GULMARG : You can visit Gulmarg hill station which is in Jammu and Kashmir in North
India. If you want to spend some time in the lap of nature with your partner, the hill stations of
uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal, and Himachal Pradesh will be the best place for you to come. Here
you will come across some of the best landscapes. Also, this is not the only place to visit in north
India as this part is considered to be the Aladdin’s cave where you can find treasures of all sorts
of natural beauty. Patnitop Hill Station is the other place to go for honeymoon. This hill station
will not only take you closer to the best piece of natural beauty, but it will also provide you the
opportunities to spend some time in different adventurous activities.
DHARMASALA : Set against the backdrop of the
dramatic Dhauladhar Mountains the hill station of Dharamsala
is perched at the elevation ranges from 1,250 m to 2,000 m
above the sea level in the upper reaches of Kangra Valley in
Himachal Pradesh. The town is divided into two distinct and
widely separated sections Upper and Lower Dharamsala
differing by about 1000m in altitude. Today the hill station of
Dharamsala become popular on the world map as it is the seat
of His holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. It also houses a large
settlement of Tibetan refugee. The hill station of Dharamsala
also has number of monasteries and temples which serves as
a major tourist attraction. Even if the Tibetan community
dominates the town but it still retained its colonial lifestyle
and British fervors.
DARJEELING : This gem of a town,
a hill station set to the backdrop of the vestiges of
the British Raj, a favorite place in India.
The world famous Darjeeling tea dominates the area. The
way tea is enjoyed in Darjeeling is distinctly British. Bakeries
abound and with any cup of Darjeeling tea (black, green or
white) comes a hot bun, or a scone with Devonshire-like
cream on the side.
Happy Valley Tea Estate. It gives you tour of the process and
most memorably a break down of the pay scale. Older
women are expected to pick 4 kg a day, married women 6kg
a day and young, unmarried women, 8kg a day!

Our nation that is 1.2 billion strong
boasted of the fastest population growth
rate in the world. An honour of a different
kind. We may claim extraordinary fertility
but the culture of worshipping the cycle
of childbirth is embedded in our psyche.
The social dynamics of the baby's arrival
are pertinent.
When my youngest aunt was born , the
only "preparation" involved was to make
sure the room in the house that was
usually used by the midwife to conduct
the delivery was free and not "reserved"
by any other lady relative of the huge joint
family.
With at least 8 children in each family and
with seven families residing together in
one large compound, the arrival of a new
child hardly whipped up much
excitement. It wasnt even a question of
the new child being a boy or a girl. A child
was a child ( which was a good thing in
itself ) and maybe was just another
occasion for the whole clan to get
together with the ladies all decked up in
their seven stone diamond ear studs and
Kanjeevaram sari's and the men in their
silk dhoti's and angavastrams.
Clothes for the new baby were hand me
downs , the older siblings under the stern
eye of the, "stay at home mum" and the
numerous aunts took care of the child ,
the masseuse for the baby was one who
was almost a permanent employee in the
house and everything the baby was fed
was home made. No choices. Everything
followed a systematic tried and tested
formula so to speak.
Today, each new arrival ( which in itself
happens maybe once or twice at most in
family) is an Event in itself. Everything is
planned . I really envy generation today.
Why ? simply for the choices they have .
From the minute a mother-to-be knows
that she will be bringing a new life into
this world, the choosing game begins.
Invariably it begins with the name. Each
parent wants a name as unique as the
child itself. The new mum and dad Google,
Our babies!flip pages of religious texts , send out
emails to every one they know , take sly
looks at all kinds of registers.... all in the
hope of finding a name that sounds
unique, has a good meaning, cannot be
shortened to something the child will be
embarrassed to be called , easy to use
when reprimanding the child, will be easy
on foreign tongues ( if and when the child
goes abroad for further education) and
that can be easily fitted into the limited
boxes available for the name on
application forms.
This whole exercise does result in some
really nice names with all the above
mentioned qualifications . It atleast rules
out having two Sandhya's ( distinguished
as Pedda Sandhya and Chinna Sandhya ..
nothing to do with their respective sizes
but their ages ) two Ravi's ( Asha's Ravi
and Usha's Ravi ... Asha and Usha being
the respective wives ), two Usha's in the
same household ( Daughter Usha and
Daughter-in-law Usha , the two Usha's
distinct by their relationship with the
matriarch of the house ) , two Shanti's (
Arjun's Shanti and Bhaskar's Shanti , the
Shanti's being distinguished by their
respective husbands) . Now while we may
still have all these names within the
family, they dont vie with themselves.
Soon its time choose disposable diapers (
that don't need the wash , rinse , dettol
wash routine but just something that has
a dry top cover that will allow the baby
and mother to sleep through the night ).
Pediatricians (need not have treated the
baby's father and uncle before the baby
but one that has a good reputation, a
clean clinic and if possible a reference
from his / her good friend to cut through
the long wait time ) .
The working mom definitely needs help.
Her mom is around for 3 month but what
next? Nannys or maids are in high demand
. Although the Mother - Nanny
relationship is actually symbiotic , the
nanny always has an upper hand .( old ,
practiced hands may not work effectively
. Educated , neat , tech savvy maids are
what are needed these days to effectively
use the modern toys and devices like
microwaves and electric cookers or
answer cells phone and understand text
messages from the working mother ) .
Each stage of a baby's life is an unique
experience filled with unique issues. Not
many have the luxury of having family or
extended family to look after the child
while the parents are at work. Next, the
toddler needs a play school. Parents scout
around for the "best" play school or
nursery for the little prince or princess.
They need the security of knowing the
child is in a good environment as much as
possible.
Maids have long phone calls, TV serials
and neighbouring domestic help to
distract them. Play schools need to have
play areas, air conditioned class rooms, hi
tech teaching aids and a patient teacher .
It helps to make a choice if Asha's two year
old can recite the entire English alphabet
in one go by going to XYZ play school !!!
The years that follow have the same
pattern . Only the best will do . Even
though the father of the child may have
studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya himself and
worked hard there after to achieve the
success he has now, he wants his only
child to study in the ultimate posh school
in town . In his ambitious plans for his
child he may forget the importance of
hard work . Home made snacks are passe`
and the Pizza Hut / Domino's delivery boy
is the messiah from heaven. The every
evening gathering in the parks and
beaches make way for Laptops and online
friends and virtual gatherings. Children
"meet" their friends on the various social
networking sites.
College is again a matter of serious
discussion based on the aspirations of the
child. Donations sometimes help these
aspirations come true.
And thus goes forth
a young adult into
this world where
sometimes too many
choices is their
biggest problem.
