House Bill Aims to Reform Renewable Fuel Standard

As stated in Haynes’ article from Trade Only Today, a bill that would

help ease ethanol mandates was introduced in the House of Repre-

sentatives on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015. Michael Lewan, grass-

roots and government relations manager for the National Marine

Manufacturers Association, alerted members Tuesday to the bill dur-

ing a webinar designed to brief the boating industry about issues

affecting the boating industry during the 114th Congress. Boating

United, an online grassroots platform that the NMMA started about a

year ago, has launched a grassroots campaign to rally support for the

new bill. “The new bill would recognize the failure of the current Re-

newable Fuel Standard and its out-of-date ethanol-mandate and make

the necessary changes so there is a safe fuel for all gasoline-powered

engines,” Boat US government affairs program manager Nicole Palya

Wood said in a statement. Supporters of the bill say E15, or gasoline

that is 15 percent ethanol, has been proven to damage marine and

other small engines. No marine (continued to page 2)

engines in the country are warranted to

run on any gasoline blend that contains

more than 10 percent ethanol, or E10.

According to AAA, only about 12 million

of the more than 240 million light-duty

vehicles on the roads today are ap-

proved to use E15 gasoline, based on a

survey conducted by AAA of auto manu-

facturers. Any damage from the use of

fuels with blends 15 percent or higher in

cars and trucks will void many manufac-

turers’ warranties.

The Renewable Fuel Standard, which

was amended in 2007, was written with

the assumption that fuel consumption

would increase. However, declining fuel

consumption has made the mandate to

have 36 billion gallons of ethanol in the

fuel supply by 2022 untenable, the

NMMA has said.

A Boating United campaign is urging

boaters to contact members of Congress

to support H.R. 704, bipartisan legisla-

tion that seeks to amend the Renewable

Fuel Standard.

The Next Generation Marine Fuel Makes

its Maiden Voyage

We wanted to share some important news on our formal entry

into the marine fuel markets with Slipstream™ Premium Marine

Fuel at the dock. As a company, we are leveraging our experi-

ence and manufacturing alliances in the gasoline and diesel

markets with the intention of bringing to the marine market

fuels that will provide maximum performance with the eco-

nomics to satisfy marinas and boaters at sea or at the lake. The

new marine fuel is positioned to be the most advanced marine

fuel brand in the market serving both gasoline and diesel en-

gines. Designed for the rigors of fresh and sea watercraft of all

sizes, the marine fuel is commercially blended with fuel perfor-

mance enhancers that help ensure greater efficiency and im-

proved engine performance.

Slipstream™ intends to lead the industry in fuel quality, prom-

ising to boat owners, who pay a high price for gasoline and

Is There A Killer In Your Boat?

The gas in your boat needs special

care to keep your engine running at

peak performance. Preventing fuel

related problems, such as those

caused by ethanol and other noted

fuel contaminants, are more im-

portant than ever.

Ethanol Plus Water Equals Problems Ethanol is hydrophilic — it likes to

absorb water. Water can get into

your tank through leaks in the gas-

kets on the filler cap or from con-

densation inside the tank due to

temperature changes. If water

does get in, the ethanol in the gas-

oline will absorb it. Ethanol can on-

ly absorb so much water. When it

becomes completely saturated,

phase separation occurs, and the

corrosive ethanol-water mixture

sinks to the bottom of the tank. If

the engine is running this mixture

can damage seals, O-rings, injec-

tors, and other delicate engine

parts.

So What Do I Do Now?

Most boaters don’t know that using

a gasoline or diesel fuel specially

formulated for marine engines can

significantly reduce fuel consump-

tion and maintenance costs, extend

marine engine life, and prevent eth-

anol and ultra-low sulfur diesel re-

lated problems. The additives in

automotive-grade gasoline or truck-

grade diesel fuel are typically not

effective enough to keep a marine

engine’s fuel system clean of de-

posits. They also do not contain ad-

ditives that help prevent premature

wear. Slipstream™ Premium Marine

Diesel Additive and Premium Ma-

rine Gas Additive are specially for-

mulated for marine engines to keep

injectors clean and maintain opti-

mum performance. Slipstream™

helps prevent the problems associ-

ated with ethanol blended gasoline,

such as phase separation, moisture

contamination and poor stability.

Our premium marine additive will

ensure the safest, most enjoyable

boating experience imaginable.

5 tips to help prevent water contamination problems

Marine engines require

special precautions to pre-

vent water contamination

from ethanol. Active fuel

management is required

to protect marine engines

from adverse effects of

ethanol and to prevent

water from entering the

fuel system. Below are 5

helpful tips to prevent wa-

ter contamination prob-

lems:

1. Keep your fuel tank as

full as possible with

fresh fuel and out of

direct sunlight.

2. Install additional water

separating fuel filters in

your boat and keep

spare filters on-hand.

3. Stabilize fresh fuel

when storing your boat.

4. Rely upon a proven fuel

distributor recognized

for providing quality

fuels and service.

5. Know the specific fuel

laws for your state as

laws and fuel composi-

tion change often.

How to become a certified

Slipstream™ Marina

The Slipstream™ Certified Marina pro-

gram differentiates your fuel dock from

your competitors. When your custom-

ers pull up to a Certified Slipstream™

Marina fuel dock, they know the fuel is

specially formulated for their boat’s en-

gine and they can expect to be free

from fuel- related challenges. They

don’t need to add any other fuel addi-

tives, spend more money or play chem-

ist. Certified Slipstream™ Marinas are

clean, safe and are environmentally

friendly. To learn how to join the net-

work of Certified Slipstream™ Marinas
