Advertising Techniques
Beauty Appeal
Celebrity Endorsement
Escape
In beauty appeal adverts pretty, well groomed people are used to make people believe that the product will transform them into an air brushed model. This is a good way for makeup to be sold.
Celebrities are used because if you like the celebrity advertising the product then you are more likely to buy the product.
Holiday adverts show luxury, quiet, hot places to make their company sound like a holiday of a lifetime. It advertises surreal conditions that will entice people to book with them.
Independence/Individuality
Intelligence
Lifestyle
Independence/ individuality adverts use ‘unusual’ images to bring across the idea that standing out in the crowd is good.
Lifestyle adverts show off the products in a way that makes the viewers believe that you cannot live without them.
Intelligence adverts use other products to their advantage and get straight to the point. They are usually simple but can sell their products. For example the advert to the left simply shows an image of a smart car and an image of a ‘smarter’ scooter. The point of the advert is to point out the major obvious point that the scooter is smarter than the car.
Nurture
Peer Approval
Rebel
These adverts are aimed at the fact that people are more likely to give to charity and help others if it is advertised and they see other people doing it. Nurture adverts sell the fact of looking after others, whether they are animals or humans, we should all help each other.
Peer approval sells the idea that if you use the product being shown then you will gain the approval of your peers.
Rebel adverts bring across the point that if you use their product then you will and can stand out and be whatever you want.
Rhetorical Question
Scientific / Statistical Claim
Unfinished Comparison / Claim
These adverts use venerable young children to make the viewers sympathize for them. They use rhetorical questions to leave viewers thinking.
These adverts use facts such as claiming that ‘doctors, dentists etc.. have recommended the product.Using these techniques make the product more reliable therefore easier to sell.
These adverts display their products to be better than everyone else’s however they have no actual back up for there claims. This way of advertising entices the viewers because they believe that they are getting a better deal than what they actually are.
