AFPA news and updates Russell D’Souza Several activities of the Asian Federation of Psychiatric Association (AFPA) have occurred in the recent months. On the 2nd August 2011 the 2nd General assembly of AFPA was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre during the 3rd World Congress of Asian Psychiatry. Forty-four members partici- pated. The constitution was amended to include board members representing the Asian Federation of early career psychiatrists, the Asian Journal of Psychiatry and the coordinating of AFPA Congresses and a council of elders where all board members on completing their terms will be admitted to this council to continue to contribute to AFPA and its directions. Dr. Eka Viora, Director of Health Intelligence Centre, Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia was nominated and accepted by the assembly as the President of AFPA taking over from Dr. Shinfuku the immediate past president. Dr. Gang Wang, the Executive Director of the Depression Centre, Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China was nominated and accepted as the Secretary General. He takes over from Dr. Afzal Javed the immediate past secretary and Dr. E. Mohandas, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Elite Mission Hospital, Trichur, India was nominated and accepted by the assembly the position of Treasurer. Dr. Darya Smirnova representing the Asian Federation of Early Career psychiatrist and Dr. Russell D’Souza representing the Asian Journal of Psychiatry and AFPA Congress liaison were nominated and accepted as board members to the new board position. Professor Masatoshi Takeda of Osaka University was nominated and accepted as the Vice President of East Asia. The new executive, board members and council will continue to work for achieving the objectives that AFPA was set up to achieve. The Asian Federation of Psychiatric Association, and the Asian Journal of psychiatry congratulate and salute Asians who have been recognised as world leaders in psychiatry. Dr. Dilip V. Jeste, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences and Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging; Director, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging and Chief, Geriatric Psychiatry Division, University of California, San Diego has become the first Asian and Indo American psychiatrist to be elected to the President elect position of the American Psychiatric Association. Professor Jeste has made major contribution to neurosciences. His primary areas of research are psychosis and its treatment in late life, and successful cognitive aging including the neuroscientific basis of wisdom. He has also conducted studies of clinical, neuropsychological and neurobiological characteristics of late-onset schizophrenia, aging of early-onset schizophrenia patients, and psychosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He has published 11 books, and over 600 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books. He is in the Institute of Scientific Information list of the ‘‘world’s most cited authors’’—comprising less than 0.5% of all publishing researchers of the last two decades. Professor Jeste is a foundation editorial board member of the Asian Journal of Psychiatry and foundation council member of the Indian Global psychiatric Initiative. His election as the first Asian American President of the American Psychiatric Association is indeed a very proud time for Asian Psychiatry and the Indian Global Psychiatric Initiative. Dr. Dinesh Bhugra, Professor of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London, is the Asian and first Indo-British psychiatrist to be elected President elect of the World Psychiatric Association, the largest medical body Asian Journal of Psychiatry 4 (2011) 310–311 E-mail address: [email protected]. with a membership of 135 member societies from around theworld. Professor Bhugra was the first Asian and Indian to be electedas the President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of UK leadingthe largest college with a membership of over 15,000 psychiatrists.He has contributed significantly to research and knowledge incultural psychiatry, sexual dysfunction and service developmentand has authored or co-authored over 300 scientific papers, 20books and a number of book chapters. Professor Bhugra is one ofthe founding editorial board member of the Asian Journal ofPsychiatry and the foundation scientific co-Chair of the IndianGlobal Psychiatric Initiative. His election to the prestigiousposition of President of the World Psychiatric Association and

his successful completion as the President of the Royal College ofPsychiatrist of UK is a proud and rewarding time for AsianPsychiatry and the Indian Global Psychiatric Initiative.

The Indian Global Psychiatric Initiative together with AFPA’sAsian Federation of Early career psychiatrist are organizing atwo day Fellowship and training program with scholarships for45 Asian early career psychiatrists to participate 15th and 16thJanuary 2012 at the Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences atKochi, India and will be followed by the scientific meeting of theIndian Global Psychiatric Initiative on 17th and 18th January2011 at the same venue.
