OPENING CEREMONY AND AWARDSLaunching the convention at the opening ceremony on Sat-urday, Roger Furness, executive director, welcomed dele-gates to Barcelona—it was the furthest south the AES hadever come in Europe, he explained, and a new conventioncenter provided the ideal venue for the coming four days.Adding her own welcome, Theresa Leonard emphasized inparticular the growing importance of the student and tuto-rial programs at this convention. Sunny Spain played host for the first time to the Society’sEuropean convention, the AES 118th, held in Barcelonafrom May 28 to 31, bringing audio engineers from aroundthe globe to this magnificent city of bustling activity andGaudi architecture. AES President, Theresa Leonard,pointed out in her greeting that Barcelona is ranked in thetop five of Europe’s most desirable destinations and itsbrand-new CCIB convention center provided ample accom-modation for such a large-scale international event. Underthe energetic leadership of cochairs Eloi Batlle and LuisOrtiz Berenguer, the 118th convention committee assem-bled a program offering something for all comers, in partic-ular pioneering a series of live sound seminars that ran

throughout the convention. This was particularly appro-priate as Spain is well known for its

Receiving Board of Governors’ Awardswere Jan Adamczyk for dedicated service to thePolish Section and Reinhard Sahr for chairing theAES 116th Convention in Berlin last year. Fellow-ships were awarded to Irina Aldoshina for out-standing dedication to audio education in Russiaand for her pioneering work in the establishment ofthe AES sections in St. Petersburg and Moscow,Akira Asakura for significant contributions tophonograph cartridge technology and standards,Kimio Hamasaki for contributions to multichannelaudio systems with natural spatial impression, JanRomijn for contributions to building acoustics andservice to the AES Netherlands Section, MariannaSankiewicz for outstanding contributions to audioeducation and to the AES, Christopher Struck forvaluable contributions to transducer test and mea-surement in the audio and hearing industries, andto Jürgen Wahl for significant educational presen-tations at AES conventions and to many studentsections throughout the Society.

The Distinguished Service Medal is given inrecognition of outstanding service to the Societyand was awarded on this occasion to John Nunn,longstanding chair until recently of the AES Stan-dards Committee. John contributed significantlyto raising the quality of AES standards in theaudio industry. Upon receiving his award he said

that it was a humbling experience to be among the illustri-ous company of those who received the medal. “Why do Ido this?” he asked himself. Most importantly, it was thefriends he had made, some no longer with us, notably Patri-cia Macdonald, formerly executive editor of the Journal,and Dan Queen, formerly standards manager. John wrylynoted his reputation for plain speaking in Society forumsand encouraged the AES to be bold in the future.

Following the awards presentations keynote speaker RayGillon entertained the audience with his talk entitled “Hol-lywood’s Foreign Language Dubbing, the Technologies,Talents and Trivia.” Gillon’s command of snippets of myr-

He put these to good use herewith humorous examples of foreign language translations ofHollywood English; his wit touched on the linguistic pecu-liarities (to English speakers, of course) of numerous Euro-pean languages. The cinema business in Europe is growing,he pointed out, with people in Madrid taking in an averagefour films per capita per year now as opposed to 1.7 tenyears ago. Foreign language overdubs are big business. TheLion King for example was dubbed into more languagesthan any other, including Zulu, and Harry Potter 2 wasreleased in 37 versions. This often meant a lot more thansimply overdubbing dialogue, as musical content often hadchoruses and lyrics that needed to be rerecorded.

in audio technology. Digidesign made the European launchof ICON D-Command medium format console system.Based on the design principles of the successful ICON con-sole, the D-Command is smaller and complements ProToolssoftware, which also received a face-lift in the form of itsversion 6.9 release having new postproduction and advancedmixing functionality. A range of new ProTools plug-ins wasalso available from different companies, including CEDAR’sRetouch graphical restoration and audio processing tool,which is now available for the first time on this platform.

Attracting considerable attention on the exhibition floorwas Fairlight’s Dream Constellation XT large-format mixingconsole. This new mixer, powered by a 240-channel QDCengine with six-band parametric EQ, dynamics, and 12 auxsends per channel has its processing housed in a single 8Urackmount box. Organic LEDs are used to provide high-res-olution display of control positions on each assignable chan-nel strip, and the console can handle surround mixing up tothe 7.1-channel format. A wide range of interfacing optionsare available including analog, AES, and MADI.

Mandozzi Electronics from Switzerland introduced dele-gates to its SERIX digital mixer, a component in the com-pany’s digital radio house line-up, designed for on-air and pro-duction applications. The SERIX is intended to ease thetransition between analog and digital technology and conse-

quently adopts similar user controls to its GMIX products, alsobeing controllable externally via a network interface from aPC. Addressing the interface between console control surfaceand digital audio workstation, Euphonix made the Europeandebut of its System 5MC integrated DAW controller. Thisinnovative control surface is capable of controlling EuConprotocol applications such as Nuendo and Pyramix as well asHUI protocol systems such as ProTools and Logic Pro.

Plenty of high-quality transducers were in evidencearound the convention, with PMC providing the monitoringfor surround sound workshops and launching its latestIconic Blue versions of the digitally amplified activenearfield monitors, DB1S-A and TB2S-A. Furthermore, anAES regular from Finland, Genelec, was promoting its 8000series loudspeakers and, in particular, the newest 8020Awith 4-inch drivers and bi-amplification complemented bythe 7050B LSE subwoofer to extend the bass response downto 25 Hz. Soundfield’s latest offering, the ST350 Portable, isa surround microphone that can be powered either by bat-tery or mains for mobile applications. The company alsoshowed its Surround Zone plug-in, which brings the spatialprocessing of the microphone into the ProTools, Nuendo,and SADiE digital audio workstations.

and video media, including HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disc.The DualDisc format was also emphasized, enabling ahybrid CD/DVD structure that can contain high-resolutionMLP lossless surround audio on the DVD-Audio layer.

Audio codec specialist, DTS, announced a strategic part-nership with C-Media Electronics that will enable DTSConnect to be implemented on a range of PC sound cardsand USB modules. DTS Connect provides an SPDIF outputto a digital surround sound decoder as well as Neo:PC,which is a matrix surround decoder designed to upmixstereo content to 7.1 surround. The company also intro-duced its Pro Series Network Encoder, designed to offer thefull range of DTS encoding options on a network server formulti-user applications.

A full program of 31 exhibitor seminars during the fourdays of the convention enabled delegates to gain a more in-depth view of the latest technology from companies such asYamaha, Bridgeco, Texas Instruments, Panasonic, MayahCommunications, 2+2+2 Surround, Audio Precision, Brüeland Kjær, Merging Technologies, Holophone, MandozziElettronica, D.A.V.I.D., and Wavefront.

LIVE SOUND SEMINARSThroughout the convention Room 111 was dedicated to alive sound theme, with packed seminars on topics including

DJ Mixing, Loudspeaker Line Arrays, Digital Mixing inLive Sound, Live Mixing (in-ear and front-of-house monitor-ing), and Remote-Controlled Amplifiers and EqualizationSystems. The aim of the DJ Mixing session, run by DavidAmo and Julio Navas, was to provide an overview of thetechnology used for DJ sessions. Pushing forward the themeof sound reinforcement, Sennheiser staged a four-hourdemonstration of live mixing and wireless monitoring, usinga range of its microphones and monitoring systems. Theyemployed two well-known engineers, Wayne “Heights” Git-tens and Oliver Voges to demonstrate and explain monitorand front-of-house mixes.

PAPERSThe scope of paper sessions dedicated to the reporting of thelatest audio research and development at AES conventionscontinues to swell. Here at the 118th there was a strongemphasis on psychoacoustics and listening tests, with twopapers sessions and a poster session on the topic, as well as anumber of papers on the related topics of spatial perceptionand processing. Quality-evaluation methods also dominatedthe session on automotive audio, with three papers from ateam of Danish authors on the development of a listening testsystem for automotive audio, which used binaural simulationwith head tracking to enable the comparison of in-car ➥

audio systems. Multichannel sound filled two papers ses-sions and a poster session with an emphasis on controllingand evaluating the quality of reproduction. There was alsoconsiderable interest in the capture and use of spatial impulseresponses with convolution techniques to render the acous-tics of spaces accurately over any loudspeaker array. Roomcompensation in wavefield synthesis systems was also fea-tured as were aspects of microphone array design.

An extensive session on analysis and synthesis of soundcovered diverse topics including the transformation of vocalsolo to unison choir and the extraction of features such asonsets and dynamics from audio signals, as well as the gen-eration of expressive music performances. Numerousposters on the same topic area included subjects such as beattracking, automated transcription, and chord identification,demonstrating the ways in which high-level content analysisis being related to low-level features of audio signals.

WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALSA strong tutorial seminar line-up is now a reg-ular feature of AES conventions, providing anexcellent opportunity for learning about audiofundamentals and new technology areas. Pre-sented by key academics and industry expertsin their respective fields, these included FloydToole’s extensive guide to the acoustics andpsychoacoustics of loudspeakers in smallrooms, during which he asked questions suchas “To what extent can we eliminate theroom?” and “What should we measure in smallrooms?” This was well complemented by DirkNoy and John Storyk’s seminar on acousticissues concerning small-studio environments,in which they addressed some of the uniqueacoustical problems inherent in the design ofreal world rooms. Loudspeaker basics, by JuhaBackman, Neville Thiele, and David Clark,rounded off the package.

Jeff Levison and Ronald Prent tackled thetopical question of surround music mixing andthe approaches to perspective, considering thevarious technical and artistic options open tothe audio engineer. Digital audio experts Karl-heinz Brandenburg and Marina Bosi presenteda whistlestop tour of the principles of percep-tual audio coding, taking listeners through theprinciples of the various MPEG standards andAC-3. There were also engaging sessions onsubjective microphone evaluation, design and

use of microphone preamplifiers, the art of jazz recording,distance and depth perception, surround sound for documen-tary films, and Linux for audio.

In the workshops a strong interdisciplinary theme was inevidence, with two sessions on aspects of semantic audioanalysis, which concerns the extraction of meaningful infor-mation from audio signals. In an interactive session onHearing Meaning in Machine Listening, the panel consistedof Jens Blauert, well-known professor of communicationacoustics, Ute Jekosch, whose background is in semioticsand linguistics, James Ballas, a psychologist from the NavalResearch Institute in the U.S., and Jan Berg, with a back-ground in recording engineering and psychoacoustics. Thesepanelists debated with the audience about links between lin-guistic meaning structures, the sound objects we recognizeas listeners, and the challenge that is presented to machinelistening systems if they are to address the higher level cog-nitive functions of human listening, in order to take accountof the more abstract meanings of sounds. Making MusicSmarter, chaired by Mark Sandler, covered semantic audioresearch projects taking place in Europe, providing a goodoverview of the current state of this exciting field. Further-ing the interdisciplinary theme, What’s Shakin’ You was

the subtitle of a session on audiohaptic interaction, led by WilliamMartens of McGill University.Haptics is the study of kinaestheticor tactile stimulation of skin orbody, and researchers have beenstudying the ways in which vibra-tory or motion feedback can beincorporated with sound reproduc-tion, determining the effects ofsuch signals on the listener. Resultsshow that the optimum synchro-nization between haptic stimula-tion and auditory signal depends quite strongly on the natureof the signal, and that vibration often needs to precedesound by a small amount.

Broadcasters got together to consider the problems of imple-menting 5.1 surround sound, including issues related to down-mixing (chaired by Günther Theile) and practical issues relat-ing to the transition to surround (chaired by Kimio Hamasaki).George Massenburg was keen to insist on the importance ofartistically excellent 2-channel mixes, undertaken separately tosurround mixes, and other panelists agreed that this was anideal to strive for. However, they felt that there were occasionson which this ideal might not be realized in practice and pro-posed some alternative semi-automatic approaches to down-mixing that might be aesthetically satisfactory when presentedwith the need to create a two-channel mix out of a five-chan-nel master.

SPECIAL EVENTSConvention social events provided an opportunity to meetold friends and make new ones at the end of a day’s hardwork. The mixer party on the first night was an informalgathering, allowing delegates to enjoy the Barcelonaevening on the convention center’s terrace, while the ban-quet at the Harbor View Restaurant was set next to the OldPort of the city, enabling diners to enjoy specialties of theregion and Spanish musical entertainment.

Graham Blyth did the Society proud once again with anorgan recital on the remarkable instrument at La Seu Cathe-dral, completed in 1994 by Gabriel Blancafort, intended torecreate the original organ from 1540. The subtle flutes and

expressive reeds of the organ were shown off to greatadvantage in works such as “Les Fifres” (The Fifes) byDandrieu and Bach’s “Partita O Gott, du frommer Gott.”

Stanley Lipshitz, whose reputation for accurate andstraightforward speaking about the principles of digitalaudio is well known, was the proud presenter of the HeyserMemorial Lecture entitled “Digital Audio: The Good, theBad, and the Ugly.” During his talk, Lipshitz explained howthe principles of digital audio had long been shown to betheoretically sound, that converters could easily be madelinear, and that the process of A/D conversion and D/A con-version did not perform fundamentally flawed operations onaudio signals. He did nonetheless play some howlinglyawful examples of how not to do it, culled from a selectionof commercial releases that he has collected over the years,containing unpleasant distortions of various kinds. Thank-fully, those days are all but over, he said. He asked whetherthere were really any problems left to be solved in digitalaudio and concluded that the last hurdle was to understandthe effects of filters, since it was these that band-limit thesignal and someone needs to determine what can really beheard and what cannot. Only then will the debates overbandwidth requirements be laid to rest.

TECHNICAL TOURSBarcelona and its environs offered a wide range of venues forthose who could spend a few hours away from the CCIB andsee some of the many studios and cultural centers. Theregion’s public television broadcaster, Televisió de Catalunya,played host to a visit on the Sunday afternoon. On Monday ➥

118th Conventionvisitors could choose to visit the Gran Teatre del Liceu(Barcelona’s opera house) and the Auditori de Barcelona (anew cultural complex) with the Escola Superior de Música deCatalunya (the city’s music conservatory). Tuesday saw visitsto the Music Technology Group of the Universitat PompeuFabra, a research group under the direction of Xavier Serrathat published widely at AES conventions; and MEDIAPRO,one of Europe’s leading audiovisual groups. The conventionwas rounded off with a visit to Sonoblok, a dubbing and post-production studio for film and video consisting of six dialoguerecording rooms, two video sound mixing rooms, three filmsound mixing rooms, and ten edit and control rooms.

STUDENT ACTIVITIESA vibrant program of student activities made the Barcelonaconvention one of the most active yet. Chair of the StudentDelegate Assembly, Martin Berggren, led the opening ses-sion during which student section activities were discussedand new officers for the SDA were nominated. A studentdinner and beach party were held on the Saturday eveningto enable visitors to get to know each other. The followingday saw the Education Fair and an opportunity for one-on-

one mentoring with distinguished audio industry profes-sionals including Jim Anderson, Ray Gillon, Miles Roberts,Xavier Serra, Thomas Sporer, and Günther Theile. A num-ber of students snagged summer internships during thementoring sessions.

The student recording competition was divided into threeclasses this time—classical (judged by Kimio Hamasaki,Wolfram Graul, and Jonathan Stokes), jazz/folk (judged byJim Anderson and Lars Palsig) and rock/pop (judged byJordi Mora, Suso Ramallo, and Jordi Soler). There was achance to submit items both in 2-channel stereo as well as insurround, enabling students to experiment with the both for-mats and to obtain feedback from those who make a livingout of audio mixing and production. DTS, Magix, Neu-mann, PMC, and Sennheiser donated prizes for the winners.

AES FORGES FORWARDBehind the scenes the many committees of the Societyworked to plan the future business of the AES. The Techni-

cal Council now has a record 21 Technical Committees toplan and coordinate work in subjects ranging from acous-tics and sound reinforcement to two new committees onhuman factors and audio forensics. Standards activities,under the guidance of Richard Chalmers, Standards Com-mittee chair, and Mark Yonge, standards manager, covereda full program throughout the convention, with 16 differentmeetings of the various working groups. At the Board ofGovernors meeting (see next page), under the leadership ofAES President Theresa Leonard, the society’s businessplans and future development were debated. The increasinginternational presence of the AES, arising from a recordnumber of over 14,000 members, gives rise to a large boardof governors with representatives from regions as far flungas South America, Australia, Japan, Europe, Russia, andthe United States. This reinforces the AES’s position as theprincipal international learned body for audio engineeringat a time when audio technology and features can be foundin a more diverse range of applications than ever before. ➥
