As much as the business owner hates to hear it, advertising is a long-term committment. Good lasting advertising is not quick results. It is a lasting courtship between the business and its prospective customers AND its current customers. Find a type of advertising the YOU believe in and can afford to run constantly (not consistently) but constantly. And stick with it. Do this and you will increase sales and keep the customers you currently have from jumping ship to someone else who is also advertising (asking) for their business.
