Business Case
Make Decisions in Real-time
o Fast and easy creation of ad-hoc views on business
o Access to real time analysis
Accelerate Business Performance
o Increase speed of transactional information flow in areas such as
planning, forecasting, pricing, offers…
Unlock New Insights
o Remove constraints for analyzing large data volumes - trends, data
mining, predictive analytics etc.
o Structured and unstructured data
Increase Business Productivity
o Business designed and owned analytical models
o Business self-service reduce reliance on IT
Improve IT Efficiency
o Manage growing data volume and complexity efficiently
o Lower landscape costs
Business Case – POC’s
Reduce cost of capital (debt
collection)
o Accelerate collection process
can save millions
Mining – Productivity and Mining – Productivity and
Safety
o Workforce clocking
High profile accelerated
reporting
o 1 day BW latency not good
enough
POC 1 – Big data and Real-time Analytics
Real Time Age
Analysis
Real Time Sales
Revenue
Real Time Billing Errors
Log Reporting
Volume pressure on BW
Long extraction times (18 hours)
Billing errors exposed too late
Lack of transparency at all levels of the organisation
Slow collection process
BW
CRM SAP ISUR/3
SAP HANA
POC 2 – BW on HANA and Sidecar
BI clients BEx Query BI clients BEx Query
Migration Prerequisites for Rapid Deployment Solution (RDS):
SAP BW 7.3 SP07 minimum, Unicode
SAP HANA 1.0 SP03 minimum
BW data compression
1,6TB to 350Gbytes
(4,6 times!!!)
SAP BW 7.30 SP07 SAP BW 7.30 SP07
HANARDBMS
Sidecar – Clocking data
Using SAP SLT to perform the replication in real-time
POC 2 – “BW on HANA“ Points to take note of
Always make sure HANA is on the latest revision
Minimum requirement of SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 SPS 05 or higher
ABAP and Java dual-stack systems are not supported with SAP NetWeaver BW
JAVA needs to be separated
Unicode System is required
Migration key needs to be requestedMigration key needs to be requested
o https://service.sap.com/migrationkey
All existing BW Queries, Reports, Transformation logic, and data models continue to work as before
No reload of data required or additional remodeling
No loss of existing BW functionality (Queries, Reports, Security)
Migration of HANA optimized objects via mass conversion

SAP Notes to take note of:
o 184754 - Procedure for the BW database copy
o 325525 - Copying and renaming systems in a BW environment
o 121163 - BDLS: logical source system names
o 1600929 - SAP BW powered by SAP HANA DB: Information
o 1490839 – Hom./Het.System Copy for Systems Based on SAP
NetWeaver 7.3
POC 3 – Complex Modelling
Reporting Challenges
Data Warehousing solution for complex
reporting with 1 day extract latency
PCM Reporting Challenges (performance
and Reporting)….
Lack of Integrated Dashboarding and
mobile solutionsSAP HANA Solution
Real-time Reporting and AnalyticsReal-time Reporting and Analytics
(ECC6 and non-SAP)
Management Dashboards & Analytics
Data acquisition for SAP ECC and non ECC sources
Results
o ~50m ERP records, ~20m PCM records
o Response time ~65 times faster than SQL query (PCM)
o BI Frontends: WEBI, BI Mobile, Dashboards
o On-site project time 3 weeks (!)
o DB Compression – Average 8 time for ECC Tables
HANA POC Findings
HANA 65 times FASTER than MS SQL 2008 with 260
processors
MS SQL PCM report books down to milliseconds
Stimulate interest in BOBJ and mobility solutions
Modeled one of the most complex BW models
successfullysuccessfully
Data Compression Impressive!!!
Lessons Learnt
HANA is buggy and is continuously being
improved
HANA is not just a SALES PITCH, it
actually does crunch BIG DATA
SLT replication does not work optimally SLT replication does not work optimally
with MS SQL
SLT error handling is poor
Joins slow down HANA drastically, used
UNIONS where possible when modeling
Modeling a lot simpler compared to BW
