EDITORIALDear friends of the Alliance Française, It is a great pleasure for me to join the Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam. Just arrived in Tanzania, I have appreciated the strong commitment of the team that brings the structure to cultural project and French language teaching. I am determined to continue the work done for years by bringing my experience and knowledge of French cultural networks. My project is to offer the best of French culture in the fields of performing arts, visual arts, literature and film. The Alliance Française will be part of a partnership approach alongside major cultural and economic actors in Dar es Salaam. Our priority is to help you discover the diversity and richness of France. Turned towards Tanzanian and regional artists, the Alliance aims at placing France at the center of its activity. Thus, foreign artists will be involved in meetings with all public and especially young people. Exchanges are organized in collaboration with the main Alliance Française partners and will create a link between artists and audiences. Circus performers, musicians, magicians, dancers, photographers or street artists will be regularly presented in our programs. French culture involves also scientists, authors; cooks ... contacts are underway to make the next program, a showcase of France. From this November and in close collaboration with the Embassy of France, we will have the pleasure to host a dance - Hip-Hop group from Nantes, in western France. The next program will also feature highlights around Paris of the coming event that will be hosted by the city from November 30 to December 11, the COP21, Climate Change Conference. Before wishing you all the best for the coming holiday season, I invite you to enjoy these cultural encounters with family or friends. At the Alliance Française we are driven by desire for diversity and quality.

Alliance Française6.30pm

ENTRANCE FREE

Present-day Chad. Adam, sixty something, a former swimming champion, is pool attendant at a smart N’Djamena hotel. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son Abdel. Terribly resentful, he feels socially humiliated. The country is in the throes of a civil war. Rebel forces are attacking the government. The authorities demand that the population contribute to the “war effort”, giving money or volunteers old enough to fight off the assailants. The District Chief constantly harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless; he only has his son....

The exhibition starting at the Alliance Française on the 10th of November and running until the 22nd, will display artworks not yet exhibited by new and exceptionally talented Tanzanian visual artists and a few invited foreign artists.

For the Tanzanian participation, you will discover in particular, Ramsy King, an essentially  self-taught artist (born in Zanzibar) with a minimal contact with the University of Dar-es-Salaam Fine and Performing Arts Department, who has succeeded on its own practice to assemble a very personal and dashing style of painting.

Another Tanzanian artis also featured in the exhibition, Mathew Andrew Simbila (born in Tabora), has taken a very different road to represent wildlife, going through a very brief Tingatinga initiation  to then liberate his refrained natural sketching ability and dramatically rejuvenate this particular genre of painting.

Algiers, 1920’s. Rabbi Sfar has more than one problem. His beautiful daughter is becoming a teenager and above all, his parrot-killing cat has just started talking! The delivery of a box from Russia further complicates things when a painter is discovered inside, more dead than alive. He is on a quest for a hidden tribe and its mythical city in Africa. Convinced that the city exists, he sets off on an incredible adventure, taking with him the Rabbi, his cat, a wise old Arab Sheikh and an eccentric Russian billionaire. Sfar’s style and vision carries a universal message of tolerance, in this highly original, beautifully crafted film, celebrating a joyful and multi-colorful return to hand-drawn 2D.

Airports as growth drivers: Sharing the Tanzanian vision and

French expertise

Alliance FrançaiseStarts 8.30am

ENTRANCE FREE

The sector of transport plays a pivotal role in Tanzanian economy with a direct contribution to GDP over 5%, and significant indirect impacts on the development of tourism, mining and agriculture. The sector is growing by 5% per year over the decade. However, the Tanzanian airport infrastructures suffer of shortcomings that impede the development of air transport, while tourism is one of the most dynamic sectors of the country with today over one million tourists contributing for $ 1.5 billion. Stakeholders, representatives of Ministry of Transport, Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), as well as representatives of the AfDB, the World Bank, the European Commission, and French companies, will share the Tanzanian vision of airports development as growth drivers and experience of French companies
