Aeroflot: Background

Flag carrier and biggest airline of the Russian Federation.

Operates both domestic and international passenger services, primarily from its hub at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow.

One of the world’s oldest airlines; traces its origins back to 1923.

Was the national airline of the Soviet Union and the world’s biggest airline during the Soviet period.

Has, after the collapse of the U.S.S.R., turned from a state-owned enterprise into a semi-privatised company ranking 19th most profitable in the world in 2007.

Is still viewed as Russia’s de facto national airline. 51% of Aeroflot is owned by the Russian Government. Has embarked on a fleet upgrading programme,

extensive route change, and an image overhaul. Joined SkyTeam in April 2006, during which it became

the alliance’s tenth member.

Aeroflot: Key people and Ownership

Key people: Aeroflot’s CEO position is occupied by Vitaly Savelyev as

of December 2013. Savelyev was nominated on 10 April 2009, succeeding

Valery Okulov. Even though Savelyev’s nomination was only supposed

to last until April 2014, Russia’s government extended it to another five years.

Ownership: As of December 2013, 51% of Aeroflot is state-run.
