During the Civil WarFreed people in the North:
Free people of color, or gens de couleur libre was a the french term
used to call the African-Americans freed men. Some slaves ran away to theNorth for freedom but they got sent back to the South. Once they get
back, they suffered some vicious punishments.
Some freedmen were lucky and were hired out to loyal Unionist
plantation owners for low wages, and others in the Western theater wereassigned parcels of confiscated lands for subsistence farming. Still others
rendered service to the army.

During the Civil WarSoldiers in the North: When the Civil War began in 1861 there was little or no talk about
freeing the nearly four million African American slaves in the South. The
Northern cause was to preserve the Union and crush the southern
Confederacy. When free Northern blacks showed up at recruiting stations
they were told to go home. It was, they were told, a white mans war.
After the Emancipation ofProclamation, , African American men
eventually made up about 10% of all Union forces in the American Civil
War. Their contribution was crucial to the Norths
About37,000 African American soldiers

During the Civil WarQuotations:
I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcomeme to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.
I grew up like a neglected weed -- ignorant of liberty, having noexperience of it.

During the Civil WarAfter the Civil War:For most blacks, emancipation and the end of the Civil War meant a
renewal of hope: of economic opportunity, social mobility, and political
expectations. The problems face by African Americans after the civil war
were that they had no money and no where to go. The Freedmens Bureauwas set up to help them. They offered a variety of service, Healthcare,
food and schools. Nearly a quarter of a million slaves received education
in 1869. Then The Freedmens Bureau was stopped and the Freedmens
were propertyless. Southerner's didn't want to sell to the Negro's because
the thought that the Negros might fell themselves entitled to fullcitizenship rights.
