AEC Hackathon
“The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction)
Hackathon was created to give those designing,
building, and maintaining our built environment the
opportunity to collaborate with cutting edge
technologies and its developers and designers.”

The Challenge!
Chosen and presented by local construction companies and professionals.
“Develop a solution to aid in the reduction of the harmful environmental effects caused by the construction and use of the built environment”

Initial Ideas
✓ Steel cut optimiser
• Very niche market
• Not practical in the “real-world”
• Similar solutions exist
✓ Framework to monitor and alert smart building owners of their usage environmental footprint
• Already exists
• Beyond our capabilities in relation to IT and programming

“Why can’t we calculate the environmental impacts of a building’s
materials as it’s designed, in real-time; allowing for alternative options
to be explored as early as possible in the design phase?”

What is Life Cycle Analysis?
✓ A methodology for evaluating the environmental loads of processes and products during their whole life-cycle
✓ It examines environmental inputs and outputs related to a product or service life-cycle from cradle to grave
✓ The analysis includes the entire life-cycle of a product, process, or system encompassing the extraction and processing of raw materials; manufacturing, transportation and distribution; use, reuse, maintenance, recycling and final disposal

Life Cycle Inventory - LCI
✓ Database outlining the quantities of all environmental impacts of a product
✓ Detailed tracking of all flows in and out of a product
✓ Includes values such as raw resources or materials, energy by type, water, and emissions to air,
water and land

“What’s needed to carry out a LCA of a building?”
• Material volumes
• Environmental impacts of each material
• Density of each material
AECHackathon Winners: Conducting real-time Life Cycle Analysis of a building as it is modelled in Autodesk Revit
“How can we get this data?”
✓ Material Volumes• Available through Revit
“How can we get the material volumes into a format we can use?”
✓ Dynamo to Excel for further calculation

“How can we get this data?”
✓ Environmental impacts & density of each material• Available through an LCI database such as GaBi
“But we can’t get access to an LCI database at such short notice over the weekend”
✓ Create a rudimentary LCI “database” in Excel with data relating to common construction materials

Information required to conduct an LCA
✓ Material volumes
✓ Environmental impacts of each material
✓ Density of each material

2• A free, open-source graphical
programming tool.• Allows access to the API of several
pieces of software including Autodesk Revit, Navisworks and Fusion.
• Heavily influenced by Grasshopper for Rhino.
• Extremely useful for bulk manipulation
Dynamo can:• Create and modify complex parametric
geometry.• Read and write to and from external
databases.
There are three parts to a Dynamo node:1. Name - The Name of the Node with a
Category.Name naming convention.2. Ports - The receptors for Wires that
supply the input data to the Node as well as the results of the Node's action.
3. Main - The main body of the Node. The “Points.ByCoordinates” node

Future Potential
✓ Currently working in collaboration BIM Launcher to develop a Web Application.
✓ Integration into the BIM Launcher platform will allow users send their model to the cloud for
analysis at the click of a button.
✓ Will incorporate additional environmental analysis by linking the model to multiple cloud
based platforms such as BuildSim Hub.
