Shepparton community supported the Youth Girls Nationals providing a vocal audience of around 2000 to watch the Grand Final. WA will look at the replay of the 2013 Championships and weep. They lead Victoria at the first two breaks and went into the third quarter with a solid 2 – 3 goal breeze at their backs. But instead of going further ahead, they frittered away their shots for goal kicking 4 points to the VIcs 3 straight goals. And that proved the difference between the two teams.

In the first stanza WA dominated the midfield off the back of good work from Sabrina Frederick-Traub and eventual best on ground, Kellie Gibson. Smarting from missing two matches, Gibson threw herself into the contest marking everything that came her way and running hard between 50s to curb numerous Vic forward moves.

The Vic forward line gained the upper hand in the third quarter by opening up their forward space. Rebecca Privitelli slotted four goals for the grand final with some long superbly accurate kicks and reliable marking. She was

well supported by Louise Stephenson and Ellie Blackburn who again proved what a great forward player she is reading the ball off hands and finished superbly finding targets accurately by foot.

Meanwhile Kira Phillips (the Champs leading goal scorer) was being well held and displayed some frustration at this. Phillips broke a Champs record Day 2 for most individual goals scored in a match (8) but couldn’t break away from her opponent in the final game.

WA squandered several shots at goal that either dribbled towards the goal line and were scooped up by the Vic defence, or landed out on the full. Though they had plenty of the play with defender Belinda Smith stoic in defence, and Hayley Miller working tirelessly, they were unable to take advantage of the breeze and overcome a stingy Victorian defence line.

After WA threw everything they could at the Vics, the latter ran out eventual 15 point winners in what was a skilled and entertaining contest.

Female Football continues to flourish with a 29% participation increase in 2013 off the back of strong growth over the last decade. This is the 5th Youth Girls National Championships and it is great to be back in Canberra after the nation’s capital hosted the Women’s Championships back in 2007.

For the first time teams from the Northern Territory and Tasmania will combine for the carnival and be known as the Thunder Devils. This is a reflection of the growth in the local youth girls competitions with this alignment providing a suitable pathway for their most talented players to aspire to. I also warmly welcome the Woomeras to the Championships for the first time with these girls being selected from the inaugural female Kickstart carnival for Aboriginal youth girls in 2013. Similar to their male counterparts, their participation provides the selected girls with an extra challenge with an additional focus on gaining leadership and life skills through the program.

In 2013 almost 167,000 women and girls were involved in our game at all levels. The majority participated in school competitions, providing an opportunity to focus our efforts towards welcoming these players into community clubs in the future. As hosts, AFL Canberra are keen to utilize the Championships to raise awareness of the opportunities for female players and in particular youth girls. As Game Development staff and community volunteers work to establish new competitions across the

WElcOME fROM tHE aflcountry, our hope is that these Championships will inspire the next generation of players to continue to challenge themselves to be the best players they can.

These Championships represent another opportunity for young players to challenge themselves against the best, for coaches to test their skills and for the umpires to experience the highest standard of the female football. I welcome Adam Davis (recently appointed AFL Manager Umpire Development) and his team and acknowledge for the first time that the Umpires Live in Program has been included in the Umpires’ Talent Pathway.

Gungahlin Community Oval is a brand new facility. Not only will these Championships be the first games to be conducted here but team recovery at the adjacent Aquatic complex will also be the first use of that facility. To have access to such high quality facilities will be beneficial for the teams and a unique experience for many of the girls who come from rural Australia.

The games will be live-streamed so that supporters throughout Australia and globally can enjoy the contests. On behalf of the AFL, I wish all teams the best of luck for the Championships and hope you thoroughly enjoy all that our Nation’s capital has to offer.

On behalf of AFL NSW/ACT, I am very pleased to welcome you to the 2014 AFL Youth Girls Championships. Held in the ACT for the first time, we are proud to be able to host the best young footballers from around the country and, in their first year of the competition, the Woomeras – a combined team from the 2013 KickStart Championships.

The Youth Girls Championships have gone from strength to strength in the four years they have been running, and in their fifth year we will be seeing the strongest line up of talented young women yet. It is a credit to Jan Cooper and her team of dedicated and passionate female football managers in each state that we are seeing not only these championships, but all female football, grow and develop to the level of quality we see today.

The women and girls that I have met through my role with AFL NSW/ACT truly embody the best principles and ideals of Australian football – they are passionate, enthusiastic, committed and always striving to achieve more. I think it is significant to note that the players, coaches, umpires and volunteers maintain these qualities without much fanfare, and with exceptional resilience to the rigours of community football.

I would like to particularly recognise these volunteers, many of whom will be here this

5

WElcOME fROM tHE HOst statEweek assisting the teams. Their work, along with the thousands of others in the football community, is the lifeblood of our support. There isn’t a football game in the country that is put on without the efforts of volunteers, and everyone who has contributed their time this week is greatly appreciated.

Thank you also to the parents who have supported their daughters who are here this week. Giving them the opportunity to participate in a team sport environment is invaluable, and they will learn as much this week about teamwork and cooperation as they have in the many preceding it.

The support of the ACT Government for allowing these championships to played at the new Gungahlin Town Centre Facility. To have such a high-quality facility available to these teams will greatly enhance their experience on the national stage. Thank you also to Gungahlin College and the University of Canberra for their support in providing volunteers for the Championships.

I would like to wish all the teams and participants the very best of luck this week, enjoy the experience and play your best. You have the support of many behind you.

Welcome to Canberra for the 2014 AFL Youth Girls National Championships.

The ACT has a long and proud history in Australian Football, having produced a number of the greatest players to have played the game such as Alex Jesaulenko and James Hird. As a city and a community that embraces sport and physical activity, AFL remains one of our most popular sports.

Over the last 15 years it has been women’s football that has truly exploded in the ACT and region as an increasing number of women began to experience the excitement, skills and physical demands of playing AFL. It is pleasing that the great success of senior women’s AFL in the ACT, with 10 teams across two divisions in 2014, is now underpinned by a quality Youth Girls competition to ensure that we have a female participation pathway from NAB AFL Auskick to the senior levels.

As our local Youth Girls competition continues to develop it is a wonderful opportunity for

the ACT to host the 2014 AFL Youth Girls Championships, displaying some great talent and showcasing the sport for young women. We welcome teams, officials and supporters from all over the country for this event, including for the first time an Indigenous team and a combined entry from Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

This year’s Championship includes 16 games over four great days of competition. I am pleased that matches will be played at the new Gungahlin Enclosed Oval. This multi-sport venue developed by the ACT Government provides a great surface for AFL and quality amenities to support players, officials and spectators.

Enjoy the competition and challenges on-field and during your stay and be sure to experience a little of your nation’s capital when away from the field.

The Umpires have the best view in the house of the Championships seeing first hand the effort and emotion that the players put in to each game. In previous Nationals States selected an aspiring female to participate in the Umpires Live in Program and it was these field umpires who formed the basis of the officiating panels.

For the first time, the National Youth Girls Championships has been elevated to the AFL’s National Umpire Pathway. This is acknowledgement of the value placed by the AFL’s Umpiring Department of these championships as a development tool for talented umpires.

“Umpiring is focused on building umpiring numbers nationally to service the growth of the game,” said (AFL Umpire Development Manager) Adam Davis. “ We have an added focus in building diversity in our ranks. Currently the AFL Elite Panel contains two female goal umpires, Chelsea Roffey (2012 AFL Grand Final Umpire) and Canberra’s own Rose O’Dea (Debuted 2014), however women, the Indigenous and people from multi-cultural backgrounds are disappointingly under-represented in umpiring at community and elite levels,” Davis added.

At this year’s championships, three female field umpires including Cecilia Gore-Birch Gault (an Indigenous woman from Kununurra) and Lucinda Lopes (recently promoted VFL

The umpires will receive specialised coaching from the team of Jock Hillgrove (NEAFL Umpires Coach), Eliza Broadbent (AFL Victoria Youth Girls Umpires Assistant Coach) and Adam Davis.

Davis also acknowledges and thanks the participation of AFL Canberra boundary and goal umpires during the championships. He concluded his remarks on the officials by saying, “the umpires are proud to be part of this year’s National Youth Girls Championships and look forward to ensuring all matches are played in a fair manner and are safe for all participants”.

As the female pathway continues to develop across Australia other opportunities arise in the talent area. Kickstart (the female version) was contested for the first time in 2013 in Melbourne. A vibrant nine a side carnival for Aboriginal girls not yet in mainstream State teams proved an exciting addition to the female pathway.

Narelle Long (AFL Indigenous Programs Manager) assisted with that successful event and now finds herself the Team Manager for team Woomeras. “The best forty girls from Kickstart formed the squad for the Woomeras,” Long said. “Several of the original squad joined clubs in their local area and now find themselves in their State team. Whilst this is an objective of the Kickstart program (to get girls playing mainstream competitions) we have had to source other players for the Woomeras.”

Northern Territory and Tasmania are still developing their youth girls competitions so they join forces as the Thunder Devils. “This provides

our girls an incentive to develop their skills whilst we grow a critical mass of participants at home,” said Tasmania’s Talent Manager, Nick Probert. The team will be coached by AFL Academy 14 mentee coach and victorious AFLNT Kickstart coach, Natasha Bennett.

Both teams have been given some dispensation to include 18 year olds in their team to assist with leadership. The crowd should enjoy the ‘run and stun’ style of play that the Woomeras will bring to the Nationals.

NSWACT can’t wait to put on the best show for the Youth Girls Nationals. As the hosts of the Championships for the first time they are also keen to extend this to the way they play their 2014 matches. As the rapid growth of the game continues in the region, so does the depth of talent for representative opportunities.

With former AFL star Setanta O’Hailpin leading the coaching team, the style of play should be vastly different from the NSWACT girls than in previous years. O’Hailpin has built a strong network of assistant coaches with a variety of experience to ensure the talents of the team are maximised.

Getting former Collingwood player and Talent Manager, Craig Starcevich, to coach the Youth Girls means Queensland are getting serious! Breeanna Brock now conducts the female talent programs where she’s had great success attracting resources and a genuine interest about female talent development.

Starcevich is one of those getting excited about female football. “This is my first Girls Youth Championships , therefore it’s difficult to know how we compare to the other states,” he said. “We have however had a very thorough preparation period which began back in December 2013, and a number of trial games against local Queensland women’s teams, Starcevich added. “The girls’ commitment to the high performance program based in Brisbane has been outstanding, with many regularly travelling from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Darling Downs for our sessions. We have a hard working group we believe will represent their state with pride.”

Courtney Cramey is one of the most successful female players to come out of SA. She’s been a regular SA State player, All Australian and was drafted #38 for Western Bulldogs 2013 team. As she heads towards the twilight of her playing days she is now looking to give back to the game by coaching. If she can instil her gritty approach to the game into her SA players then they will be a far more competitive unit in 2014.

Cramey believes that the trials period leading in to the final squad has seen the biggest player interest yet of any Youth Girls campaign. “The record numbers have created an environment of great work ethic and has increased the

professionalism of the group which places us in a good position to perform at our best throughout the Nationals, Cramey said. “With an injection of Youth sourced from the U16 Schoolgirls competition, five country representatives and a mix of local SAWFL players that have representative experience, the girls are well placed to do their state proud.”

Ellie Kellock - someone who embraces the physicality of the game, Ellie is relatively new to AFL however her ability to find the football does not suggest this. She is explosive and has great ability to chase down a player.

Shae Gundlach – an AFL Academy 14 member Shae displays sound skills, She is a very composed footballer who seems to have ample time in tight situations where the pressure is high. The coaching staff from SA likens her game to that of Collingwood Captain, Scott Pendlebury.

A combination of the best of Northern Territory and Tasmania the Thunder Devils allows for the most talented players from these areas to challenge themselves in a safe learning environment. Drawing on girls from both remote communities and metropolitan areas means the players and coaching staff will only meet the day before they play.

Talent Manager for AFL Tasmania Nick Probert said “it will be an interesting exercise getting the girls to bond and work out our structures when we arrive in Canberra.” There will be no shortage of talent and each team is allowed dispensation to play 18 year olds some who have had previous Championship experience, such as Maddison Smith (Tas).

“We are relying on the experienced girls to provide the on field leadership so they can teach the new players what to expect and how to handle the pace of the games,” Probert commented.

With both the Territory and Tassie growing their player numbers through new competitions there should be no shortage of skilled players.

Head Coach, Natsha Bennett declared,” As the first time the NT have entered a squad for these Championships, I am very excited to be involved and to offer the young Territory talent a chance to show the skills they have. Joining with the Tasmanian squad will provide bonding and friendship to create a strong talented team to really have a go and enjoy this opportunity.”

Last year Victoria Country entered the Championships for the first time off the back of massive development in rural Vic. Joining forces with the best from Tasmania, Vic Country were highly competitive and instrumental in drawing supportive crowds to the Shepparton games.

This year they will be without their Tasmanian injection of players (who have joined with NT). Shaun Loughlin again heads the coaching team and believes the girls will be very competitive again.

O’Loughlin said, “the Vic Country girls have prepared enthusiastically for these Championships. We will have about ten girls that played last year in Shepparton and their experience will be invaluable to the rest of the squad.”

He also believes the squad have gelled extremely well and appear to really enjoy each other’s company. “The coaching and support staff have done a tremendous job in bringing the team together and I have no doubt that the Country spirit will again shine through and enable us to be very competitive in all of our games”, he added.

Having won all four Nationals to date last year’s come- from- behind victory over Western Australia was probably their most satisfying. The Vics had to work harder than ever to overcome an enthusiastic challenge from WA and a stiff 3 goal breeze to gain victory. From that successful team they lose some massive experience with the likes of three time All Australian and 2013 champs best player, Ellie Blackburn, moving from the age group.

Head Coach Wayne Siekman doesn’t see this as an issue. “The Vic Metro team will be one of the most even groups of talent we have assembled in recent times,” said Siekman. He believes he has a hard working team adding,” their willingness to listen and learn is something that will carry them well throughout the week. Western Australia looks the team to beat and we can’t wait for game 1 on Sunday 4th May to kick off our 2014 campaign. It is going to be a strong test and we look forward to all the challenges that lie ahead of us.”

WA is regarded as the best threat to quelling Victoria’s dominance in female football. They are regularly runners up at Youth Girls and Women’s Nationals but in 2013 they won the 16s Schoolgirls in a victory that both shocked and dented the Vic pride.

Some of the players in that historic title win have stepped up to challenge for a place in the Youth Girls State team. WA retains many experienced members who have come from the losing 2013 side and it was clear they hurt badly after falling short last year.

2013 Football Woman of the Year and Head Coach, Michelle Cowan says, “we are really looking forward to these championships in Canberra. For me it’s great to have the experience of the 2013 in Shepparton under my belt and we’ve used this to prepare ourselves and make sure WA continue to be really competitive and push for the top spot.

Cowan added, ”we’ve got a great mix of experienced players as well as young girls who are new to the sport and just loving it. They are a passionate group, hungry for success and excited about the challenge that lies ahead.”

The Kickstart carnival the Woomeras were selected from was exhilarating. A combination of raw talent, speed and sublime ball handling excited all who viewed the games. Now the squad comes from all corners of Australia to compete as the Woomeras for the first time.

Experienced coach and former AFL player, Chris Johnson takes charge of the most eclectic group of players drawing girls from remote communities as well as bustling cities.

“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to coach the first Woomeras and look forward to the challenge, “ Johnson said. He added, “I can’t wait to see how the girls will cope within the champs. The girls competed in the first Female Indigenous Kickstart Champs back in September of 2013 where their skill and talent saw them be selected in the first ever National Indigenous female team – the Woomeras. I hope to give the girls more of an insight on game sense and football fundamentals.” Johnson believes a real strength of the Woomeras program is not so much about the on field aspect, but more importantly about the off field. “The program is based on 4 key pillars – Decision Making, Communication, Resilience and Identity. These are the elements we will concentrate on.”

The inaugural event took place in Melbourne running a similar program to that of the male version. A nine a side carnival together with education sessions for the players to better engage Aboriginal girls in AFL, the first carnival was an outstanding success.
