AFTERNOON DELIGHT

EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD - DAY

A typical lazy afternoon. One of those perfect fallafternoons when every shredded leaf lying on the groundresembles a pretty flower. A row of identical houses

INT. THE THOMPSON HOUSE - DAY

The Thompsons are getting ready for lunch. Its a beautifulhouse, neat. The walls are adorned with many pictures of thehappy family. DENNIS THOMPSON, 35 is shuffling through somefiles. Tall and broad he cuts a handsome figure in life ashe does in the pictures. A cop by profession he acts likeone.

DENNISAre you ready or should I come overtomorrow love ?

LUCY THOMPSON, 29 comes over carrying a stack of plates anda scowl on her face. She is a pretty woman, tall andstriking though hot under the collar at the moment.

LUCY(arranging plates on the table)Wouldnt it be better if you helpeda bit every once in a while, Dennis

Dennis smiles without looking up.

LUCY(shouting)

Jeffrey ! Lunch is served.

JEFFREY THOMPSON, 8 comes running over to the table.Withshort hair and cheeky features he is the epitome of aprecocious kid. He gently seats himself at the dining tableas Dennis and Lucy join in.

DENNISFood looks delicious dear, what sayJeff ?

JEFFREYDad, why is mom upset ?

He puts his arm around his wife in a show of affection

DENNIS (CONT.)But we love her. Jeffrey, did youknow the tricks I had to come upwit..

The BELL rings. For a second all three sit there looking ateach others faces until Dennis gets up to answer the bell.

He opens the door and finds a man standing there. The manlooks to be in his mid to late twenties and worn out as ifhe has just fought a bull and survived. His clothes are tornin parts but he appears calm.

INT./EXT. HOUSE - DAY

DENNIS(perplexed)

Yes ?

MANHi, I was wondering if you couldprovide me with some food.

DENNISI am sorry, what ?

MAN(getting closer and pulling out ahand gun, whispering)

I am hungry mate...and I am a goodman, trust me. just do as I tellyou to and I promise no harm willcome to you or your family.

Dennis looks at his face, then has a good look at the gunpressed to his chest.

JEFFREYGood.

Jeffrey is nonchalant.The man seats himself at the table.

MANDont you wanna sit down mister?

relax and make yourself at home.

Denis seats himself. Lucy stares at him. He looks back.

MANWell, I guess Ill have to startthe proceedings. Maam, may I havea plate ?

Lucy gets up and gets a plate for him.

JEFFREYMom, Can I have a plate too ?

Lucy stares at her son as if he has committed a cardinalsin.

JEFFREY (CONT. )What ? I just need an extra plateOK, stop being so angry with me allthe time.

MANSweet kid, Hi, my names Reynold.

JEFFREYI am Jeffrey though everyone callsme Jeff. Is that a real gun ?

REYNOLDWhy yes it is Jeff. Ever seen onebefore ?

Reynold serves himself.

REYNOLDWoo, tooomato soup, let me try thesoup first.

Reynold tastes the soup as everyone looks on.

REYNOLDDelicious maam ! Ah, may I knowyour name if you wont mind ?

LUCY(tensed)

REYNOLDLucy, this is some good soup.Did

you know that in England, it is arequisite to add oranges in thetomato soup ?

LUCYNo, no I did not know that.

REYNOLDStupid custom if you ask me.I meanthink of it, why would you add afruit in a soup dish made up offruit ?

JEFFREYTomato is a vegetable.

DENNISDennis, names Dennis and yestomato is a fruit. Tomato is afruit Jeff.

Jeffrey raises his spoon as a sign of surrender or beingsorry. Reynold serves himself some rice and gravy.

REYNOLDSo Lucy, what are your plans forChristmas ?

JEFFREY

We are visiting grandma for theholidays.

REYNOLDFascinating. And what are you gonnado with granny ?

JEFFREYWell, I decorate the tree. Not muchwith granny though, shes like momlazy and uninterested.

Dennis looks sternly at his son.

JEFFREY(looking at his father)

What ?

REYNOLDWell, I loved to decorate my treeas a boy. As a matter of fact, ohthis gravy is delicious Lucy.

LUCYThank y..

REYNOLDI think I always preferred a realtree than an artificial one, whichmakes me sad at the current stateof affairs, what with everyoneopting for the cheaper and moredurable artificial ones.

JEFFREYRight on sir, Ive been telling thisto everyone I know. I always preferthe real tree because they add tothe spirit of Christmas, moreoverthey smell better.

DENNISNo, they dont.

JEFFREYDad, you always go for theartificial ones, what do you care?

DENNISWell...because young man, everytime you use a real tree you aretaking a piece of this planet, everthought of that ?

REYNOLDHey Dennis, I gotta side with thekid on this one OK, I mean its notlike you are going and cuttingendangered species out there.Christmas trees are reared for thispurpose. Furthermore, and I thinkthis should seal the deal, realtrees can be used again and again.

DENNISNo, they cant !

LUCYWell actually they can dear.Remember we always got real treeswhen we were dating ?

DENNISWe were dating and we were stupidkids.

REYNOLDahh...havent been on a date sinceages. What about you little guy,you got a girl.

JEFFREY(shy)

Yeah....But its one way, I mean Iknow I love her for sure, its justthat I am not too certain abouther. Girls can be bitchy.

LUCYSome ice-cream.

DENNIS(sarcastically)

Sure, let me oblige. I am the manof the house at the moment afterall.

Dennis gets up to get the ice cream. Reynold and Jeffreyplayfully high-five each other. Dennis looks at the freezerand freezes.

DENNISStrawberry.

Lucy quickly turns around and sighs.

LUCYI forgot.

DENNISYou forgot ! You always forget.

LUCYLook I am sorry alright Dennis. Imean it wasnt like I did it onpurpose you know.

Dennis slams the ice cream basket on the table.

REYNOLDSay chief, Why so angry ?

JEFFREYDad hates strawberry and Mom hateschocolate.

REYNOLDH mm, thats no reason to fight youknow. Violence begets violence. Ipersonally love strawberry.

Christmas is being diluted as timepasses by, its because we areincreasingly becoming frustrated onthe smallest of issues, right jeff?

JEFFREYI prefer strawberry too and yes,you do have a point.

DENNISI dont do much wrong Reynold, andI am almost always never wrong.

REYNOLDDennis, its that almost which canmake all the difference.Think itover. Anyways thank you so muchfor the meal everyone. Lucy,Jefferey, Dennis, its been apleasure.

Reynold gets up and points the gun at the family, He stridesback.

REYNOLDJust a precaution guys, neednt

worry. Dennis, mark my words man,you will realize.

JEFFREYBye Reynold, nice meetin ya.

REYNOLDBye Jeffrey, have fun in Christmas.Pleasure Lucy.

Reynold turns and gets out the door. Dennis takes his gunout of his pants and runs to the door. Lucy asks Dennis tolet go.

EXT. THE THOMPSONS HOUSE - DAY

Dennis takes aim at Reynold who has his back to Dennis.
