AL$ Efforts and Outcomes @Cal Poly Pomona

Presented by: Emma C. Gibson

Dept. Chair/Head of Public Services

AL$ Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Our beginnings…Where we are now…Plans for the future…

AL$ Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Our beginnings - How we got started– Better understanding of AL$ and the HEOA

– Recruit folks for the working committee

– Identify the goals/charge of the group

– Obtain buy-in from campus constituencies

– Get our website up and running

– Get faculty to participate

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Our beginnings… continued– Shared information about ALI with faculty and

showcased various ways they can participate– Contacted faculty who were already utilizing the ALI

principles (providing high quality, affordable course materials to students) and inviting them to join our “featured faculty”

– Helped faculty to locate high quality, affordable course materials for upcoming courses

– Contacted Deans and Department Chairs with praise for their faculty participation

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Where we are now – What we’ve accomplished– Website went live as planned on September 13, 2011– Over 65 faculty participating in our “featured faculty” program

where their efforts are showcased– A couple of faculty has contacted us to ask if they can

become a “featured faculty”– Congratulations emails sent to deans and department chairs

regarding their faculty participation in ALI

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Where we are now… continued– Reorganized faculty and students pages on ALI website

– Request librarians to remind their faculty of ALI services/program

– Organized reception for ALI “featured faculty”

– Recognized participating faculty with a slideshow and certificates of appreciation

Faculty Comments

Dr. Bonny Burns-Whitmore is assisting her students in the struggle to find affordable texts. How? By using an ebook for her graduate class and taking advantage of Blackboard to post lab manuals for her undergraduate classes.

Not only is Dr. Burns-Whitmore helping her students save money on the cost of textbooks, but her approach is also increasing their success in learning.

Human Nutrition & Food Science

Faculty Comments

Dr. Renford Reese states, “This is exactly what I do for my students, provide them with “Affordable Learning Solutions”. I do this primarily through giving them access to ebooks, creating class packs, and guiding them to external internet links.

I also provide an array of alternative learning materials on my website…My aim is to give students access to a wealth of free academic content. In this day of shrinking budgets and increased tuition, students desperately need “Affordable Learning Solutions.”

Political Science

Faculty Comments

Dr. Richard Hyslop looks for ways to help his students deal with the high cost of textbooks.

He uses an ebook that is completely free and is provided by FEMA. Dr. Hyslop explains how his “students will not have to pay a cent for texts next quarter.”

Geography &

Anthropology

Faculty Comments

Dr. Henry Co has gone out of his way to provide his students with more access to affordable texts. He has connected his students to websites where they can legally download free textbooks. “The students are happy” says Dr. Co.

A Few Faces of Our “Featured Faculty”

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Plans for the future– Update email templates to publicize the services – Prepare timeline/work plan for activities– Provide opportunities for faculty to

showcase/share what they are doing– Provide workshops/training sessions about

available services– Increase participation in “featured faculty” program

with self-nomination available online

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona

Important things to remember– A large part of this program is to make faculty aware of

the various services available to help them find or developed high quality and affordable course materials

– We’re here to facilitate what many of them are already doing

– We’re offering a gift not a burden– There’s plenty of help out there– Have fun and continue to build great relationships!
