It’s Mike Mifflin!

Complex Director - Residence Halls

July 2016—Present

N Live-in, full-time professional staff member

N Primary role is management, administration, services, and activities in residential area of 712 students within 3 residence halls.

N Directly supervise 3 Associate Residence Directors.

N Indirect supervision of 16 student staff members within complex.

N On-site supervision of one full-time secretary.

N Coordinate and supervise 11 Desk assistants in collaboration with Associate Resident Directors.

N Assist with recruitment , selection, training, and evaluation of residential life staff members.

N Maintain and coordinate a yearly

N Implement and coordinate the departmental Panther Success Initiative in hall communities

To the voting members of the Illinois Residence Hall Association,

I am submitting this letter in consideration for Mike Mifflin to be named the IRHA Ad-visor of the Year at the upcoming Semis Conference. I have worked with Mike for a year in a half and in that time, I have been impressed with his excitement and engagement with the Resi-dence Hall Association (RHA) at Eastern Illinois University.

When Mike is dedicated to something, he goes all in. Mike does not make partial com-mitments, but instead shows an honest passion and focus on each element of the organization. Mike is fun to be around and focuses on establishing a strong rapport with the students. One example of this is how Mike is dedicated to the weekly meeting theme for RHA. Mike always goes all out and talks to other student leaders to learn how they are going to participate in the theme too. A few weeks ago during a particular theme meeting Mike came to the meeting dressed as Pikachu. Mike was excited to wear his costume and even went around to the other students to ask about their costumes. This shows his commitment to having fun but also getting to know the representatives. He used their names, asked questions, and talked about getting in-volved.

During this current academic year, Mike has worked on inspiring the executive board of RHA to think outside the box, be creative, and have fun. One way Mike did this was by giving an inspirational talk during training. His inspirational talk highlighted the kind of leader each student wanted to be based on their interests. He then gave them pictures of the Fairly Odd Par-ents television show pink blob character reference. These pictures were to remind students not to be come mindless gray blobs and to remember to be colorful, fun, exciting, and creative with their time at RHA. Normally, advisors might just mention the importance of being involved, but instead Mike focused on a specific way and example that students could think outside the box. His creativity was not lost on the students and they often bring up the pink blob reference.

Mike is a dedicated and caring individual who wants to do well as an advisor. He works hard and is always willing to support the students in person and in action. As his co-advisor, I am lucky to work with someone who is as committed and caring to RHA as he is. I hope you can see that he is not just a run of the mill advisor, but someone who has gone above and be-yond in numerous ways. Ways that I truly believe make him an excellent candidate for IRHA’s Advisor of the Year Award.

Dear IRHA:

I am pleased to provide this letter of support on behalf of Mike Mifflin, who is being nominated for

“Advisor of the Year” with the Illinois Residence Hall Association. As a career long advisor to residence hall organizations I feel

very comfortable in supporting Mike for this prestigious award.

I have known Mike for more than 2 years since he interviewed on our campus for a Complex Director (CD) in our residence life

program. CD’s are charged with a long list of duties - staff supervision, crisis response and facilities management just to name a

few. We also ask what additional duties they would be interested in having. In spite of a very busy schedule he eagerly expressed

interest in advising our Residence Hall Association. This is a major time commitment as you advise each member of the exec board

as well as working with the entire RHA general assembly. I would describe Mike as being “ALL IN”. He works very hard to con-

nect with the execs as well as members of the assembly. His enthusiasm is contagious. His advisor reports are full of humor and

excitement and the members have responded in a way that shows a great connection to their advisor. You find him at every RHA

event supporting and encouraging resident leadership. He is a great role model for the way an advisor should invest in their respon-

sibility.

On the IRHA front, Mike advised our delegation to semi’s last fall, providing the important support and encouragement that is criti-

cal to a delegations success. He also was a volunteer for IRHA 2017 – hosted at EIU earlier this year. No task is beneath Mike – if

it needs done – he jumps in and makes it happen - once again showing that he is “ALL IN”.

I addition to advising RHA he also advises the “Gamer Guild”, a recognized student organization focused on developing social

interaction opportunities for our students who find “gaming” a passion. This group can be a high risk for low connection to the

institution as they tend to isolate themselves. But thanks to Mike’s leadership they gather each week in a computer lab and make

important face to face connections that encourage their social integration with the campus.

Mike has discovered his passion – student development in Higher Education and we are lucky to have him on our team at Eastern

Illinois University. He is committed, excited and effective as an advisor and I would encourage you to give her every consideration.
