MASAI MARA RESERVE ⒷⓁⒹ

Probably the most famous of the reserves, the Masai Mara, in Kenya's south western corner, boasts an astonishing amount of wildlife. Unfenced, the Mara is bounded in the east by the Ngama Hills and in the west by the Oloololo or Siria Eascarpment. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers and where prey is found so are predators. Not only is this a great place in which to find wildlife, but the wide greeny-gold savannahs spotted with thorn trees make it ideal for photography. The Mara, as it is known in Kenya, is ravishingly beautiful and also offers long, undisturbed views and utterly dramatic panoramas. The weather really means something here. The sun may beat down unforgivingly, huge clouds in fabulous shapes may sweep across the widest of skies, the wind ripples the grasses as though they are stroked by a giant hand. The landscape is stunning.

The famously black-maned Mara lions are possibly the stars of the Mara show, but cheetah, elephant, kongoni, topi, Thompson's gazelle, waterbuck, hyena, and primates are all here too. As with the rest of Kenya, the birding is good. There is no settlement within the reserve however, the Mara is in theory owned by the Masai, pastoralists and, in earlier times, renowned lion-killers. Lodges and hotels offer the opportunity to buy their beadwork, checked cloths and copies of their spears. It is said that if lions scent approaching Masai on the breeze they move swiftly in the opposite direction.

Page 7: AFRICA - World Travellers Motueka · AUCKLAND > DUBAI Depart Auckland Airport at 12.50pm on Emirates flight EK451 Arrive Dubai at 12.45am Upon arrival in Dubai, transfer to your accommodation.

The ‘Mara’ is the northerly end of the Great Migration, that great primeval surge of wildebeest, zebra and antelope that sweeps in from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya's Masai Mara as the Tanzanian grass starts to fail. They are tracked by the large predators that pick off the weak, the stragglers and the young. The great herds, nearing their destination by July amass along the Mara River, pushing, shoving and fantastically noisy, just waiting for the first animal to cross so that they can all follow, lemming-like, on the final leg of the journey. However, crocodiles lie in wait, sluggishly cruising the waters, fully prepared for their best meal of the year. Many fail in the life-and-death struggle - drowned, eaten by the crocodiles or, made careless or weak by their stressful swim, brought down by lions. The Masai Mara is terrible yet wonderful, and not to be missed. Situated in the AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Private Concession, which neighbours the Masai Mara, AndBeyond Bateleur Camp offers world-class accommodation in the African bush. Meaning -head of the elephant- in Kiswahili, Kichwa Tembo is located on private land leased from Maasai landlords in the remote western Mara – almost exclusively explored by fly-in guests. In addition to the excellent concentration of animals, Kichwa Tembo lies directly in the path of Africa’s spectacular Great Migration. Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives from camp.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is one of the few places where it is possible to see the ‘Big Five’ during game-drives. (‘Big Five’ refers to lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros. The term was coined by big-game hunters as the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot.) Although it is best known for its annual Great Migration of more than two million wildebeest and thousands of Thomson’s gazelle, zebra and impala, game-viewing remains excellent throughout the year. For the bird enthusiast 500 species have been recorded. It is also well-known for its spectacular black-maned lion and for “up close and personal” cheetah sightings.

MASAI MARA RESERVE > SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK ⒷⓁⒹ

Today you will join a scheduled light aircraft flight from Masai Mara Kichwa Airstrip to Migori. Please note that the luggage allowance is 15kg including hand luggage per person is soft bags only. Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide who will transfer you to the camp about 45 minutes by game drive from the airstrip.

A comfortable drive brings guests into the midst of moving masses of wildebeest and zebra, ready to witness the natural drama as herds brave obstacles and predators to reach rich grasslands. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK ⒷⓁⒹ

The Serengeti National Park, meaning “endless plains” in the Masai language, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas and is an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers. It is Tanzania’s oldest game reserve, renowned for the part it plays in the annual Great Migration. The Serengeti National Park is also home to the Olduvai Gorge, where groundbreaking archaeological discoveries have been made, as well as the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater - a World Heritage Site. The vast, flat central plains are made fertile by the ashes from the volcanoes of the Ngorongoro highlands. This is a place of huge skies, of shimmering heat hazes, yet also of delicate wild flowers blooming after the rains. The savannah, sprinkled with Acacia Tortilis, has majestic termite mounds and rock formations called kopjes which make great vantage points for predators. The lion are abundant, the leopard are plentiful (yet still secretive) and black rhino and cheetah both breed here. There are more than 500 species of bird and, interestingly, 100 sub-species of dung beetle - a sign of a varied animal population. Enjoy twice daily safari adventures with your guide and tracker. Every safari is totally unique and you will be delighted each day with new experiences.

Morning game drives begin as the sun is rising and the nocturnal predators are ending their nightly hunts. The smaller denizens of the bush come to life as the daylight hours make it easier for them to spot any predators still on the prowl. In the late afternoons, sit in the midst of antelope, buffalo and elephant as they make their way down to the river for a refreshing drink.

Here, you’ll often see four of the ‘Big Five’ with ease.

Page 11: AFRICA - World Travellers Motueka · AUCKLAND > DUBAI Depart Auckland Airport at 12.50pm on Emirates flight EK451 Arrive Dubai at 12.45am Upon arrival in Dubai, transfer to your accommodation.

Return to your accommodation after your Ngorongoro Crater game drive. Evening at leisure. Acacia Farm Lodge offers an excellent range of bespoke activities crafted to suit everybody. Farm tour – this will be a wonderful opportunity to sample Tanzania’s rural life by visiting this active farm and get opportunity to understand the farming activity Town tour – this tour will include a visit to the local market and a nearby school Cultural experiences – this will give an opportunity to understand the way of life as experienced by the local tribes for example the Iraqw as well as the neighbouring tribes like the Maasai and the Bushmen. Nature walks, hiking and jogging – this activity could be done in the surrounding forest area as well as in the nearby villages and into the town of Karatu. In the Great Rift Valley, that great schism in the earth's crust lays the wonderful Ngorongoro Crater, one of the wonders of the natural world. It is an extinct volcano that collapsed in on itself around 25 million years ago thus forming a vast super bowl where the largest permanent concentration of African game is on display.

The central bowl, the caldera, has sides roughly 1,950 feet high and a almost flat centre with a diameter of about ten miles. The views from the top of the crater wall are absolutely breathtaking. The crater walls are forested but four wheel drive vehicles will take you down into this primeval paradise of woodland, lake, river, swamp and plain that shelters around 20,000 animals. Many of these are the large grazing animals such as Wildebeest, Buffalo, Gazelle and Zebra that depend on the open grasslands in the crater. These attract the attendant predators, the black-manned lion, the Leopard and Hyena. The Elephant found within the caldera tend to be the lone males who have left the herds in the forested crater rim. When the water stocks are low elsewhere the animals within this micro-world turn to the swamps for fresh water and food. Elephants feed on the giant sedges and hippo wallow in the pools. The Fever Tree forests shelter Monkeys, Bushbuck and Waterbuck and the few black Rhino that have taken refuge here. A soda lake, fed by the Munge River attracts water birds, including Flamingos and is a favourite place for predators to make their kill. Wildly beautiful as it is, it is not surprising that Ngorongoro Crater has been called a Garden of Eden. The conservation area also encompasses several other volcanos’, one of which, Oldonyo Lengai, is still live. You may struggle to the top, if you wish, to gaze into its open and sulphurous maw but many prefer to admire from afar. One of the most fascinating attractions in the area is the Olduvai Gorge, where an old river has

carved away the rock to expose layer upon layer of volcanic soil. This is where Dr Louis and Mary Leakey found the remains of hominids "Nutcracker Man" and "Tool making Man". The "Cradle of Mankind" now has a visitor centre where you may hear a short lecture on the work of the Leakey’s and their successors and a small museum where you may see some of their finds, including a giant Giraffe - it is hard to believe that they were once even taller!
