentoring amongst these that are called to be God’s messengers. This would also provide a listing of ministers that can bring transformation to churches and community within the Asia Pacific networks. At this moment, the paper submitted by this committee is being studied for implementation. I believe once implemented, this Association of AG Evangelists / Itinerant Ministers can be a transformational force.

In 2012, we believe that God will continue to lead us forward to do greater exploits both in our nation and beyond.

For this year, MIR we had more than 60 Chinese pastors and leaders attending the retreat at Golden Palm Tree Resort, Sepang.

Rev Lawrence Liu from Taipei Revival Church was our speaker. He was a mission pastor at heart, spending much time in Russia, China and other countries, training and developing pastors in their homeland. In this camp, he shared on the life and ministry of the Apostle Paul. There were many good points which were practical and applicable to our ministry and personal growth. The following feedback from the Chinese pastors and leaders show this.

The Graduation ceremony is the climax of the school year. The Assemblies of God Bible College (AGBC) rejoiced with the 35 graduates and their families and churches. Held at Centre of New Life on 13 November 2011, AGBC’s College Management Committee, members of the A/G Executive Council, invited guests, pastors, families, and friends gathered to celebrate with AGBC and the graduates. Altogether, the graduates were conferred certificates to master’s degrees.

The years of formal training have come to an end for the graduates. However they will keep on learning and growing in their area of ministry as a new journey has just begun. May the graduates go forth boldly, knowing they are in the Master’s Hand!

Heah Yong Chian of Royal Rangers Outpost #12 (Eternal Life Assembly), received the National Youth Achievement Award (Gold) from His Excellency, Tony Tan Keng Yam, President of the Republic of Singapore, at the 11th NYAA Gold Award Presentation Ceremony held at ITE College (West) on 28th October 2011. The Gold Award is the pinnacle of the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) programme that provides young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years old with a platform to develop and maximize their potential though participation in five areas– service, adventurous journey, skills, physical recreation or a residential project that benefits the community. The NYAA award programme is a full member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award adopted in over 130 countries worldwide to recognise exceptional youth development. Teen Challenge (Singapore) recently celebrated its 35th anniversary at the Ban Heng Pavilion Restaurant, on the 4th of November 2011 and had the honour of having Mr Hri Kumar Nair, a Member of Parliament for Bishan and Toa Payoh GRC, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law, Member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education GRC to grace this event.

With a crowd of over 570 distinguished guests, families and friends of Teen Challenge (Singapore) gathered together to give thanks to God for His goodness upon the ministry.

Upon commencement of the service, Mr Eddie Joseph, DARE Centre senior manager, together with Mr Jason Lim, one of the Board of Directors of Teen Challenge, led the congregation in a time of praise and worship, while Rev. Sam Kuna, the Vice-President and the former Executive Director of Teen Challenge (Singapore) livened up the night by hosting the 35th Anniversary celebration. Teen Challenge (Singapore) also had the honour of having guest singer, Mr Geoffrey Wu, present two songs to thank God for His provision and guidance upon Teen Challenge throughout the past 35 years. Not forgetting the famous Faith Bandwagon performed with Rev. Sam Kuna as the keyboardist, which had many cheering them on.

Ms Joyce Chan, the Executive Director of Teen Challenge (Singapore) also shared a touching message on the importance of saving the lost from their addictions and other life threatening problems, emphasising on the phrase found in the film “Schindler’s List” “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire”.

Indeed it was a joyous occasion for many old friends, colleagues, ex beneficiaries, volunteers and families as many took the opportunity to catch up with friends and that was what it was all about, coming together as one big family, exhorting and encouraging one another which reflected on the theme “Building for Life”.

Teen Challenge is grateful for all the support rendered from the various churches, friends, and sponsors that have continuously sowed into the ministry all these years. Without these support, Teen Challenge would not have been where it is today, reaching out to the marginalised, and making a difference in our community. Glory to God in the highest!

Royal Rangers Singapore has been accredited as an Operating Authority with the NYAA Council since 2009. To date, it has shaped a total of 19 NYAA Bronze Award recipients and 11 NYAA Silver Award recipients - through its child-led, adult-facilitated Christian mentoring programme. The synergy between NYAA and Royal Rangers provides a unique opportunity for our young people to develop and to reflect on their experiences in a Royal Rangers environment built on friendship, fun, Christian service and hands-on experiential learning. In Yong Chian’s own words, “I was constantly challenged by my leader and mentor, Commander Daniel Yue, to rethink my motivations and purpose for doing the different sections. This challenges me to think about what’s next and how to bring myself to another level”. Such reflections empower the next generation to not only hone their leadership edge; more importantly, it allows Christian leaders to mentor them to remain ready and responsive to serve God’s purpose as their own.

The Royal Rangers NYAA programme is an excellent resource for churches, youth groups and community outreach centres to build up their congregation and reach their communities through an internationally recognised adventure-based mentoring programme.

New Destiny Fellowship International celebrated its 14th Anniversary on the 22nd October 2011 along the theme of ‘AWESOME IS OUR LORD.’ We had the honour of having the General Superintendent, Rev Dominic Yeo, as speaker.

The highlights of the occasion included:

1. Building Your Legacy (Building Fund Faith Promise) The pledge amount exceeded the target set for the period of November 2011 to March 2012.

2. Destiny Centre A video presentation of our dream of ‘Destiny Centre’ - A Family Life Centre offering spiritual, medical, financial, educational and emotional healing to the community. This is an audacious dream. Yet we are reminded that

If the size of our visionisn’t intimidating to us, there is

a good chance that it is insulting to GOD.

Every God-given dream is intimidating to man; but it is also EPIC: Everything Possible In Christ. We praise the LORD for the promise He gives to us from Ephesians 3:20,

Now to Him Who, by the power that is at work within us, is able to do superabundantly,

far over and above all that we [dare] ask orthink[infinitelybeyondourhighestprayers,

desires, thoughts, hopes or dreams]

3. Faithfulness of God God’s faithfulness upon all our congregations – English, Mandarin, Filipino, Indonesian and BM - was depicted via a video with the following story line: a. Passionate Heartbeat for God and His Agenda b. Transforming Families through the Word and the Spirit c. Strategic Leadership empowered by Prayer, Mentoring and Team Ministry

4. Special Items Sister Kesia, our 10-year-old from the Indonesian congregation, presented the song “YOU LIFT ME UP”. Many were touched and inspired by her joy in the LORD despite her physical handicap.

The children from the English congregation interpreted the song ‘MY HOPE IT COMES FROM GOD ALONE’ through sign language.

Our F i l ip ino youth presented a mime - ‘By His Wounds’ .

The Celebration Service climaxed with the unwrapping of the door gift which was given to all. Pastor David Chee used the gift – An Hour Glass – to remind all that “greater things are yet to come.” This is our “kairos” moment to rise up with audacious faith so as to fulfill the purpose of God in and through our lives.” This was followed by a memorial time of food and fellowship.

It was with great joy and wonderment that the Centre of New Life Kindergarten celebrated with the students and parents in the 2nd CNL Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony. The occasion was graced by Dr Amy Khor, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Mayor of the South West district and Member of Parliament for Hong Kah North.

The CNL Kindergarten started out as a vision by Senior Pastor Lawrence Ong. He had an intense desire to start a work to impact children’s lives in the west of Singapore. At that point of time, Centre of New Life Church was in the midst of constructing our church building at Gek Poh, Jurong West.

As the building neared completion, a committee was set up to study the feasibility of starting a kindergarten. Although the committee consisted of members of CNL who had no prior experience in kindergarten operations and child care, it was by God’s grace that a principal with 25 years’ experience who shared the same vision, stepped out in faith to join us in this pioneering work.

At the beginning stage, the kindergarten started operations with less than 10 students and by end of 2010, it grew to 80 students. As of now, our enrolment is 115 students. The start of school year 2012 will see an enrolment of 150 students.

Indeed, the journey to bring the kindergarten to fruition had been a faith walk. We started the journey with limited experience and resources. God had been faithful at every stage of our kindergarten’s progress. He faithfully blessed us in time and season so that we can be a blessing to the children in Hong Kah North.

Through the kindergarten, doors have been opened to further bless the children of Hong Kah North through neighbourhood reading programmes and enrichment courses. It is our deepest desire that the children be brought up to be God-fearing and productive individuals.

By Pastor Francis Chen CENTRE OF NEW LIFE 《胜过生命里的巨人》系列

By Arielle Yang, Emmanuel AssemblySince the age of 5, I could see spirits or ghostly figures

from time to time. As we were not from a Christian family, our family believed that this could happen due to periods of ‘bad luck’ or the opening of a ‘third eye’. My parents started bringing me to various mediums and participated in rituals to improve my luck, to ask for protection as well as for blessings.

When I was about 7 years old, I started having frequent oppressions as I lay down to sleep. Nightmares and insomnia began to haunt me but somehow, throughout my years of growing up, I gradually got ‘used to’ all these disturbances as I had accepted them as periods of “ups and downs” in my “luck cycle”. Meanwhile, I continued to seek and worship various mediums and gods but had never sought Christ for help. I was in fact put off by

By Mrs Doris Teo-Gay, Emmanuel Assembly HEALED OF BREAST CANCERI would like to share a short testimony of God’s Amazing Grace upon my life!

Jeremiah 32:27 “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh”. Is there anything too hard for me?

In early February 2007, I was diagnosed with Stage One breast cancer. The doctor told me that although it was Stage One, the cancerous cells were aggressive. I was classified as high-risk and patients in this category are supposed to have 5 years’ survival rate. I asked God, “Why me? My family has no history of cancer”.

During this period, I went through MRI, Scan and Needle Biopsy. While in pain, negative thoughts ran through my mind. I cried and confessed before the Lord, that I

Christianity at that point in time. Hence, seeking help from church was never an option then.

All these continued in my life and even affected my family members as they too started experiencing weird or spooky sightings at home. When I reached the age of 24 in the year of 2006, the attacks progressed from oppressions, nightmares and insomnia to strangulations. I would simply be laying on my bed, preparing to go to sleep, but an unseen force would tighten my neck till I was breathless. This carried on for 3 months and I was slowly sinking into depression with suicidal thoughts as I literally could not see my attacker every night and would not know if I would be alive the next day. All the amulets, charms, chanting and visitations to apparently powerful spiritual masters did not seem to be working too. I felt worse as they started to have different explanations or hopeless solutions to my issues, citing things like extreme bad luck or curses due to the timing that I was born to a consequence of what I did in my past life.

I then confided in a Christian friend and he suggested me to give Christianity and Jesus a shot. He said, “Just call out to Jesus in your heart when the attacks happen again. You have nothing to lose.” I gave him a skeptical look but went home thinking that he did make sense, that I have absolutely nothing to lose but a chance to resolve this terrifying issue. That night, the strangulation came again and instead of chanting in my heart, I called out to Jesus and immediately, the strangulation left and I felt this overwhelming sense of awe and peace which I had never experienced before. I knew then that Jesus was different from the rest but yet, I still found it hard to accept Him. I then prayed in my room, telling Jesus that I could not yet believe in Him fully but if He was real, He would resolve my issue and reveal Himself to me.

A week later, I went to my friend’s church alone as I was interested to find out more about Christianity. As the worship songs started, I just could not stop tearing and felt this love and knowing that I had denied Christ in my life. As the pastor gave the salvation call, I simply knew it was time for me to be reconciled with Him and to accept Him into my life. I received Jesus that night and immediately after, my problem of strangulations left. In the next 2 months, my 7 years of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and chronic knee injury were amazingly healed by God through 2 simple prayers. Occurrences of oppressions and nightmares still happened once in a blue moon but I was not bothered by them.

However, 3 years after being a believer, the attacks came back full blown for almost every night that lasted about 5 months. I was very disturbed and upset as I thought that these problems had been resolved. Some Christian friends started to tell me about Pastor Mike Connell who would be visiting Emmanuel Assembly of God and that I should attend his service. I then went to Emmanuel AG for the first time and right after Pastor Mike prayed for me, I fell under the power of the Holy Spirit and manifested for 6 hours. I was in shock as I had never heard nor seen anything about deliverance and manifestation then. It simply happened upon myself and I had no idea how to handle nor perceive it then. The spirit that spoke through me said that it had been with me and ‘protecting me’ for

would trust Him for supernatural healing, so that I won’t have to go for a major operation and chemo. I prayed in tongues to guard my heart from worry and fear. I was later told by the oncologist that neither major operation nor chemo was needed; only minor surgery, and one month of radiotherapy. Praise and Thank God! His Grace is bigger than my worries.

April 2011 was my 4th year of God’s mercy upon my life. I went for my mammogram, and was told that I had to stay back to re-take the X-ray as the doctor wanted to re-confirm my result, to see whether the cancerous cells had spread. During those weeks of fear and anxiety, I shared with my cell leader Bro David & Sis Amy together with our cell group. They prayed with me. When Bro David asked me to focus on Jesus only, I felt a warm sensation all over my body. Through the power of praying in tongues and meditating on the Word, I believe that from the moment we confessed healing, God had already begun the healing process. The following week, I went back to the doctor and he said, “Great! Result is clear!” I was so thankful that I said, “Thank you, Jesus” right in front of him! The doctor smiled and said, “Yes!” My healing was already paid for at the cross when Jesus’ hands were pierced for my sake. Jesus is indeed our Healer. Even if we do not experience healing instantaneously, we should continue to trust God for it. Hallelujah, Abba Father is so, so good! He is faithful and never fails!

Truly, You are the Lord who heals! Yesterday, Today, and Forever! And I am so blessed to be in Emmanuel Assembly of God! Thank you Pastors and Cell Leaders, for preaching the awesome Gospel of Christ which has set me free! And I am reminded of His love and grace every day! I pray that my testimony will be a blessing and encouragement to you.

God bless you and your family richly!

I was admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital on 3 July 2006. Later that night, the doctor diagnosed that I was suffering from heart failure due to an unknown virus. As my heartbeat rate was declining (<15%), the doctor suggested that I needed to have two operations.

1st Operation (in the middle of the night) I was very frightened when I went into the Operating Theatre, so frightened that I didn’t know what or how to pray. With fear and worry, my mind was blank. In my heart, I was shouting “Jesus, Jesus.”

Just before the start of the operation (as I was awake throughout the whole process), all of a sudden, there was peace and joy in me. I could feel that Jesus was standing on my left side, watching the whole operation. It was a successful operation! That night, I had a peaceful sleep till the next morning.

2nd Operation (the next morning) Before entering the Operating Theatre, I was fearful again. Two Sunday School songs came into my mind: “Because He lives” and “With Christ in the vessel I can smile at the storm.” After singing them, my heart was filled with peace and joy again. The second operation was a successful one, too.

My condition became worse after the second operation. The doctors told me that they had done their best. They could do nothing more to help me but to transfer me to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). I was in distress.During my transfer and while inside the ambulance, I saw a group of birds flying across the window. Immediately, Matthew 6:26 came to mind. I was more valuable than the birds of the air. I knew that Jesus would come to save me. I began to sing praises and worshipped all the way to SGH.

My condition was stable upon reaching SGH. There was no need to attach more sophisticated equipment on me. The next day, the doctors were amazed as my condition had improved greatly. My heart rate was increasing. Every day, I was recovering gradually.

During the ECG scan, the doctor realized there was a big blood clot in one of my arteries. I could not be discharged until this problem was solved.

As I was praying, the Holy Spirit told me that God would give me a new heart. Indeed, the next day, after the ECG scan, there was no sign of clotting in my arteries. I was discharged a few days later. Over the years, God has healed me. He has shown me that no matter where I go, how big the storms are or how sick I am, He is able to bring me through it.

20 years. I suddenly recalled that when I was 7 years old, I went to this medium who was possessed by this spirit and he gave me things to eat to receive the spirit’s protection and blessings. I had no idea that a seemingly harmless act out of good intentions 20 years ago could still affect myself years later.

Since then, by God’s help and love, I went through about 10 months of deliverance sessions and was set free in 2010. I can also sense the tremendous difference and breakthrough in my inner being and in my life after my challenging times of deliverance. Shortly after, I started receiving promptings from the Lord to go to Los Angeles Dream Center for mission trips. In the end I went and had the privilege to pray for people and witnessed His mighty hand through miracle healings, deliverances and divine appointments. I saw the lame walk, the hurt smile and many answered prayers for the homeless. The Lord, our Jehovah Jireh, also provided the finances before and after my trips. Indeed, He is the one who enables us to fulfill His plans for our lives.

Today, my whole family has accepted Jesus and is sensing His tangible acts of love, healing and transformation in our lives. On hindsight, I realize I had come full circle with Christ as an American missionary actually brought me to his Sunday School in Singapore for about a year when I was only 3 years old. I thank God that He has never forsaken me despite my rejections of Him thereafter. I also thank God for sending people who truly cared for me and helped me all the way to complete freedom. Thank you, Jesus, the one and only.

Psalm 36:9 - For with You is the fountain of life; in Your Light we see Light.

However, during an interview with the prospective company, Janet was tongue-tied and after struggling through an awkward five minutes, turned down the job and left, red-faced.

Following this, she decided to go for the interview with Trinity, but not without much trepidation. To her surprise, she got to Paya Lebar without a hitch in spite of her bad sense of direction and had a smooth-sailing interview.

A few days later, the church called to offer her the job and she accepted. “Even though I live in Jurong West, the travel distance doesn’t bother me. To this day, I still don’t know where this conviction to work in church came from,” shared Janet.

A dream revisitedHaving settled into her new workplace, Janet discovered that part of her job involved sorting through the accounts of returning Mission Impact Teams (MITs). While processing these claims, the various treasurers from each team would share with her how God worked through them to bless the communities and the way the MIT members’ lives were transformed.

The amazing thing was that all the testimonies she heard were from first-timers and how they all tried to avoid going to India initially.

Why? It was because one day in 2006, Janet had asked God where to go for missions “out of curiosity”. That same month, she had a dream: that she was in a country with a hot climate and the local people had dark skin. When she woke, she knew the place was India but refused to recognize the authenticity of God’s calling.

“I rejected it immediately then as I knew I could not stand the scorching weather, harsh environment and spicy food. Not India, Lord!” Janet exclaimed.

That wasn’t all. On the weekend after her dream, the sermon again mentioned India, but she continued to ignore the prompting within. “I dared not pray about MIT anymore,” she said. But the reminders from the various testimonies she heard stirred something within her. In the end, Janet made a commitment to “go wherever God wants me to go”.

Four months later, the administrative staff in the church office received an email from HR on the MIT they were allocated to. This was part of the church’s staff development initiative. Some were assigned trips to Cambodia and Indonesia, others to the Philippines and Taiwan. Janet? India, of course.

She knew then, without a doubt, that it was a divine assignment and promptly signed up for the trip.

Ahead, roadblocksHer resolve to go would not go untested though.

One week before MIT training, both her TV sets broke down and she knew to replace them meant eating into her income, which she was very protective over. “In the past, my first instinct would be to withdraw from the trip but, this time, my mind was made up,” she said.

The challenges didn’t abate. Janet’s husband, Dickson, was having a hard time then seeking approval for his project, failing which would mean a huge blow to the family’s income. When he asked if she would still go even if their finances took a hit, she answered with a determined “yes”.

Beyond finances, the health of Janet and her family was also tested. Before one MIT training, she came down with a high fever so bad she couldn’t get out of bed. The next morning, her eldest daughter Pei Xuan suddenly complained of a quickened heartbeat and had difficulty breathing; she was later hospitalized. Janet texted the MIT leader and mobilized her carecell to pray.

Despite the challenges, Janet made the India trip where more miracles awaited.

God at workDuring the first couple of days in India, Janet avoided any and every opportunity to pray.

On the third day, at Camp 2 -- the dirtiest of three medical camps where the team dispensed advice and medicine -- the villagers turned out in full force seeking medical attention and prayer. It was then that Janet met a 20-year-old man whose legs were very thin and could not walk.

With nowhere to run, she had no choice but to pray for him.

Janet recounted: “As I prayed, I felt something shift inside me. I felt authority come into me. I started praying louder and louder.”

By then, a crowd had gathered around them, intrigued by what was happening. When she finished praying, she told the young man, “Get up and walk!” It took her and her teammates by surprise. “The usual me would have said something like ‘can you stand up please?’” she explained.

Obeying, the young man tried to get to his feet with help from his father, but Janet quickly chastised both of them saying, “Do not touch!” Her tone of authority transcended any language barrier. To their amazement, the man managed to stand up and walked towards her “like a baby taking his first steps”.

Janet then pointed to an entrance 10 meters away and said, “Walk there.” Eyeing the crowd, she added, “Make sure nobody helps him.”

“It was really beyond me. ‘Normal’ Janet would have said ‘Are you okay? You can or not?’ ” Yet, all I said to the man was, “If you believe in Him and pray, you will definitely walk.” Tears of joy flowed down the man’s face the whole time.

Janet cried then. “I felt so different. I thought, “Why did God use me? I can’t even pray’.”

That changed, though. Immediately after, Janet said her fears and feelings of inadequacy about praying disappeared.

“God is the power behind our prayers and I need not fear [that He will not listen to them],” she said. “My mind-sets about prayer have changed completely. It’s a major breakthrough...now, I love praying for people!”

Heart of obedienceJanet’s priorities have also shifted. “Previously, finances took precedence. Now, God is first.”

Bee Leng can attest to this change in her attitude: “Janet is on fire for God and committed to carecell. She knocks off punctually from work every Friday so that she can make it on time. When there is no one to look after her children, she will bring them all to carecell. Nothing will stop her now.”

For those who are going through similar struggles she went through, she opined, “When God calls you, obey. Breakthrough happens through obedience.”

In parting, Janet added: “I’m very thankful God did not say, ‘This girl, really “buay tahan”(colloquial for being incorrigible), I want to give up on her.’ I’m so glad He saw the potential in me and gave me this tremendous breakthrough.”

Attain spiritual vitality! What better way to reinvigorate your spiritual life than to serve? Here are three ways to consider:

1. In carecell: feel the pulse of this church as you play an active role

2. In ministry expressions: be a Celebration Host, Traffic Marshall, Pastoral Support Volunteer, or avail yourself to the Children’s Ministry or Creative Ministry

3. In MIT: sign up and witness for yourself the miracles of God!

Proverbs 11:25 says, He who refreshed others will himself be refreshed. Nothing flexes your spiritual muscles more when you serve!

“Get Up and Walk!”In a season of God-orchestrated events culminating in a prayer that caused a man to walk again, 39-year-old Janet Lee is transformed from one who strolls to one who sprints in the spirit. By Tan Rou’en of Trinity Christian Centre

It used to be all about money, work, and family in that order, for finance executive Janet Lee.

Saddled with financial commitments, which included having to send her father-in-law for frequent kidney dialysis and meeting the needs of her three young children, she tried to bring in the money by putting in “very, very long hours in the office”.

Needless to say, attending carecell meetings was not her main priority. In fact, a ‘regular’ attendance to her meant being there twice a month but there were also periods of time when she would be absent for months on end.

Janet would also shy away from all ministry responsibilities, particularly those that involved praying. So averse was she to prayer that once, when her Spiritual Parent, Bee Leng, invited her to Trinity’s prayer meeting, her immediate response was, “Not free. Bye bye.”

In carecell, Janet also built up a reputation for ‘siam-ing’ (Singlish for ‘avoiding’) prayer. “When it was my turn to pray, I would keep silent. I was well-known for ‘siam-ing’ prayers. I didn’t want to pray so much that I ‘siamed’ to the children’s carecell,” she recounted.

It was an avoidance that was tiring at best, and crippling at worst: avoiding praying reinforced her inability to pray.

Those days are finally behind her, though, thanks to a series of what can only be described as God-orchestrated events and experiences that have unshackled Janet to become a passionate follower of Christ.

Fresh startPreviously working at an info communications firm, Janet had to give up her position and took eight months off work to tend to her family.

When the time came for her to look for her next job, a former colleague whom she had lost touch with called her up out of the blue and asked if she would like to work in Trinity Christian Centre. It was an option she had never contemplated.

That wasn’t her only option though, as another company was offering her a position that promised higher prospects, better benefits and even an accounting course that would be sponsored if she took it up. It seemed an irresistible offer to her at the time.

Meetings In Uganda (July 2011)It always feels good to see a familiar face in an unfamiliar place. This was my second trip to Uganda after nearly ten years. As I walked out of the arrival hall at Entebbe Airport and looked around, there on the right among the waiting crowd was Pastor Jeff. He would be putting me up at his home for the night.

After breakfast, Pastor Jeff drove me to another town where Pastor Alice was waiting to bring me to Soroti town. This would be my base for 2 weeks as we held Evangelistic, Revival and Leaders’ meetings in the towns and villages of Amuria, Katawi, Soroti, and Kyere, after which I would be based in Lira for about a week of meetings. Except for the Soroti crusade site, travelling to the other crusade grounds took an average of 3 hours each way, due to the muddy roads and giant-sized potholes. It was a miracle the old vehicle we were travelling in did not break down at all, but it did require major repairs after the crusades as the undercarriage was badly damaged.

It was reassuring, knowing that the hand of the Lord was over us and over the meetings, protecting us and controlling the weather to our advantage. The locals had been praying for rain which had already fallen in certain areas. In one of our evening meetings at Katawi, the rains came just minutes after the salvation prayer. In Soroti, God held back the rain for 5 nights until 5 minutes after the last crusade ended. It rained heavily the whole of that night, but we were rejoicing in the Lord.

We give glory to the Lord of the harvest for the many who accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and for revival in the churches in Soroti and Lira where revival meetings were also held.

Meetings In India (September 2011) I have been through Indira Gandhi International Airport several times before, but this was the first time I was arriving at the new airport terminal which opened less than a year ago in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. As I walked out of the jet-bridge, I was greeted by an impressive arrival hall, rivaling those of any international airport. Clearance through immigration was much less arduous. Just as impressive was the train from the airport to the heart of New Delhi. The city itself has not changed though. Traffic was just as excitingly chaotic as I remembered it.

\

The train ride from New Delhi to Abohar, where our first meeting would be held, would take about 7 to 8 hours, provided there was no delay. Our train, however, was delayed for more than an hour. This train was nothing close to the new trains from the airport; it was more like those in “Slumdog Millionaire.” Barely an hour into the 8-hour ride, the air-conditioner compressor in the AC Class malfunctioned. It was humid and stuffy for the next 2 hours until the system was repaired at a midway station. We reached Abohar 3 hours behind schedule and were greeted by light showers. Apparently it had rained heavily earlier on and some roads were still flooded. However, we managed to drive through the flooded roads to the hotel, in time for some much needed sleep before the Evangelistic Crusades and Revival Meetings in Abohar and Rajasthan over the next few days.

Here again, the Holy Spirit moved in power, drawing the lost to Jesus Christ, and setting the oppressed free with mighty deliverance power. Here also, God held back the rain. It was sunny and dry during the duration of the meetings. We knew there were floods in other nearby areas as we saw scores of farmers, with their families and belongings piled high on camel carts, fleeing the floods in Rajasthan.

hhh CONCLUSION gggIn recent years, many areas of the world have been inundated by devastating floods. In contrast, however, much of the world is as spiritually dry as the desert. Billions, for whom Christ died, have yet to hear the Gospel. Like the Samaritan woman, they suffer from critical spiritual thirst but are not aware of it.

God’s heart aches for the unsaved billions living in spiritual darkness and bondage, without Christ and without hope. He still cries out to the world as He did centuries ago, “O earth, earth, earth hear the word of the LORD.” (Jeremiah 22:29); but as Paul so eloquently argued, “How shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14). The world desperately needs to hear the Gospel and we have all been commissioned for this task. According to the United Nations, the world population reached a staggering 7 billion on 31st October 2011, taking only 12 years to rise by a billion. The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest and remember also to pray, “Lord, send me.”

Here is the place for readers to respond, interact, contribute and ask questions. To start the ball rolling, here is a question that some wish to know:

Should I confess my sins to God? I have been told that we don’t need to confess our sins since Jesus paid for our sins when He died on the cross of Calvary.

Some years back, I read an article against the practice of confessing sins as a Christian because the author claimed there was only one verse in the New Testament that taught on the confession of sins in 1 John 1:9. Even in that one verse, he tried to interpret it for unbelievers by adding his own words:

“1 John 1:9 (However) if we (human creatures) confess our sins (as the publican did ‘God be merciful to me a sinner’) He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL UNRIGHTEOUSENESS. (and we go down to our house justified Luke 18:13, 14...).”

When the Apostle John used “we”, he included himself! He used the present tense so that we know even an apostle needs to confess his sins! Why should we try to manipulate the scripture by assigning this verse to the unbelievers! Was there an attempt to destroy the teaching of confession with this stroke of interpretation!!!

After that, I decided to check for myself with my computer to find “confess” in the KJV Bible. I found “confess” and its variants such as “confessed” and “confession” are recorded 47 times in 44 verses in the whole Bible: 20 times in 20 verses in the Old Testament and 27 times in 24 verses in the New Testament. All these show us that the topic of confession is important to us today.

In the Old Testament, 15 out of the 20 verses refer specifically to the confession of sins and the rest refer to confessing God’s name or certain statements. Below are the 15 verses in the Old Testament:

Confession is one of the components of repentance. When a person repents, he is sorry for his sins and will confess to God. All the verses of repentance can be used for confession of sins as well. Confession of sins is so basic to the spiritual life that we should not ignore it. Even if there is one verse in the Bible, we should confess. In fact, I have not found one verse in the whole Bible that tells us not to confess our sins but there are many verses that tell us to do so both in the Old and New Testament. If the accusation is valid that it is cultic to base the teaching on one verse, it is worse to base the teaching with no verse that clearly forbids it in the Bible! Don’t confuse with the one sacrifice of Christ for our sins. Jesus paid the full price for our sins. We can’t add anything including confession to obtain salvation. But hating sins and repenting when we sin is our part to play as Christians. In the same way, Jesus died for us yet we need to accept Him as our Saviour. We need to apply the blood of Jesus in our hearts when we sin though it was shed long ago.

Finally, my advice is: Don’t rely on the research of others in the topic of confession of sins or any other topic. Search the Bible for ourselves and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us all things. (1 John 2:27 “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”) – Editor.

What was mentioned in the Old Testament is still applicable to us unless there is specific verse in the New Testament that specifically forbids the confession of sins. In the New Testament, I have found five verses on the confession of sins instead of one. Here they are:

Beside these five verses that use the word “confess”, Jesus even highlighted the confession of sins in two of His parables:

(Neh 9:2) And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.(Neh 9:3) And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.(Psa 32:5) I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.(Pro 28:13) He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.(Dan 9:4) And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;(Dan 9:20) And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

(Lev 5:5) And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:(Lev 16:21) And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:(Lev 26:40) If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;(Num 5:7) Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed.(Josh 7:19) And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.(2 Chron 30:22) And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.(Ezr 10:1) Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.(Ezr 10:11) Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.(Neh 1:6) Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.

The prodigal son made the confession of his sins to his father and God, first in his heart (Luke 15: 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee...) and then in actual words before his father in Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. The prodigal would have said: “My father would always forgive me and there is no need to confess, especially he is running to embrace me and restore me to sonship.” He was a son, but when he strayed, he needed to confess his sins. The publican humbled himself and made a confession and he was justified while the Pharisee exalted his good deeds without humbling himself in confession of his sins and he was not forgiven. Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Don’t be like the religious Pharisee who is too proud to confess his sins!

(Matt. 3:6) And were baptized of him [John the Baptist] in Jordan, confessing their sins.(Mark 1:5) And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.(Act 19:18) And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.(Jam 5:16) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. [If you need to confess your faults to men, why is it wrong to confess your sins to God? Even though God has forgiven us, we still need to confess our sins when we hurt others. So why should we stop confessing our sins as though we have stopped sinning!](1John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pay attention to the “we” and the present tense of “confess.” These imply that after we become Christians we need to confess our sins when we sin. As long as we don’t need forgiveness any more, then we don’t need to confess. If not, the faithfulness of God will ensure our forgiveness when we confess our sins.
