Course UnderstandingAE Design 1 challenges the students to investigate the design of building systems

through lectures and projects and to present conclusions in website format.A1 - What is AED-I All About? This project encourages the students to become familiar with all aspects of the course prior to the beginning of the class by exploring the course website. It gives each student an idea of what to expect in the upcoming weeks.A2 - Diagram AnalysisThis project introduces Sketchup-4 as a technique for producing 3D designs. It will also provide insight into what types of diagrams are appropriate for varied audiences.A3 - Structural DiagramsThis project explores different structural systems employed in building design. Each group will be expected to present a different system to the class.A4 - Structural SelectionThis project will create a resource to use when deciding what type of structural system will be appropriate for a specific application by giving criteria associated with the use of each system.A5 - HVAC DiagramsThis project will explore different types of HVAC systems employed in design work. Diagrams and explanations will provide clarity to the operations of these systems.A6 - HVAC SelectionThis project will create a resource to use when deciding on an appropriate system for a particular building application by providing specific criteria for the use of each system.A7 - Building AnalysisThis project will tie together all of the information learned in the previous projects. It will demonstrate our understanding of major building systems.

Speculations

Project Speculations

The projects are assigned in a logical progression for a building project.

Diagram Analysis provides a basis for the rest of the projects which focus on structural systems and HVAC systems.

In each of the focuses, the projects lead the student to explore many of the types of systems available and then create a matrix to aid in choosing the best option for a project.

Building analysis brings all of the investigations together.

As we progress through the term, the buildings we will be analyzing become more complex.

Your Future SkillsAccording to Professor Mitchell’s website, I will be able to do the following upon completion of this course:

Determine and analyze the major systems in a building.Know the major structural systems and be able to select one appropriate for a particular building.Know the major HVAC systems and be able to select one appropriate for a particular building type.Present building systems analyses in an effective manner orally, graphically, and written.Use web technology to research and present Architectural Engineering work.

Speculations

Skills Speculations I suspect that the structural projects will be more difficult for me than the HVAC projects as I have no structural experience. I have had some experience with different HVAC systems.

Posting of website has in the past created quite a challenge for me. Hopefully IRT & I will be able to cooperate throughout this term.

Team Work SiteForming Teams

As our groups will be assigned, we will have little say in this process. It is a good idea at the beginning to find out about experience, seriousness, and scheduling.

Phases of Team FormationThe concepts discussed as “Forming”, “Storming”, “Norming”, and “Performing” all discuss valid issues raised by a group of people attempting to cooperate.

Teamwork RolesThis section provides a good in-depth breakdown of necessary tasks within the team. However, some of the tasks may be combined or shared within the group.

MeetingsEstablishing a regular meeting time may not be appropriate for every team. Flexibility of schedules should also be considered.Everyone does not necessarily need to attend every meeting depending on how the topics and tasks have been shared through the team. Attendance should be discussed prior to the meeting to avoid wasted time.

DecisionsThis section seems to cover all major points of decision making well.

RecordsIn addition to the records discussed in this section, it will be important to create and maintain a project website.

DisputesDisputes happen… this gives good starting points for dealing with disputes.

Team Work Goals

Steps to creating an effective team:

Know strengths and weaknesses or experiences of teammatesDiscuss schedules to find possible meeting timesDefine responsibilities for team membersSet deadlines for tasksAllow time for unforeseen set-backsMeet to coordinate work effortsKeep effective records and maintain a project websiteMake group decisionsPrepare compromises for disagreements without allowing the disagreement to adversely affect the team

Suggestions:It would be of great help to find all of the information in the same area. In this project much of the information was on webCT while information such as the teamwork page were hosted outside of webCT. It was difficult to be sure to cover all of the information.
