EK lounge access expandsEMIRATES is set to announce
an expansion of paid access to its global lounge network, with Gold and Platinum members of its Skywards program able to pay for access for additional travelling companions.
The move builds on the existing program that launched earlier this year at Dubai International Airport (TD 16 Jan) where four hours of access to the First Class lounges costs US$200, or US$100 for Business class.
EK wasn’t able to provide further details of the move to TD this morning, but according to an update of program rules for the Skywards loyalty scheme the top level members will pay US$100, or the equivalent in local currency, to have additional companions in the lounge.
The expanded scheme applies to all EK ports in Australia and NZ including its lounges in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland, as well as Emirates lounges in the UK (Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, London Heathrow and Gatwick); Europe (Dusseldorf, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan & Zurich); South Africa (Cape Town and Johannesburg); the USA (San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York JFK); Delhi; Kuala Lumpur; and Tokyo.
The US$100 fee applies to one-time access per adult, for a 4 hour maximum stay in the lounge.
Children under 12 can also access the lounges at half price.

QF start-up project debutsQANTAS has partnered with
corporate accelerator program Slingshot to launch the Avro Accelerator for start-ups.
Avro Accelerator aims to give newly established businesses the foot up, working with the Qantas Group mentors and pitch ideas to streamline the travel experience, design smarter ways of working and unlock the potential of new technologies and more.
QF Group ceo Alan Joyce said the 12-week program would offer up to 10 teams an opportunity for “smart business thinkers to shape the future of travel”.
Named after Qantas’ first ever aircraft, the Avro 504K, the initiative builds on the airline’s foray into high-speed wi-fi, new
digital and mobile tools, and “disruptive ventures” in sectors including health insurance and financial services.
Start-up program participants will receive up to $150,000 of funding from the Slingshot Venture Fund, with applications closing 27 Apr - more HERE.
MEANWHILE, customers flying on Qantas domestic routes on its Boeing 737s fitted with new wi-fi tech will be able to view video streaming service Stan.
Passengers will have access to Stan’s entire catalogue of content, with access for three months included in the fare cost.
Stan joins Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify as content partners (TD 15 Feb) from mid-Apr.
Qantas said it was continuing to “test and tweak” its wi-fi solution which will offer speeds of up to 10 times faster than conventional onboard wi-fi services.
“We know there’s still more fine-tuning for us to do. That’s why we’re deliberately waiting about six months before rolling it out to the rest of our domestic A330 and B737 aircraft,” QF said.

IAG’s long-haul LCC solution
THE parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling has unveiled its solution to counter competition on long-haul routes from low-cost carriers.
On Fri, International Airlines Group revealed its mooted budget offshoot (TD 09 Mar) will be called LEVEL and debut in Jun.
LEVEL will initially launch with two brand new Airbus A330s fitted out with 293 Economy class and 21 Premium Economy seats, operated by Iberia’s flight and cabin crew.
Picking Barcelona as its first European hub, LEVEL will fly to Los Angeles, San Francisco (Oakland), Buenos Aires and Punta Cana,
with fares from US$150 one way. Economy fares exclude luggage,
meals, seat selection and in-flight entertainment (all available in the cost of Premium Economy fares).
Customers will be able to earn & redeem points with Avios, the loyalty scheme of IAG’s airlines.
IAG chief Willie Walsh said LEVEL would “bring a stylish and modern approach to flying at prices that are even more affordable. It will benefit having the strength of one of the world’s largest airline groups behind it”.
Flights to LAX & PUJ will operate twice weekly and thrice weekly to OAK and EZE.

SunStone ship orderFLORIDA-BASED SunStone
Ships has signed a framework agreement with China Merchants Industry Holdings to build four Polar Class expedition vessels and options for an additional six.
The 104 metre long ships will accommodate between 80-95 passengers & will be chartered to new and existing clients.
SunStone already operates a fleet of 10 small cruise vessels which it charters.
The new vessels will be developed by Norway firm Ulstein Design & Solutions and Finnish company, Mäkinen.
An artist’s impression of what the new ships will look like is pictured below.
A CANADIAN man who infiltrated Calgary airspace in a chair rigged with 100 helium balloons has been fined more than $25,000 for his stunt.
Daniel Boria, 27, was dubbed the ‘Balloonatic’ by Canadian media in 2015 after breaching controlled airspace at an altitude of 14,000 feet.
Boria faced court on Fri and paraphrased John F Kennedy, saying “I chose to fly a chair, not because it is easy but because it is hard.”
Judge Bruce Fraser saw it differently, calling the stunt “unconscionably stupid”.
Boria had reportedly planned to parachute into the Calgary Stampede but was thwarted by unfavourable winds and forced to land elsewhere.

LATAM back to profitLATAM Airlines Group posted
a net income of US$69.2 million in 2016, the carrier’s first profit since it was formed by the merger of LAN and TAM in 2012.
The result follows a net loss of US$219.3m last year and comes despite difficult trading conditions in South America.
“The year 2016 was challenging for LATAM, with weakening regional economies and recession in Brazil, devalued local currencies and high inflation rates in certain countries,” the airline said in releasing its results.
“In this context, LATAM continues to be the best positioned airline group in Latin America to respond to these deteriorated conditions,” it said.
Operating income was US$568 million during 2016, an increase of 10.5% on the previous year.
The company also reduced its fleet during 2016 as part of a plan to cut its hardware assets by $US2 billion by 2018.
CHINA Southern Airlines hosted eight Helloworld agents on a trip to Paris and Amsterdam recently, giving them a chance to explore Guangzhou on a stopover.

The group (pictured) included Denise Poder, Launceston Travel & Cruise; Lisa Ioakimidis, helloworld (HLO) Lower Templestowe; Kate Ferguson, Travelcall; Vashna Verma, Reho
Travel; Sue Carlyon, HLO Portland; Helena Jamieson Sanford Travel; Liora Sarif, Sabra Travel; Narelle Grausam, HLO Emu Plains; Nancy Lan-Huang and Lucas Perez, China Southern; and HLO business manager Matt Wood.

Goldie Integrated resort design
THE Gold Coast Integrated Resort is set to cater to the region’s active lifestyle, featuring public mooring and room for family-friendly activities.
Lead developer ASF Consortium has unveiled the latest design, detailing the public space, entertainment and leisure experiences which feature a 9,200m2 waterfront square and 20,000m2 of rooftop terraces and gardens, boardwalks, skywalks, parks and beaches.
Attractions which have been packed into the plan include a 1,200 seat amphitheatre, ballroom, a medi-spa and health and day spa, jetties and piers, shopping arcades and waterfront markets, along with restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Gold Coast Integrated Resort architect Michael Rayner, of Blight Rayner Architecture said the amount of public offerings were achieved by increasing the heights of the buildings.
“The existing three storey height limit was appropriate for its time but can only result in privatised resorts with limited public
accessibility such as already exists on The Spit,” he said.
ASF Development director Dean LaVigne said “height and scale are required to attract tourists, generate critical mass onsite, and deliver the revenue required to create high quality public spaces and free attractions for all ages and nationalities to enjoy”.
The proposal includes buildings of three storeys, up to 20 and 45 storeys - CLICK HERE for more.
Amadeus instant dataAMADEUS has launched a
new product under the Amadeus Agency Insight Suite, called Productivity Tracker.
The tool uses data analytics to identify areas for operational improvement, so agencies can make more effective decisions.
Agencies can detect process inefficiencies with Productivity Tracker and take corrective action and run reports to show what contributes the most to overall booking and revenue, allowing them to better determine where to allocate resources.
Pascal Clement head of travel intelligence, Amadeus said agencies must adapt to the rapidly changing industry.
“Productivity Tracker enables agencies of all sizes to do this by providing them with actionable insights on their performance, which they can then use to sharpen their business processes and strengthen their position in a competitive market,” he said.
