AEES GALAXY GAZETTE

¡Noticias de las Clases de Español!

It is hard to believe our school year is

almost over! What a great year we have had! The last month of school we will be

finishing up our units for the year and having our last game day. 2nd through 5th graders will be completing our unit on

clothing and body. This unit will combine many of the skills we learned this whole quarter. 2nd and 3rd graders will be writing

and performing puppet shows. 4th and 5th graders will be honing their Spanish writing skills as they write a paragraph in

Spanish all about themselves. Kindergarten and 1st graders will finish our unit on clothing before moving on to a mini-unit about families. Your children have learned

so much and we have had so much fun together!

If you would like your child to practice Spanish over the summer, please visit my website. There you will find many links to fun activities and games to practice many

different skills.

¡Les deseo unas vacaciones maravillosas! ¡Nos vemos en Agosto!

Wishing you the best of summer vacations! See you in August!

Spring has really sprung in the garden and the weather is a little warmer and more predictable. We have

weeded, removed rocks, and have cleaned out the dried branches and leaves. It is time to plant!

We have started our “Cinderella” pumpkin seedlings inside to get a jump on the growing season as pumpkins

need a long time to grow! We will be planting both seeds and young plants of vegetables, fruits, and flowers

in the garden in the next two weeks. Tomatoes, squash, carrots, pumpkins, green beans, zinnias and sunflowers are on our student gardeners’ wish lists of

things to grow, so we will give them a try!

We are having so much fun fixing up our garden and can’t wait to see what grows!

The Dirt - Garden Club News

May is here and with it beautiful Springtime growth as the trees bloom and leaf out,

flowers pop with color and our music classes learn American folk songs, music about

America, and music sung during the past couple centuries.. As we move toward the end of

another school year we reflect on many outstanding musical events here at AEES.

Music encompasses much of our everyday lives. In class we performed, experienced,

created, critiqued, heard and enjoyed the many facets of music. From playing African

drums to singing about St. Patrick, from Russian dances to an Irish Jig, from melodies

to rhythms, from classical to jazz, from

expression to notation, from the Caribbean to

Japan, from pop to opera, from Orff to

Kodaly, we did a lot this year; including performing

and learning how to be a good audience.

AEES Galaxy Singers will finish their year with

a performance of the National Anthem at the

May 15 Sky Sox game. Always a highlight of the

year, we look forward to honoring our country and

flag by singing on the infield at Security Service field. Thank you to the many parents who

helped make this year a rousing success. These fourth & fifth graders are a joy.

Music Club sang about their lives when they performed A Day in The Life of Me in March.

Thanks to the many parents who helped at rehearsals each week, and put on a stellar party

for the singers.

First Grade’s performance of Stone Soup: a “Rock” Opera was fun in April. These young

musicians displayed good stage presence and expression! Good job first grade. Thank you

to the many parents who helped stack chairs and clean up the gym after our performance.

I am honored to help your children grow through music here at AEES. Plans are already in

the works for next year’s music classes, Galaxy Singers and Music Club. Be looking for the

Galaxy Singers’ registration form when you return to school in August. Next year’s choir will

be a blast!

We will begin Spring benchmark literacy testing on May 3rd and 4th. Here is some information about the testing and answers to questions you may possibly have.

1. When do I bring my child for testing?

A: Please bring your child in on the day and time listed on the permission slip you received from their homeroom teacher.

2. How long will testing last?

A: K-1st grade students will test for the maximum of one hour. They will compete the DIBELS Next assessments (1 minute tests) as well as the Roots Mastery Assessment (for SFA reading.) 3-5th grade students will test for the maximum of one and a half hours. They will have time to complete fluency with the classroom teacher as well as take the Star Reading and Math assessments. Read Plan students will complete a PALS assessment as well.

3. When should I check in my student?

A: Research says that students test and learn better after physical exercise. You are welcome to have your student run around on the playground (with your supervision) or in the gym prior to checking in for Literacy Testing. Please wait in the parent waiting area or come

back to pick up your student at the scheduled pick up time.

Remember, there is no school for students on Thursday, May 3rd and Friday, May 4th. Students are asked to come only for their Literacy Testing appointment. Thank you for your support!

LUNCH CHOICES FOR

THURSDAY, MAY 10 & FRIDAY, MAY 11 Whether or not it’s your child’s Field Day, there is only ONE lunch choice on

each day:

Art News! Thank you to everyone who has stopped by to see their students’ art in our school Art Show! If you have not yet had the opportunity to see the artwork, there is still time to check it out. Artwork will be on display through our literacy testing days on May 3

rd and 4

th. Take a look at the amazing creations of our

kids and write some fan letters to the artists who caught your eye. Fan letters are available outside the main office.

I want to take a quick moment to thank you for supporting your student artists this year! It has been a fantastic year getting to know all of our amazing kids and their families. I am looking forward to another creative adventure next year.

I like to begin each new school year by providing students an opportunity to share how they were creative over the summer. So whether it is painting,

drawing, sidewalk chalk, creating a new game, sewing or building a fort, I look forward to hearing all about it. I hope you all have a fantastic summer break!

~Ms. Funk

Medication: Please come to the health room on the last day of school, May 23, or the day after, May 24, to pick up your student’s medication. An adult must pick up the medication; we cannot send it home with your student. Any medications left after May 24 will be discarded.

Forms: New ‘Permission to Administer Medication’ form(s) are needed for each school year and can be picked up at the school health office. Picking the forms up in May will allow you time over the summer to obtain the appropriate signatures.

Care Plans: If your student has an asthma inhaler or an epi-pen, the permission to administer these medications is “built into” the Asthma and Allergy Health Care Plans. New Asthma and Allergy Health Care Plans are needed each school year and can be picked up at the health office. Picking up the health care plans in May will allow you time over the summer to obtain the appropriate signatures.

Thank you and have a wonderful summer!

Reminder: End of Year Medication Pick Up

We have lots of exciting things happening in our library this last month of school. We have ordered new tables and chairs that will support students in their collaboration and critical thinking.

Mrs. Stephanie Flores painted a wall in our library for a green screen to help students invent. We have ordered our books from our library fundraiser that will help with information literacy. Our amazing

PTA will be have a buy one get one book fair May 3rd and May 4th. On Thursday, May 3rd, a representative from the Pikes Peak Library will be here from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM to sign families

up for library cards. The Pikes Peak Library summer reading program is called Summer Adventure and will be starting June 1st. The Pikes Peak Libraries have many fun and exciting events planned for students over the summer. Please, remember to build in reading time over the summer. Road trips are an excellent time to listen to audio books. Reading helps your child learn vocabulary, spelling, comprehension and most importantly about the world around them. Also, please don’t forget that

all library books are due by Friday, May 11th. Have a wonderful summer!

After School - 13 Sessions

Girls Reaching High is a healthy life skills program for girls in grades 4 & 5. We have fun, run, and play active games all while learning about friendship, handling peer pressure and bullying; we learn to speak kindly to ourselves and to encourage others, and how to be a great teammate. We will also be taking some optional Saturday hikes to continue to build our fitness level and learn some outdoor skills! We will be reaching high in so many ways-- including climbing real mountains!

We will meet on Monday and Friday afternoons, at AEES after school.

There is no fee, although girls can order a “Girls Reaching High” t-shirt

We have 3 optional Saturday hikes. A parent must attend with their child.

Our group is limited to 14 girls (a random lottery if necessary) in order to provide good supervision and a positive atmosphere.

Registration will come in Monday folders in August.

Researching about cultural

explorers may not sound

like a lot of fun. Nor may it be

your cup of tea to research

cultural artifacts. But, what

if you could put on an

improvisational skit where explorers were on a quest to return a lost cultural treasure? How

funny would it be if the explorers were being chased by a vampire….or the explorers took a

wrong turn into a horse stable? Sounds zany, right? Well, that’s exactly what Academy

Endeavour’s Destination Imagination did! They used research to present an improvisational

skit, integrate facts, and work together to overcome a ridiculous setback…all in five

minutes! Congratulations to Team Sassy Sasquatches (Mia Champagne, Kaitlyn Crawford,

Elena Dominic, Ella Pace, and Irene Wich) for placing 2nd place in the State of Colorado! The

Sassy Sasquatches have been invited to travel to Global Finals, but alas, they want to attend

their 5th grade Celebration and go bowling with their class on the last day. Who knew

sasquatches could bowl? Way to go, girls!

Wishing all of our AEES families a fun, safe, relaxing summer! Look for emails regarding information on our Back to

School Event and Get to Know You Conferences that will take place the

week that school starts in August. We look forward to seeing you all then!

The Last AEES Spirit Day of

the Year!

Summer is almost here! Dress like a

Friday, May 11

Each year more than 13 million students, 850,000 educators, and 27,000 schools participate in fundraisers to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For Rampart, this is our Bald for Bucks assembly. Rampart has now donated more than a quarter million dollars to LLS.

This would not have been possible without the support of Mountain Ridge Middle School, and Academy Endeavour, High Plains, and Academy International elementary schools. This year alone, Bald for Bucks and the entire Rampart community raised $89,066. Academy Endeavour raised over $4,000 of that!

We have just learned that this total places the Rampart High School community as #1 in the nation for the 2nd year in a row!

We are honored to support the patients and families that wake up each day facing another day of battling cancer. They are our inspiration and the reason we do what we do. If you shaved, donated, volunteered, or even attended a Bald for Bucks assembly, Thank you!
