Late Pick-up Fees

Does my child have to attend The Philadelphia School in order to participatein after school programmingStudents from other schools are welcome and encouraged to enroll in any of our after schoolclubs Because of space and staffing constraints however our After School Enrichment Program(ASEP) is unable to accommodate non-TPS students

he hallmark of The Philadelphia Schoolrsquos acclaimed After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) is its

fun-focused theme-based experiential learning-centered curriculum The curriculum is designed

not only to off er children the opportunity to ldquolearn while doingrdquobut also to explore a wide range of

engaging topics many of which are connected to the schoolrsquos annual all-school theme This connection

means that projects are completely new each year thus keeping participants excited and interested

year after year Under the supervision of ASEP Director Diane Pepe the programrsquos visual arts- and

science-based activities are closely linked to TPSrsquos mission to foster critical thinkers creative

problem solvers and lifelong learners This means that ASEP project s reinforce the core principles

that are the foundation of all of the learning that takes place at the school

In addition to theme-based projects ASEP off ers children numerous other opportunities to delve

into activities related to their own personal skills and interests Those activities include cooking

and baking model-making drawing and crafts imaginative play music knitting digital arts

outdoor play puzzles and games reading in the library space and homework in the Junior Unit

study hall This year the ASEP team is thrilled to announce the creation of an all-new ultra-modern

space designed speci1047297cally for the exclusive use of ASEPrsquos 4th- and 5th-grade participants

ASEP is available for students in preschool through 5th grade from dismissal until pick up every

afternoon Come for a visit and observe the magic as it unfolds each day

Visual and Experiential ArtsASEPrsquos arts-oriented activities take place in two areas the Main Art Tablewhere theme-based projects are undertaken and the adjacent Free Art

Table where children can express their individual creativity both with artsupplies and with the much anticipated Mystery Material of the Week

Food Preparation Cooking and Second SnackChildren enjoy two snacks each day in ASEP the pick-me-up snack of juice

and crackers which is served when students arrive and the theme-relatedSecond Snack which students prepare under the direction of ASEPrsquos chefusing a variety of healthy fresh tasty ingredients Second Snack is servedeach day at 430 pm

Construction ZoneStudents enjoy free play in the Construction Zone where they can engagein a variety of choice building activities as well as board games puzzlesand crafts New this year is our Lego corner which features a wall of Legobaseplates and big bins of the worldrsquos most popular construction toy

Yard and GymEach day students can choose to spend time outside playing kick ballfour square or a wide variety of other playground games in TPSrsquos playyard When the weather does not cooperate ASEP students head upstairsto the gym

(MSAS) is designed to off er students a fun secure and predictable haven where they can go to

Study HallMiddle School Study Hall is available to all students free of charge on a drop-in basis Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays from 320 to 410 pm Study Halloff ers students an opportunity to get started on homework and project workwith the support of a supervising teacher It is also a perfect time to meet witha teacher to organize materials plan the weekrsquos and monthrsquos work and gettogether with peers to work on collaborative projects While many students choose to come to study hall to get a jump on assign-ments some students on the recommendation of teachers parents andoradvisors are required to attend as a consequence for missing assignments oras a remedy for incomplete or poorly done work The goal of required studyhall is to help students become independently pro1047297cient and skilled at

After School Music LessonsEach year The Philadelphia School off ers over 6000 music lessons to nearlyone-half of TPSrsquos student body Taught by Philadelphia-area musiciansprivate and group lessons are off ered in cello guitar piano recorder percus-sion violin and voice All students who study music after school regardlessof whether they take music lessons at TPS or elsewhere have the opportunityto perform during one or more of the music recitals held throughout theyear TPS also boasts two renowned string ensembles as well as a numberof vocal ensembles including the sixth grade Treble Choir and Measure forMeasure an a cappella group made up of seventh and eighth graders

TPSrsquos Rookie Chess Club is designed for students who have recently learned therules of chess (eg how to move the pieces the relative value of each pieceand the meaning of check checkmate and stalemate) These Rookie players will

typically be 1st and 2nd graders although some may be a grade older or younger This group will learn about center control development of knights and bishops and king safety We will focuson the diff erence between ldquotradingrdquopieces and ldquohangingrdquopieces Thinking BEFORE touching is our number onepriority We will ask ourselves ldquoWhat is my opponent trying to dordquoand ldquoWhat is going to happen to my piece if I

Under the direction of Lauren Fields who will be a student teacher at TPS this

fall participants in the Creative Drawing Club will learn the essentials of draw-ing and illustration through projects designed to stretch studentsrsquo creativity andimaginations The class will undertake a variety of projects including the creation

of paper pop-up cities featuring miniature bridges skyscrapers and monuments Students also will learn about

Drama Club with Liz Fredette

ldquoThe sky is falling the sky is fallingrdquo Join in the TPS Drama Clubrsquos production ofthe musical The Day The Sky Fell in which Chicken Little and her friends embark

on a madcap adventure to warn the King of impending doom This year Drama Club meetings will be run both as rehearsals (starting with

warm-ups followed by blocking running of scenes vocal work and choreography) AND time for creating propssets and costumes Club members will be expected to memorize their lines and work on their songs and cho-

reography outside of rehearsal time Because The Day The Sky Fell is a less complex show than last yearrsquos Frog amp

Toad club participants will play a greater role in the design of this yearrsquos production The club will culminate in aperformance of the musical on Thursday March 12 2015 Liz Fredette is the Company Manager and one of sev-eral directors and teachers for MacGuffin Theatre Company This will be Lizrsquos sixth year teaching Drama Club afterschool at TPS (Please note Drama Club will begin on October 2 and end on December 11 Participants should plan to

subject of Energy Each week James will introduce a fascinating new topic and in so doing will introduce kidsto the scienti1047297c challenges of the future Fun (and often messy) experiments will strengthen participantsrsquocriticalthinking and problem solving skills which will ultimately be tested when the Future Engineers build their own

means that projects are completely new each year thus keeping participants excited and interested

year after year Under the supervision of ASEP Director Diane Pepe the programrsquos visual arts- and

he hallmark of The Philadelphia Schoolrsquos acclaimed After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) is its

fun-focused theme-based experiential learning-centered curriculum The curriculum is designed

not only to off er children the opportunity to ldquolearn while doingrdquobut also to explore a wide range of

engaging topics many of which are connected to the schoolrsquos annual all-school theme This connection

means that projects are completely new each year thus keeping participants excited and interested

year after year Under the supervision of ASEP Director Diane Pepe the programrsquos visual arts- and

ldquoThe sky is falling the sky is fallingrdquo Join in the TPS Drama Clubrsquos production ofthe musical The Day The Sky Fell in which Chicken Little and her friends embark

on a madcap adventure to warn the King of impending doom This year Drama Club meetings will be run both as rehearsals (starting with

warm-ups followed by blocking running of scenes vocal work and choreography) AND time for creating propssets and costumes Club members will be expected to memorize their lines and work on their songs and cho-

Kids of all abilities will learn faster and most importantly will have loads of fun My-Serve tennis pro Mr Eddie will be back to teach this rewarding club for another

running YGGirls will work on goal setting yoga and developing a healthy body image Each week the afternoon

will 1047297nish with the closing appreciation circle as well as the traditional fortune cookie exchange It is recommendedthat participants have proper running shoes and layers for crisp breezy autumnal weather Assisting Meg again thisterm will be JU teacher Hilary Hamilton along with UPenn undergraduate Allie Cohen both of whom will serve asexcellent role models for this group of dynamic young women

The Mandarin Chinese Program at TPS

The Philadelphia School is the only independent school in the area to off er

Mandarin Chinese instruction after school for students in Kindergarten through8th grade We off er classes at three levels and our bilingual bicultural instruc-tor (Meggie) Yu Zhang is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese who currently ispursuing a masters in education at UPenn She is deeply committed to teaching

and have a well-rounded experience learning about the Chinese language
