Air Niugini’s current fleet includes two Bombardier Dash 8-100 aircraft (one configured as a freighter), three 36-seat Q200 and three 50-seat Q300 aircraft. Formed in 1973, the airline serves 23 domestic points plus ten international routes in Asia, Oceania and Australia. “The Q400 NextGen aircraft follows in the footsteps of a long line of robust and reliable de Havilland and Bombardier turboprops that have served our airline very well over the years,” said Wasantha Kumarasiri, Chief Executive Officer, Air Niugini. “The aircraft’s ‘hot and high’ capabilities and its ability to operate on shorter runways are especially important for our route network, while its speed, fuel-efficiency, low emissions and comfortable cabin were also key factors in our selection.” “Air Niugini has been a respected customer since the early 1980s when the airline acquired three 50-seat de Havilland Dash 7 aircraft,” said Gary R. Scott, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We are naturally delighted that the airline continues to be loyal to our products.” Bombardier has now recorded firm orders for 363 Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft. As of July 31, 2009, 257 of these had been delivered to customers. Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft are in service with, or have been ordered by more than 30 operators in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

The Mexican Ministry of Defense Orders 6 EC725 Helicopters from Eurocopter Eurocopter has chalked up another success in Latin America: The Mexican Ministry of Defense has placed an order for six EC725 helicopters. The medium-lift helicopters will mainly be used for transport and civil security missions. This new order—the first ever placed with Eurocopter by the Mexican Ministry of Defense—will help reinforce the European helicopter manufacturer’s presence in Mexico. The Mexican Naval Ministry already operates Panther helicopters manufactured by Eurocopter, and the EC225 and Super Puma currently serve the Mexican President. Some 350 Eurocopter helicopters are in service in the region, and the Group's market share has progressed steadily to more than 50% today.

Eurocopter has been present in Mexico for more than 25 years. In 1982, the subsidiary Eurocopter de Mexico SA (EMSA) was opened to cover Central America, the Caribbean, Columbia, Venezuela and Ecuador. The main activities of the subsidiary, which now has a staff of 165 employees, are maintenance, aircraft assembly, customization, and technical and logistics support for the Eurocopter fleet in the region. In response to rapid market growth, the Group has become a major provider of training for pilots and technicians in the region through partnership agreements with educational institutions such as the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), (CONALEP) Mexico’s National Technical Professional School and the country’s Pilot Training Academy. Another response to this rapid growth has been the development of the Group’s industrial activities in Mexico, and talks are currently underway with the Mexican authorities to decide on the location of an industrial plant. The EC725 is the latest member of the Cougar family. The medium-lift, twin-engine helicopter in the 11-ton class is equipped with five main rotor blades. With its impressive fuel capacity, the EC725 offers flight endurance of 5.5 hours. It can carry up to 29 passengers in addition to the two pilots. The EC725 was designed to perform a wide range of missions, including search and rescue, long-distance transport, emergency medical services and logistics support. Before the current contract was signed, 151 orders for the EC725 and its civil version (the EC225) had already been received from 17 different customers. Its multi-purpose capabilities made it the logical choice of the Mexican Ministry of Defense.

Itzhak Nissan, president and chief executive officer, IAI, said, “The G250 presents another example of what is possible when two great companies collaborate, combining their state-of-the-art engineering with cutting-edge production skills. The teams have produced the best mid-size aircraft of its kind, and I want to join Joe in thanking everyone who worked on the G250. They have proven that such collaboration leads to great success and achievement.” The G250 offers the largest cabin and the longest range at the fastest speed in its class. It is capable of traveling 3,400 nautical miles at 0.80 Mach and has a maximum operating speed of 0.85 Mach. With an initial cruise altitude of 41,000 feet, the G250 can climb to a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet. “Our customers played a significant role in the design of this aircraft,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “Because of their input, this aircraft features increased speed and range, excellent takeoff performance, an all-new Gulfstream wing, the signature Gulfstream T tail, best-in-class Honeywell engines and the PlaneView 250™ cockpit based on Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics. Together, these elements make the G250 a best-in-class aircraft and one its owners can appreciate and fly with pride.” David Dagan, corporate vice president and general manager, Commercial Aircraft group, IAI, said, “The collaboration between the manufacturing and the design teams, using the Integrated-Product-Teams approach, made one and one equal more than two. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this success.” In terms of passenger comfort, the G250 features the largest cabin in its class, with 17 percent to 35 percent more floor area than any other super mid-size business jet. The additional space provides for a larger lavatory, an improved galley and increased storage. The aircraft also features 19 panoramic windows, industry-leading sound levels, a vacuum toilet system and in-flight access to 120 cubic feet of usable volume in the baggage compartment. Gulfstream announced the G250 on Oct. 5, 2008, at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Annual Meeting and Convention in Orlando, Fla. The aircraft is on schedule for first flight later this year and is expected to be certified in 2011. Entry-into-service of the G250 is also planned for 2011.

Lockheed Martin Delivers First Set Of P-3 Orion New Production Wings to Norway Lockheed Martin delivered the first set of new production P-3 Orion wings to the company’s launch customer, the Royal Norwegian Air Force, on Sept. 25. The milestone delivery ushers in a new era of P-3 life cycle sustainment. “These new wings take Lockheed Martin’s long-standing commitment to the sustainment and support of the P-3 Orion to the next level,” said Ray Burick, Lockheed Martin P-3/S-3 Programs vice president. “Working with our many P-3 customer operators worldwide, we identified a coming need to replace P-3 wings. We established the P-3 wing production line to meet that need and to ensure that our customers’ P-3s are patrolling the skies for decades to come. We’re proud to announce that our customers, beginning with the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF), will begin to reap the benefits of those efforts.”

The new production wings are the cornerstone of Lockheed Martin’s P-3 Aircraft Service Life Extension Program (ASLEP). ASLEP replaces the outer wings, center wing lower surface assembly, horizontal stabilizer, wing and horizontal stabilizer leading edges and various filet fairings. All necessary fatigue-life limiting structures are replaced, leading to significantly reduced maintenance and sustainment costs. New alloys are employed that provide a fivefold increase in corrosion resistance. ASLEP is the only solution that removes all current airframe flight restrictions on the P-3. The RNoAF will receive six life extension kits, two conditional kits and engineering support under the contract. Other ASLEP customers to date include U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Canada and Taiwan. Additionally, the U.S. Navy has contracted with Lockheed Martin for 13 sets of P-3 outer wings. “Lockheed Martin is committed to the complete life cycle sustainment of its aircraft, and our total range of P-3 support capabilities epitomizes that commitment,” said Rob Weiss, Lockheed Martin Global Sustainment executive vice president. “Once the Norwegian P-3s are fitted with these new wings and the accompanying ASLEP components, the RNoAF will be able to execute their maritime patrol missions with confidence well into the future.”

MD Helicopters, Inc. Sets 15-Year Benchmark on Deliveries MD Helicopters, Inc (MDHI) has announced that it set a 15-year record for deliveries in 2008. The company manufactured and delivered more than 50 aircraft last year, the best performance since 2000 when it delivered 38 aircraft and the most since 1993, when it was still part of McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Under the direction of Chief Executive Officer Lynn Tilton, MD Helicopter also had its busiest December on record with seventeen aircraft completed. And for the first time since investment funds of Patriarch Partners, LLC purchased the company in 2005, the financial performance is positive. "We set very ambitious targets for ourselves in 2008," Tilton said. "Had we managed our supplier base better we would have shipped more aircraft - we delivered the balance of our plan in the first months of 2009. The year-over-year improvements are a credit to the hard work and dedication of our employees who labor each day to produce the finest rotor aircraft in the industry." Among customers taking delivery in December were Chris and Ann Burrows of Walker Creek Ranch in Casper, WY and Frans van Bakel and Vicky Riepen of VB Logistics in Overpelt, Belgium.

The Burrows will use their new MD 530F on their two ranches in Casper that total more than 30,000 acres. They raise both sheep and cattle, and Chris is both a pilot and FAA Certified Airframe and Power plant Mechanic. He completed MDHI Pilot and Mechanic training this year in Mesa. The region he will cover with his new aircraft includes high elevations, high density altitudes and remote rugged terrain. The MD 530F, noted for hot and high performance and ease of maintenance in the field is ideally suited for this topography. When asked how he likes his new helicopter, Chris said, "It’s the best helicopter in the world." Frans van Bakel and Vicky Riepen, both helicopter pilots, accepted a new MD 520N with leather seats and a Chelton Flight System Flightlogic EFIS System. The couple will use their new aircraft primarily for IFR training for commercial pilots in addition to courier and lift work. Their heliport in Overpelt is close to a highly populated residential area where noise is a major concern. They selected the MD 520N for its reduced noise levels, safety, agility and power. Frans and Vicky took their new aircraft on a sightseeing tour of Southern California before shipping it to Belgium. "The love of our aircraft and the excitement it creates when delivered is what keeps me devoted to this company," said Tilton. "We have rebuilt this company from the customer backward---finding new ways to meet the customers’ needs and desires. We continue to raise the bar." what makes this company exciting.

Boeing Flight-Tests Optional 737 Carbon Brakes Boeing is testing Goodrich-developed carbon brakes on a Continental 737-900ER with expectations of better performance and weight savings of up to 700 pounds, or roughly equivalent to four extra passengers. We expect [that] flight-testing to be complete by the end of June and that the Goodrich brakes will enter service later this year after the certification documentation is complete. Customers will then have two suppliers to select from for carbon brakes. Messier-Bugatti carbon brakes were certified last year and are already in service with several customers,» says a company spokesman. Testing on the 737, which began in Seattle a week ago, has now moved to Roswell, N.M., where last weekend the brakes were scheduled to undergo tortuous rejected takeoff and performance landing tests on the airport’s long runways. Goodrich was originally scheduled to complete testing and certification of new wheels and carbon brakes in 2008, having been selected by Indonesia-based 737-900ER carrier Lion Air; however, tests revealed the need for a wheel redesign, which led to delays in testing and certification until this May, confirms Boeing.

The Goodrich carbon brake option uses the Duracarb carbon heat sink material, compared to the Messier-Bugatti-developed oxidation-resistant Sepcarb carbon brakes, which were successfully certificated in mid-2008. The Messier-Bugatti carbon brakes entered service in August 2008 on a Delta 737-700. Aside from lower weight, carbon brakes are expected to be cheaper to maintain over time, have longer endurance (average of 2,200 landings per overhaul in the case of Messier-Bugatti) and faster cooling-off, which gives a quicker turnaround time for the aircraft after landing. The weight savings also results in reduced fuel burn, generating lower carbon dioxide emissions and saving an estimated $50,000 per year per aircraft in fuel costs.
