Mandate of ACEI
“Responsible for actively identifying opportunities for the University of Calgary to encourage and improve
academic entrepreneurship, technology transfer and innovation.”
§ Emerged out of the Graduate Education Task Force§ Advisory to Ed McCauly, VP Research§ Comprised of faculty from across our campuses,
industry representatives and professional staff
§ 2014-2015 Goals:— Development of broader ACEI; reflecting campus diversity— Broad stakeholder engagement— [recommended] Strategic Plan for Entrepreneurship &

§ Make the UofC the entrepreneurial university in Canada by 2020— Focus on entrepreneurial thinking — Broad-based academic entrepreneurship
opportunities— Change culture to enable, support and reward
faculty & students for problem-driven research, entrepreneurship and innovation activities
— Increase collaboration with outside partner organizations
— Increase positive impact on society/industry— Alternative – but not: mandatory – approach to

Problem Driven Research (PDR) is extrinsically motivated and addresses issues from outside stakeholders using fundamental and applied research approaches. As a service to the community, Problem Driven Research is inherently collaborative and provides research solutions to businesses, government and non- government organizations.
