Continue the Momentum: An Invitation from AEC’s ChairmanExtruders big and small have seen their businesses continue to ramp up in 2017, and some indications are that trend will continue into 2018. However, that momentum could be affected by a number of factors looming on the horizon. I invite you to join the Aluminum Extruders Council in beautiful San Diego, California for the 69th Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference to get a view of the economic, business, legislative and industry conditions that will help inform your decision making process this year.

The automotive market continues to speed along; building and construction activity has been picking up and reports from other extrusion market sectors are strong. What does 2018 have in store for us? Which factors may put the brakes on business and industry growth? What issues do we need to focus on to make sure we remain relevant, strong and influential? Come to the Annual Meeting to hear from experts who will be discussing the topics that may affect how we do business and meet the demand of increased aluminum extrusion use in the future. The program is packed with insights, inspiration and information covering the timely and relevant topics that pose threats and challenges and others that signal growth and success.

On Friday, with safety at the forefront of the headlines and of utmost importance, the Safety First Panel will feature speakers that provide insight, perspective and tactics to help all of us keep improving. Then, Mike Southwood of CRU will share his outlook for global aluminum prices, supply and demand in his Aluminum Industry Outlook. Curt Wells of The Aluminum Association will provide an industry view of shipments to help us better understand the dynamics of the major markets for aluminum.

On Saturday, the program is about education. Council reports will inform members about the progress of initiatives designed to expand aluminum extrusion knowledge and understanding both inside and outside the industry. Fair Trade is on the agenda, as well, to get us up to speed on our fight for a level playing field. Finally, our keynote speaker, Ross Shafer, will provide an informative and entertaining address asking “Are You Still Relevant?”

Round out your experience with networking events throughout the Annual Meeting designed to build and enhance relationships. Join us March 15–17 in San Diego and gain information, education and support from your Aluminum Extruders Council to help continue the momentum in growth and success.

Business Excellence Update: Educating Our IndustryCraig Werner, Kaiser AluminumCreating a “certification” program for extruders has been a long-term goal of the Council, coinciding with our ongoing educational offerings for new and current professionals. Key topic areas will include

industry best practices for safety, die correction, extrusion process and more. Armed with a wealth of material mined from webinars, workshops, and other sources, the Education Strategy Task Force (ESTF) is working toward an aluminum extrusion workforce development competency model—a tiered set of skills which are deemed necessary for extrusion team members to be effective in specific career areas. As competitive industries develop similar such programs, extruders will increasingly be disadvantaged in the job market without this. Get an early preview of this important education initiative from Business Excellence Steering Committee and ESTF Chair, Craig Werner.

The AEC Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference provides extrusion industry executives with information, economic analysis and business intelligence to help make informed decisions.

2018 Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference March 15–17 Hotel Del Coronado Coronado, California

Special Keynote Presentation Saturday, March 17

Ross ShaferBestselling Author • Comedian • TV Emmy Winner

Join us for an entertaining, insightful and energizing presentation from one of the most sought-after keynote speakers. Shafer offers entertaining and eye-opening perspectives for individuals and organizations to achieve success through a better understanding of the evolving influences around them.

Are You Relevant?Ross Shafer says, “Best practices are a moving target. Relevant leaders are able to sustain growth because they can evolve and adapt more quickly than their competition.” If you are an organization that is dedicated to ‘making your mark’ on your industry, then developing a culture of ongoing relevance will insure your future.

Staying Relevant is different from being current. Being “current” is awareness. Relevance is taking action to make sure you matter to your customers, your clients, your members, and your teams. If you don’t matter to your constituents, they can go away and not care if you exist. Ross says, “Our team examines 18 different industries and we cross-pollinate trends, buying habits, and cool, disruptive practices for the purpose of enlightening organizations to the possibilities of extreme relevance.”

Learn How to:• Harvest an endless trove of innovative ideas

• Find (and respond to) competitors hiding in your blind spots

• Predict the future of your industry before it’s too late.
