Breadth of rangeDue to the breadth of range offered by Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, designers can specify seals that meet thechallenge of balancing cost effectiveness with performance on all aeroengine applications, including fan blade annulus fillers, fancowl and thrust reverser doors, heat exchangers, drive shafts, airintakes, fairings and coupling systems.

Turel® elastomer rangeFor static applications, O-Rings are available to meet all internationallyrecognized size standards, custom dimensions and moulded designs, inour Turel® range of high specification compounds, specifically developedfor the aerospace industry, which includes Nitriles, EPDMs,Fluorosilicones and Fluorocarbons. These innovative compounds helpmeet our aims of offering extended service life and exceptional sealingintegrity, demonstrating outstanding chemical resistance and operatingfrom an extreme low temperature of -54°C (-65°F), up to 260°C(500°F).

Isolast® Perfluoroelastomer Isolast® offers the ultimate in elastomer sealing, whether supplied asO-Rings, custom moulded parts or bonded to metal. Advanced Perfluoroelastomers (FFKM), Isolast® compounds are virtuallyinert and demonstrate almost universal chemical compatibility.Specialist grades, which operate at continuous temperatures up to325°C (617°F), are ideal for situations when seals encounter elevatedtemperatures in conjunction with aggressive media, having provensuperior capabilities in comparative testing within high temperaturelubrication systems in aeroengines.

Inventive Turcon® DesignsTrelleborg Sealing Solutions was the first company to realise the hugepotential of PTFE in aerospace sealing applications and pioneeredmost of the PTFE sealing technology commonly used today. Ourproprietary Turcon® material offers incomparable performancecharacteristics including friction reduction, abrasion resistance,exceptional chemical compatibility and the power to withstand highpressures and temperature extremes in rotary and linear movement,as well as, static situations. Variseal®

An extremely important product to the aerospace industry, Variseal®

spring energized Turcon® PTFE seals are field-proven in extremeaircraft operating conditions, having been used in the most demandingof aeroengine applications. Designed to fit in existing O-Ring grooves,with the correct selection of Turcon® compound, appropriate springmaterial and profile, Variseal® can provide the highest level of systemintegrity, even in the most aggressive and corrosive of chemical mediaat high temperatures up to 300°C (570°F) and pressures of30,000psi (2,000bar). For static and dynamic applications at highspeeds, they demonstrate low friction, leading to extended service life.

Wills Rings®

Wills Rings® are the original metal seals, providing the most effectiveoption for static sealing on connectors, flanges and plates for gasesand liquids. They exhibit the ultimate in reliability under extremes oftemperature, ranging from cryogenic to 850°C (1560°F) and severepressures up to 150,000psi (10,000bar), often being utilized whenfire safe sealing is required. Wills Rings® are available in a variety ofmetals, O or C cross section with either pressure filled or systempressure activation.

Varilip® PDRAt the leading edge of sealing developments, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions provides a broad range of custom and standardoptions based on engineered plastic and metal technologies.Outstanding, high performance Varilip® PDR rotary shaft seals,comprise a Turcon® PTFE sealing lip retained in a crimped or clampedmetal case. These single or multi-lip seals are ideal for use inaeroengine applications where, custom designed for each application,they demonstrate low friction and wear characteristics and offeralmost universal chemical compatibility over an extremely widetemperature range.

Varilip® PDR rotary shaft sealAt the leading edge of sealingdevelopments, TSS provides rotary shaftseals in custom and standard optionsbased on engineered plastic and metaltechnologies.

Airframe solutionsManufactured to standard or custom profiles, each airframe seal is hand-fabricated, with absolute attention to detail and qualityassured through 100% inspection. Focusing on aerodynamic efficiency,they offer reliability in service, along with efficiency in assembly andmaintenance. The use of advanced FEA combined with productqualification programs, including extensive testing and verification,leads to maximum service life. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions airframeseals, often from existing tooling are used within the engine, structuralgaps, wings, doors, hatches and windows, to meet customer needsthroughout the aircraft.

Complex geometriesTrelleborg Sealing Solutions works with major airframe manufacturersto produce advanced inflatable seals from 3-D models, which aretranslated into tooling the full size of the sealing profile, replicating theincreasingly complex geometries of airframe sections of, for instance,cockpits or doors. Such tools incorporate heating and pressurisationsystems for precise manufacturing control and with testing at line-side,zero defect quality is the objective.

Effective fire barrier sealsThrough material research, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developedan advanced composite fire seal, compliant with international standardISO 2685. This specifies that fire barrier seals must withstand flametemperatures of 1100°C (2012°F) for 15 minutes. In fact, tests haveshown that these seals are capable of exceeding this requirement,some withstanding the temperature for 30 minutes. A patented ‘split-seal’ option facilitates retrofitting without the need for dismantlingother parts of the system.

Developments meeting industry requirementsTrelleborg Sealing Solutions has unrivalled experience within theaerospace industry and this leads to development of innovativeproducts to meet specific requirements. Two examples are rotor bladefiller seals, which are sub-assembled to the metal rotor blade and ourunique method of coating glass fiber sleeving with PTFE. This providesproducts to reduce friction on metal clips and cable carriers for criticalareas where sheering may occur, such as near to helicopter rotorblades and other areas subject to high vibration.

Superior miniature sealingTo maximise aeroengine fuel efficiency, components are becomingsmaller and lighter and therefore the requirement for miniaturesealing is increasing. At only 12 millimeters (1/2 inch), a tiny Turcon® Variseal® proposed for an electrical connection on anengine, demonstrates all the same performance characteristics oflarger designs and meeting strict delivery and quality criteria, aresupplied in individual blister packs.

Inventive failsafe leak detectionAs it offered required resistance to extreme temperatures andchemical media at high speeds, Turcon® Varilip® PDR rotary shaft sealwas chosen for a critical aeroengine application. For absolute sealingintegrity, a second lip excluded media from the system in the unlikelyevent of seal leakage passed the first and as a failsafe, examinationfor leaked media between the two lips highlights any sealdeterioration.

Expert solution maximizes fuel efficiencyThrough partnerships with aeroengine manufacturers, TrelleborgSealing Solutions has developed an expertise in the manufacture ofannulus filler seals. Custom designed, they incorporate siliconeelastomers in conjunction with fabrics and either metallic or carboncomposites. The use of these has resulted in competitive advantage,through improved engine efficiency and lower operating costs.

Innovative manufacturing reduces friction Fuel pipes, helically wrapped around aircraft engines, are subjected tosignificant friction. Wear was found on these copper fuel pipes causedby the harder metal of the stainless steel clips that held them inplace; a potential fire hazard. The solution, to house the clips inTrelleborg Sealing Solutions PTFE glass braided sleeving, effectivelyreduced friction and wear, extending the life of the fuel pipes.

Annulus filler sealsConstructed from silicone elastomer withfabric reinforcement, annulus filler sealsimprove aeroengine fuel efficiency, animportant element in reducing overalloperating costs.

PTFE coated glass braided sleevingA proprietary method of manufacture, PTFEcoated glass braided sleeving effectivelyreduced wear caused by friction ofstainless steel clips on the fuel pipes ofaircraft engines.
