What is STEP AP209 (ISO 10303-209)?
• STEP AP209 edition 2 « Multidisciplinary analysis and design »
is an international standard for sharing, exchange and long term archiving of
engineering design and multi-disciplinary simulation data
managed in configuration.
• Within STEP AP209, design and analysis have separate but related product
definitions, which allows both activities to be independently controlled.
• Many types of analyses may be attached to the same product.

Business needs for STEP AP209
• Typical business needs for using STEP AP209 are:
Integration between heterogeneous authoring applications (i.e. CATIA V5,
Creo Parametric, PATRAN, NASTRAN, FLUENT, NX Thermal, Simulia…)
Simulation for the digital twin
Visualization of simulation models and results (mesh, fields...)
Long term archiving and retrieval
Data exchange
Data migration.
• Today data exchange of engineering data seems to be covered by direct
interfaces maintenance issue
• Long term archiving requires the use of a « standardized open format »
The use of STEP is well developed for CAD 3D MBD and PDM interoperability.
STEP AP209 provides promising capabilities for CAE interoperability.
Slide 10 ASD SSG Nov. 2016

Benefits of STEP AP209
• Standardized information model and open format
- Stable, documented, non-proprietary
• Integration with ISO STEP AP242 ed1 “Managed model
based 3D engineering”
- STEP: comprehensive set of standards for the full product lifecycle
• Associativity Design/Analysis
- Loads and constraints can be applied either to elements of the mesh or to
geometric elements (i.e. all the nodes attached to this mesh element)
• Data model shared by many simulation disciplines
- Enabler for multi-disciplinary simulation

• Pilot study considers first 4 ATS models (NASTRAN format) that will
require implementation of basic AP 209 ed2 data model elements
• Models represent 1D, 2D and 3D finite element abstractions of a
constant section beam with various boundary conditions and loads
• ATS models are identified with ‘ATS’ + model number + ‘m’ +
version
• So far 2 companies have been selected for participation in the pilot:- EPM Jotne
- CT CoreTechnologie
