1 November 2016 TAKE SANCTUARY IN THE MAGALIES MOUNTAINS The spectacular Mountain Sanctuary Park, located in the majesc Magalies Mountains, has been open to the the public for close on 40 years. It has earned its well-deserved reputa- on of being one of the quietest, most peaceful places in South Africa. The park offers many outdoor acvies for day and overnight visitors alike and boasts a rich variety of animals, birds and creatures - all indigenous to the Magaliesberg. Klipspringers, monkeys, jackal, warthog and so much more can be found in and around the camp, as well as remarkable flora, bird and buerfly life, making the sanctuary an incredible experience for bird watches, botanists and hikers. Mountain Sanctuary Park is not only the perfect dayme getaway, but also offers spectacular three-star accommodaon, including inmate chalets and stunning log cabins, some of which are on slts overlooking the valley and others that are privately nestled into the reserve. Day visitors are welcome in the reserve every day of the week, provided there is space. Book- ings are essenal. Guests are welcome to bring a picnic or make use of the limited braai facility at the pool area. A lapa is available for hire, for funcons and team-building events or a small outdoor conference. Essenally a hiking reserve, trails range from 15 minutes to eight hours. Hikers have the free- dom of the land and are able to explore more than 1 000 hectares at their leisure. A crystal clear mountain pool is the ideal spot to cool down aſter a long hike. The park also features several mountain bike routes, but be warned, the routes are 12 km in total and are very ad- venturous and technical. The Magaliesberg has a wide variety of dirt roads, ranging from easy terrain (such as the Barnardsvlei Road) to the physically demanding Breed’s Neck Mountain Pass, which rises from an altude of 1360 m in the north, to 1670 m at the crest before drop- ping down to 1440 m. For those with a head for heights there are a number of climbs on the property (bring your own kit). Nothing is bolted, so you need to be a tradional climber. Although abseiling is not offered as a guided adventure, there are many rock faces where you can test your skills. Wine list launch at Fisherman’s DeckSELF-CATERING COTTAGES - B&B

Bookings 082-454 0095 or [email protected].

There is a new kid on the restaurant block in Hartbeespoort and everyone is invited to relax, kick back and enjoy good food and drinks. Fisherman’s Deck is situated in the heart of Hartbeespoort just off the R511, surrounded by pristine mountains and offering views of one of the beautiful dams on the premises where you can enjoy the rich bird life and eco-system. With a motto that reads, come as a client and leave as a friend, the restaurant has built up a reputation for itself for offering good quality multi-cuisine, entertainment for the whole family and a lively vibe in the few months since it has opened its doors. The restaurant offers three seating areas that can accommodate about 320 guests. You have a choice between a rustic main seating

area, a wooden deck and a cigar and cocktail lounge inside a lapa. Likewise, there are three bars. The main bar is supplemented by a cocktail bar in the cigar lounge area and a juice and milkshake bar. Catering for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu consists of firm favourites such as Eisbeins, pork ribs, gourmet ground beef burgers and beautiful pizzas. And with a name like Fisherman’s Deck of course fish has to be on the menu and comes highly recommended. Wash the grub down with a variety of draughts, good wine and speciality cocktails. As a family-friendly establishment, Fisherman’s Deck caters for the young ones with fishing and ball pits to name a few

activities. Children may also run around under supervision. There is a swimming pool, speed park and jumping castle with a qualified teacher who looks after the children. Fisherman’s Deck offers regular specials and live entertainment. The restaurant is on the same premises as Hartbeespoort Fisheries. Boasting an authentic history linked to old Transvaal President Paul Kruger, co-owners Casper Kruger and Casper junior are carrying on the legacy on land that has been in Kruger hands for many years, with their third partner, Lindie Nel. Join its Facebook page to stay informed of specials and entertainment offered. For more information, contact 082 749 6243 or [email protected].

hArTbEESPoorT’S rich hiSTorY: whErE A grEAT mAn LivEd And diEdOn the road to the Villa d’ Afrique estate in Broederstroom, a lone memorial stone in the veld pays sad homage to one of South Africa’s most famous writers and poets, Eugéne Marais. It is the exact spot where this poet, philoso-pher, journalist, lawyer and scientist tragically committed suicide on 29 March 1936.At the time Marais was 65-years-old, single and living in the rondavel-house of his friend, Gustav Preller. He had been addicted to morphine for 40 years, forever trying to escape from its power. On high levels of inner experi-ence, intellectual insight and creativity when using morphine, he suffered from withdrawal symptoms and severe depression when going without it. On 28 March 1936 Marais wrote a letter to Chris Roos (who lived nearby and owned a car), telling him that he had suddenly become seriously ill and as he needed “medicine”, he asked Roos to drive him to town, offer-ing to pay for the journey. He urged Roos to come soon and signed the letter as his friend, Eugéne Marais. A messenger took the letter

On 6 November 1961 the Atomic Energy Board, on whose site it then was, put up a memorial stone on the exact spot of Roos’ cairn, indicated as such by R Mulder. On the plate it reads:

IN MEMORY OF EUGéNE MARAIS WHO DIED ON THIS SPOTAT 11:00 ON 29 MARCH 1936

At the request of ASSOCIATION OF AFRIKAANS WRITERS AND READERS FOR CULTURALENHANCEMENT

Erected by ATOMIC ENERGY BOARD6 November 1981

to Roos, who replied that he could not help Marais because the roads were in a very bad condition after the rains. This was the end of the road for Eugéne

Marais. The next morning, which was rainy and misty, he walked more or less two kilometres through the veld to the house of Lood Pre-torius and knocked on the door. When Preto-rius opened it, he saw Marais standing there, drenched with rain. According to Pretorius, Marais asked for a gun with which he wanted to kill a snake that he had seen up at the rondavels. Pretorius persuaded him to use the shot-gun. At about 11:00,

under a tree some hundred yards from Preto-rius’ back door, he shot himself. The first shot did not kill him. He had to fire a second shot. A woman, Maria Mofamere, allegedly found

the body the next day and informed Pretorius. He reported later on that he had heard a shot, but never suspected anything. Chris Roos stacked up some stones to cover the blood.Eugéne Nielen Marais was buried in the (he-roes part) of the old Pretoria cemetery.

spice up your year-end function

5October 2016

WEEKENDER

As the year draws to a close, company owners start to think about possible year-end function venues and themes. Tired of the same old, same old like Fire & Ice, Alice in Wonderland, Hawaii, End-of-the-World, Super Heroes or the Oscars? Consider these novel ideas for a year-end function with a difference that will not be forgotten by the next day. Wine or craft beer tasting For this, you will need a venue with a histori-cal setting, a view, a lovely garden and plenty of footpaths and seating space, or you can just go with a garden cottage setting with the wines and beers elegantly displayed. You can rent a craft brew set for the day or have a wine expert come and talk about 15 of the top South African wines. Lunch or dinner can fol-low, but for this type of event, we recommend also renting a coach or arranging for transport afterwards. Comedy club Don’t laugh at the idea. If the budget allows or you know a good stand-up comedian, you can have great fun and entertain your corporate crew. You can even book the services of two or three comedians while employees and clients enjoy dinner. With this type of event, you can be sure to have all the employees forget about sales targets and project delays for one night!

ingrid kolzing exhibits

7November 2016

WEEKENDER

Well-known water colourist Ingrid Kolzing is hosting her annual exhibition, Tales of Trees and Other Silent Accounts, at her studio in Schoemansville from 4 to 6 November. This year’s exhibition comprises of a blend of tree impressions and wordless communication. “We have been having many quiet moments in our house this year, with my husband’s loss of speech after a stroke. We move through the frustration of it, to a stronger bond of feeling and caring. What strange roads life takes. Roads one would not always choose oneself, but still there is a choice in dealing with the cards dealt,” says Ingrid. Interacting with nature moves her and makes her feel alive. “I need to portray this. Walking through bush in-between the trees I feel the trees’ pres-ence like a quiet, breathless moment. I cannot help but respond to it. Add to it bird song and a light breeze, the smell of the veld and my heart sings out. I am acutely aware of my

blessings. The amazing differences in texture, leaves, thorns, shapes and colours keep my in-terest. These spreading havens for man, beast, birds and insects.“Life has lost many of its trimmings for me. We live more focused. Things that were terribly important just aren’t anymore. The shades, the hues, the nuances of life have be-come clearer. When one becomes quiet, one can listen. Whatever is in me, will come out in my painting. Whatever touches me - what I see, what I experience, become the themes of my paintings. At the end it is the sharing of the joy of a sunlit clearing, to celebrate the little havens of precious moments, inviting the viewer to discover the wordless message of the painting. To celebrate the often discreet nuances of the blessings around us we only need to become aware of.” Gallery hours are from 09:00 to 16:40 at 94 Van Velden Street, Schoemansville.
