NOTES TO PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Playing Safe gives young children the chance to explore and consolidate their ideas and knowledge about safety issues. The issues raised in the story could stimulate a discussion between you and your children about your own experiencesrelating to safety in the home.

Here are some ideas for using the book with children:■ Talk about the pictures: Page through the book together, and encourage your children to talk about the pictures. Ask

them what they think is happening in each one. Also ask "What would you do if it were you?" and "What wouldhappen if…"

■ Be the different characters: Read the story together. Point to what the characters say as you read the words, and thentake turns to say their parts. Your children will experience that what we say can be written down and read.

■ Choose a scene to draw and write about: Encourage your child to draw one of the scenes from the story. Ask,"What'shappening in your picture?" and offer to write what they say underneath their picture. Encourage them to write as well.

■ Keeping safe: With your child discuss safety rules for the family to follow.
