Preservatives in Body Care KRISSY’S INTERVIEW Today we breakdown Kirssy’s interview and further explain some of the harshest chemicals to look out for when it comes to body care. Unfortunately, we’d have to produce a whole other course to cover everything (which we may do one day) but at this stage, let’s keep using our Apps (Chemical Maze and Think Dirty) and avoid what’s suggested below. FRAGRANCE The issue with this ingredient is that we don’t actually know what’s in it. It can be made up of hundreds (yes, hundreds) of toxic nasty chemicals just produce that ‘perfect’ pretty smell. According to research and a Huffington Post report, more than 95% of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances and derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies. Fragrance is also known as parfume, and is found in mostly everything. It will be in creams, scrubs, cosmetics, lipsticks/lip-gloss, in 99.9% of perfumes, cleaning products, air fresheners, car fresheners, scratchy stickers, smelly pens etc. Basically, if it has a smell, it’s probably got synthetic fragrance. It has been linked to headaches (we get an instant headache when we have to sit next to someone on the plane with perfume now), asthma, allergies, skin irritations, hormone distributors and more. PARABENS Parabens are found in many cosmetics products and pharmaceutical products. You may find them in your toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner or creams to name just a few. This word ‘paraben’ may not just say ‘paraben’, it could be mixed into a word like butylparaben, ethyl paraben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben etc. So just play the game eye spy. Parabens have been linked to skin irritations such as dermatitis and are a suspected endocrine disruption. Endocrine disruption is basically the disruption of our normal hormone function. According to Real Simple, in the 1990’s, parabens were deemed xenoestrogens – agents that mimic estrogen in the body. Estrogen disruption has been linked to cancer and reproductive disorders. In 2004 British cancer researcher Philippa Darbre, Ph.D. found parabens present in malignant breast tumors. Health advocates in the US are rallying around to try and have this ingredient removed from the approved list of preservatives added to our body care, however to this date they’ve had no such luck. PHENOXYETHANOL This additive is quite a new preservative to our market and it’s in a lot of ‘natural’ products. Most of the products listed as ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ will have this preservative. Unless you see something advertised as ‘certified organic’ there is no regulation around the words ‘organic’ on labels. So, unless it says ‘certified organic’ be careful. There aren’t a lot of studies on this preservative however research is starting to emerge. The Chemical Maze gives it a red face and suggests that it may cause eye irritation, headaches, tremors and depression. It may have reproductive and developmental toxic item and toxic to the kidneys and liver.

Preservatives in Body Care

KRISSY’S INTERVIEW

Today we breakdown Kirssy’s interview and further explain some of the harshest chemicals to look out for when it comes to body care.

Unfortunately, we’d have to produce a whole other course to cover everything (which we may do one day) but at this stage, let’s keep using our

Apps (Chemical Maze and Think Dirty) and avoid what’s suggested below.

FRAGRANCE

The issue with this ingredient is that we don’t actually know what’s in it. It can be made up of hundreds (yes, hundreds) of toxic nasty chemicals

just produce that ‘perfect’ pretty smell.

According to research and a Huffington Post report, more than 95% of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances and derived from petrochemicals.

These chemicals include benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth

defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies.

Fragrance is also known as parfume, and is found in mostly everything. It will be in creams, scrubs, cosmetics, lipsticks/lip-gloss, in 99.9% of

perfumes, cleaning products, air fresheners, car fresheners, scratchy stickers, smelly pens etc. Basically, if it has a smell, it’s probably got

synthetic fragrance.

It has been linked to headaches (we get an instant headache when we have to sit next to someone on the plane with perfume now), asthma,

allergies, skin irritations, hormone distributors and more.

PARABENS

Parabens are found in many cosmetics products and pharmaceutical products. You may find them in your toothpaste, deodorant,

shampoo/conditioner or creams to name just a few. This word ‘paraben’ may not just say ‘paraben’, it could be mixed into a word like butylparaben,

ethyl paraben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben etc.

Health advocates in the US are rallying around to try and have this ingredient removed from the approved list of preservatives added to our body

care, however to this date they’ve had no such luck.

PHENOXYETHANOL

This additive is quite a new preservative to our market and it’s in a lot of ‘natural’ products. Most of the products listed as ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ will

have this preservative. Unless you see something advertised as ‘certified organic’ there is no regulation around the words ‘organic’ on labels. So,

unless it says ‘certified organic’ be careful.

There aren’t a lot of studies on this preservative however research is starting to emerge. The Chemical Maze gives it a red face and suggests that it

may cause eye irritation, headaches, tremors and depression. It may have reproductive and developmental toxic item and toxic to the kidneys and

liver.

According to Journal of Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology, phenoxyethanol affected brain and nervous system in animals at moderate doses. In

1990 Journal of America College of Toxicology reported that phenoxyethanol also acts as an endocrine disruptor ant also caused damage to

bladder and acute pulmonary edema in animals. In the early 1980s studies also suggest that phenoxyethanol can cause DNA mutations – again

only in animals.

The fact is they’re still testing us humans and we’ll let you know the result in about 50 years’ time…. Scary stuff!

TRICLOSAN

This ingredient according to Krissy was first registered as a pesticide in 1961. It may be found in toothpaste, hand wash, anti-bacterial hand wash,

deodorant, facial cleaners, dishwashing liquid, pet shampoos etc.

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE | SLS, SLES

This ingredient creates the ‘bubbles’ you may find in bubble path or dishwashing liquid. Companies are slowly making products without this

ingredient and you’ll see them advertising that they’re SLS FREE or SLES FREE in order to promote their product.

According to the Chemical Maze it’s linked to skin irritations, acne, dry skin and possible lung irritation.

THE GOOD NEWS

It’s super easy to not expose yourself to these chemicals! Just switch it up, everything we stock is safe in our store and lots of other stores are also

selling artificial free products.
