Module V: Climatic Requirements of Some Crops

After successful completion of this Lesson, you will be able to answer:

1. How much of rainfall is required to provide sufficient moisture for good growth and yield of Maize crop?

2. What are the critical stages of growth of Maize crop when rainfall (moisture) is important?

3. What temperature conditions are suitable at different growth stages of Maize crop?





Water relations:

• Requires considerable amount of moisture;

• 50-75 cm of well-distributed rain is conducive to proper growth;

• Expends water economically and relatively drought - resisting crop.





Water relations:

• After germination and up to tasseling stage crop stands less moisture;

• Requires more moisture during reproductive period;

• Requires less moisture when developing towards maturity.





Temperature:

• A warm weather crop;

• Requires a mean temperature around 22oC and night temperature above 15oC;

• Requires considerable warmth from germination to flowering;





Temperature:

• Cultivation not possible when day temperatures are less than 19oC and night temperatures during the first 3 months falls below 21oC;

• Noon temperature above 35oC for several days destroys pollen and yields

are drastically reduced.
