The parents of Duncan MacKenzie arrived in the ”Unicorn” in 1850 asByrne Settlers at Port Natal (Durban). Duncan was born in 1859 and diedin 1932. George Champion was one of a party dispatched by the American Boardof Commissioners for Foreign Missions (in 1834?) to start a mission near PortNatal, the party arriving in Cape Town on 6th February 1835. They wereinstructed to keep a daily journal for submission to the Board. Delayed by actof war they only arrived in Port Natal on 21st December. Champion’s diarystarts on this date. Dingane was not a trustworthy person and his attitude tothe missionaries changed continually. Champion’s diary is a valuable personalinsight into Dingane’s despotic rule.
