We the members of the Waltair club have a wonderful cluband we do enjoy the best of club life in India. Have youwondered about the "Club life" of the wealthy of the world? Here is a glimpse.

Denver-based Exclusive Resorts, a private membership clubfounded in 2002. Exclusive Resorts offers its 1,600 membersa portfolio of real estate valued at over $750 million, includinga chalet in the French Alps and five villas in Little Dix Bay inthe British Virgin Islands. Full membership runs $395,000 fora deposit, in addition to membership fees which can reach$30,000 per year.

If that sounds expensive, consider The Yellowstone Club, aprivate ski and golf community set on 14,000 acres in BigSky, Mont., which counts Microsoft founder Bill Gates as amember. The Yellowstone Club recently announced thelaunch of Yellowstone Club World Membership, amembership club which will offer access to about tenproperties worldwide, including a golf course in St. Andrew's,Scotland, two yachts and two Gulfstream jets. No word onwhether Gates is planning to join Yellowstone Club WorldMembership, which costs $2 million in upgrade fees forexisting Yellowstone Club members but starts at $4 millionfor non-members (although a company spokesman hints itcould climb as high as $10 million).

Cocktail trends

Chinese touch: At China Poblano,Cocktail Innovator Juan Coronadohas crafted a seasonal drink tocelebrate Chinese New Year (February10) featuring an unusual ingredient: beanpaste.

“The bean paste is a traditional ingredient in Asiandesserts. I’ve always been curious and challengedto include [it] into a cocktail,” Coronado says. “Itook a risk. The result is something that has adelicate booziness, a silky plum aroma and asurprising bean paste accent.” The plum blossomis the national flower of the Republic of Chinaand the first to bloom each winter, and itadorns costumes and props during ChineseNew Year festivities. Considering winter inChina can reach 10 degrees below zero, that’s one brave bud.

President A.H.N.Venkata Rao invited all the Past Presi-dents, Ladies and Members, staff and key note speakerof the day Padmasri Prof.K.Ramakrishna Rao garu to par-ticipate 64th Republic day function.

The President lauded the constitution of the country:binding together 28 states, 1618 languages, 6400 casts,6 major religions, 6 ethnic groups, 29 major festivals isas one country. Our is Democratic Country and is one ofthe best constitution in the world.

He invited Padmasri Prof.K.Ramakrishna Rao, Chancel-lor of Gitam University and one of the senior member ofour Club to deliver his key note address on this happyoccasion.

Quotes from the speech:

This was the day sixty three years ago that India becamea sovereign republic with its own constitution. It is a daywhen we may raise our heads high as people, free andproud. I say this because, despite many problems ofmultiple identities, different languages, religions, tradi-tions and regional disparities, we as citizens of India standunited as one people. We are a democratic nation andfreely elect our legislators. The legislative, judiciary andexecutive branches of Government coexist and functionsmoothly with mutual respect playing their appropriateroles as envisaged in the constitution. How many of ourneighbouring countries can boast of this? I asked a yearago one of my American friends, an internationally re-spected political scientist: "which is the most democraticnation in Asia and Africa?" He said without any hesita-tion "considering its past history and current size, I shouldsay, it is India."

Gandhiji's vision for India has four basic principles impliedin his concepts of swaraj, satya, sarvodaya, and swadeshi.Swaraj i~ freedom. Freedom for Gandhi is more than politi-cal freedom. It is freedom of the spirit. Freedom is to freeoneself from ignorance and falsehood, from bias and big-otry, from prejudice and possessiveness and from sensu-ous pleasure and self-interest. Freedom is to come face toface with truth.

Satya is truth. For Gandhiji truth is God. The Divine is withineach of us. It is what makes humans different from thebeasts. The human pursuit is to go beyond the ego to real-ize the true self. The ego colours and clouds the real selfand we become selfish. The goal is God-realization, whichis none other than self-realization.

Sarvodaya is the ethics of altruism. Altruist people exercisese1ffrestraint and are not actuated by self-interest. Altru-ism involves love and nonviolence in one's conduct. It con-sists in seeing our welfare in the wellness of others.

Swadeshi addresses the human predicament and the existential concerns. It asserts one's duty as a member of a com-munity and the value of socialloyaIty. The central thesis of swadeshi is that one who cannot help his own kith and kincannot hope to help the country and the world. One who does not value what is around him cannot value anything thatis truly valuable. This is indeed the rationale behind khadi and cottage industries, Panchayat Raj and decentralization.

We need economic policies that address the genuine needs and not the palpable greed of people. Our focus should beon the consumer and not consumption. The goal is not mass production but production for the masses and by themasses. We need to ensure that material abundance does not lead to moral decay and that they go together.

Our Republic Day is a day we reflect on these and similar matters. If each of us plays our due role as responsible citizensof this great country of ours, keeping in our perspective India of Gandhiji's dream, I believe we will eventually get there. The progress may be slow and the path may be tortuous in some places, but we will reach there.

THE PAGAL REGATTA

Calcutta Rowing Club has been celebrating this annualmadness methodically for a long time. A notice for ‘PujaPagal Regatta’ in the year 1935 was unearthed fromthe old Club records. When the City used to turn madwith ‘Durga Puja’ the expatriates of the Calcutta RowingClub experienced a different kind of madness- the‘Pagal Regatta’. It was a break from the tedious routinesof practice and regattas. This was an occasion to enjoywith light hearted rowing, funfare and above all the‘Pagal Night’.

6.15 am. I wasmaking my 'To Do'list for the day. Ir e m e m b e rr e a d i n gsomewhere that ifyou put "eatchocolate" at thetop of that list ofthings to do, thatway at least you'll getone thing done.Mmmm…CHOCOLATE ,something that Charms,Haunts, Oozes Calories, OftenLovingly, Always Tantalising andEnergising both mind and body, for me that is. I am a die-hard fanwho exercises little self controlwhen it comes to eating it.Anyway, leafing through theday's newspaper I came across anarticle on chocolate.

Info yes, but the most importantfact was that eating just 10 gmsof dark chocolate was enough toperk up blood circulation. Thatset me thinking…. the thought ofchocolate itself gets me going;imagine eating and feeling theblood rushing through the veinsthat much more faster. WOW! Iam all for it people….Yeah!

Everyone knows that chocolatecontains flavones and releasesserotonin that makes the eaterfeel very good about herself (andhopefully with those around too).I am using 'herself ' here asactually women tend to eat morechocolate than men, FYI. Thesecret is that it has an anti ageingeffect. We all want to look ourbest, so why not?

I am a confirmed chocoholicin more ways than one. I make'em and eat 'em. Love evenjust looking at 'em. Any

opportunity to learn,any interesting

recipe, I am notthe one tomiss. Just fort h o s ereading this,here is ad e l i c i o u s ,m o u t hwatering, rich

brownie recipethat is a family

favourite.

Dark Chocolate Brownie (darkchocolate is good 4 ur heart, remember)

Ingredients

170 gms. of darkchocolate(chopped), 170gms. butter, 1 cup maida, 1-1/2 cup sugar(I give it a whir inthe mixie), 3 large eggs and 1tsp. vanilla essence

Method

Place the butter and chocolate in adouble boiler or in a bowl set on topof a dish with simmering water. Stirgently to melt them evenly. Oncedone, turn off the heat and keep thebowl over the hot water to keep themix warm so that it is easy to workwith. Add the sugar and stir well.Lightly beat eggs and vanilla essencetogether and add in. Fold in until wellblended. It does take a couple ofminutes, don't worry. Now add themaida and mix well. You can addchopped nuts here if you wish(around 1/2 a cup). Pour the batterinto a buttered and floured pan andbake in a preheated oven for abouthalf an hour. Insert a toothpick tocheck if done. Cool, cut and eat....tellme if you like them.

Then he wished for a BIGCaaaR, and poof! There it was. Thenhe wished he could be irresistible toall women… poof! He turned into abox of chocolates.
