Adventure BackgroundTheEtherealPlaneishometomanystrange

creatures,aswellasthedreamsofmortals.BeingsmadeofpurethoughtinhabitthedeepestreachesoftheEtherealPlane,normallysofarfromotherplanesthattheyneverevenmeetmaterialbeings…normally.InthedepthsoftheWebmossWoodsliesasitewherethedyingthoughtsofancientsacrificialvictimsplungedfardeeperintotheEtherealintheirdyingmoments,leavingapsychictrailbacktothatspot.Aftercenturies,oneofthesecreaturesofpurethoughtfollowedthetrailand,forthefirsttime,discoveredtheMaterialPlane.

Theentitywasfascinatedbywhatitsaw:creaturesofallsorts,noneofwhichcouldcommunicatemindtomindbutwereamusingnonethelessastheyskitteredaroundinunpredictableways.Thispresenceprojecteditsthoughtsatthenearestcreature,willingittomove,butwasignored.Frustrated,itmovedcloser,untilatlastitsmindslippedintotheprimitivebrainofthecreature.Shockedathowlittleactualthoughtwasthere,theentityquicklyoverrodetheinstinctualthoughtsofthecreatureandwasabletocontrolitseverymovementandaction.Thebeingofthoughtabsorbedtheknowledgeoftheprimitivecreatureandthedetailsoftheworldaroundit,gaininganunderstandingofhowthiscollectionofmeatandfluidslived,hunted,andevenprocreatedtocreateanewgenerationofcreatureslikeit.

Afterthenoveltyofcontrollingitspuppetworeoff,theentityrealizedhowmuchthephysicalworldofferedintermsofentertainmentandsensation,both

ofwhichweresorelylackingtoabeingwithnophysicalexistence.However,asolepuppetforitsconsciousnesssoonprovednotenoughtotakeinwhatthematerialworldhadtooffer.Thememeticlifeformprobedforthfromitshost,reachingitsmentaltendrilsintothemindofthenextclosestcreatureandfoundthatwithitsnewknowledgeoftheseprimitivebrains,itcouldextendanadditionalmentalstrandtoanotherandinfluenceitsactionsaswell.Fromthehostcreatures,itlearnedofthewebstheymadetoensnarepreyandmadeaweb-likenetworkofitsown,spanningacrossitshosts.Withitssuperiormindguidingtheforceofcreatures,itcreatedaasortofhivemindthatdrovethemtoobeyitswhimsandexploredbeyondthebordersoftheforestithaddiscovered.

Thememeticentitysentscoutsoutandlearnedthatitonlycouldattachcreaturestoitshivemindiftheyeffectivelyhadnomindwhatsoever,butitcouldmentallyeavesdroponmoresophisticatedmindsthroughitspuppetsandlearnfromthemaswell.Thecreatureofthoughtsoonlearnedthattherewasavillageofhumanoidsnearbyandthattheyfearedtheetherealentity’sthrallsthespidersnativetotheWebmossWoods.Itevenlearnedthatsomeverminnaturallycreatedahivemindoftheirown,guidingtheiractionsasagroup.Ifvermincouldmaketheirownhiveminds,thensurelyithadcreatedsomethinggreater,moresignificant.Itgaveitselfanamebasedonthisrealization:theGrandHive.

Frustratedthatitstillcouldnotdirectlycontrolmoreadvancedanimals,muchlessthemoreadvancedhumanoids,theGrandHivedecideditwouldcontrol

themthroughtheproxiesofitsspiderarmy.Itsentitssentriestoattackthenearbyhumanoidsandtobringbackspecimensforfurtherstudy.Intime,theGrandHivewascertainitcoulddiscoverhowtobringthemunderitsmentalcontrolaswell.

Adventure SummaryTheadventurebeginsshortlyaftertheGrandHive’s

spidershaveattackedthehamletofMossdale.Theadventurersarriveintownanddiscoveritisoverrunwithgiantspiders.Manyofthecitizensaredead,abducted,orcocoonedinwebs.TheadventurersarelikelyinMossdaletoprocureitsonlysignificantexport,thesuperiorwebsilkcreatedbyIvandelFiskarton,thelocalalchemist.Alternatively,theycouldberesidentsofMossdale,returningfromatriptothenearesttowntobuyequipmentnotforsaleathome.Fortunatelyforthem,themajorityofthespidersfromtheattackhavereturnedtothewoods,butseveralremainandmustbedefeatedtosafelyexplorethetown.AftertheadventurersdiscoverthatIvandelisamongtheabducted,hisapprenticebegsthemtoentertheWebmossWoods,rescuetheabductedvillagers,andstopwhateverisdrivingthelocalspiderstoorganizeandattack.

Onceinthewoods,theadventurersmustlocatethelairoftheGrandHive.Sincethespidersoftentravelinthecanopyoftrees,standardtrackingprovesfruitlessbutwillleadtheadventurerstoseveralotherresidentsofthewoods.Inadditiontoseveralfalseleadsofusualsuspectsthatcontrolspiders,suchasanettercapandmites,theyhavetheopportunitytomeetalocaldruidandawererathunter—bothofwhomcanhelptheadventurers,justnotinthewaystheymightexpect.

Theadventurersfinallylocatetheruinedshrineinanancientcircleofdolmensandfinditoverrunbybothundeadandanestofspiders.InthecenteroftheruinisthegiantassassinspidertheGrandHiveusesasitspersonalpuppet.Whentheyconfrontthesourceofthespiderinvasion,theylearnthatthestrangeentitycontrollingthemisgrowinginpowerandhopestoturnmoreadvancedcreaturesintoitsthralls,startingwiththeadventurers.KillingtheassassinspiderbreakstheGrandHive’sconnectiontotheMaterialPlaneandcastsitbacktothedepthsoftheEthereal.Afterwards,theadventurersfindIvandelcocoonedandweakenedbyvenombutstillalive,alongwithseveralothervillagers.

Thisadventureisdesignedforapartyoffour1st-leveladventurers.UsingtheMediumexperienceprogression,theyshouldbe2ndlevelbytheadventure’send.

Along Came a Spider

Part 1: MossdaleMossdaleisatinyhamletattheedgeoftheWebmoss

Woods.Theforestisoverrunwithenoughdangerousverminthatmostpeopleavoidit,limitingthesizeofthetown.Thesmalltown’smainstayoftradeistheunusualsubstancewhichgivesthenearbyforestitsname.Webmossisauniqueblendofmaterials,ahangingplantinfusedwithspidersilk.Theplantabsorbssomeoftheabundantspiderwebbingwhichthelocalvermindrapeonmanyofthetrees,formingasubstancethatisstrongerthansilkandjustaspliable.

TheadventurershavelikelybeenhiredtoprocureashipmentofwebmossfromIvandelFiskarton,alocalalchemistandexporteroffinewebmossgoods.

1A. Village Green (CR 1)This clearing is surrounded by a dozen houses with a single dirt track leading south. A weathered granite spur thrusts from the center of the clearing. The rock and the houses are covered with layers of webbing. The only motion is from a gentle breeze rustling a few fallen leaves.

Thespurisancientandhasstoodhereforcenturies,longbeforeMossdalewasfounded.ADC10Knowledge(history)checkcanconfirmthatstandingstoneslikethisintheregionwereusedbytheDrothicbarbariantribesthatonceroamedthearea,morethan800yearsago.

Monsters:Twogiantcrabspiderslurkontopofthestandingstone.Ifanycreaturesapproach,theyleapdowntoattack.

1B. Trapper’s House (CR 1)The interior of this house contains simple wooden furniture: a bed, a table, and two chairs. A half-skinned beaver sits upon a workbench, with tools scattered nearby.

HelmutRoskanlivedhere,trappinganimalsinthenearbywoodsfortheirpeltsandmeat.Whenthevillagewasattackedbyspiders,hewastakenbysurprisewhileskinninghislatestcatch.ThespiderscocoonedhiminwebbingbeforereturningtotheGrandHive.

Monsters:Fourscarletspidershideinscatteredlocationsaroundthehut,patientlyawaitingprey.Ifacreatureapproachestheworkbenchoranyofthefurniture,thespidersmovetoattack.Otherwise,theyuseStealthtomoveintoasquareadjacenttotheclosestfoeandattack.

1C. Alchemist’s House (CR 3)This hut is larger than any other in the village, and every available space inside is crammed with tables and benches covered with alchemical equipment. Many beakers and flasks sit over open flames and contain bubbling liquids, while racks along the wall boast containers filled with an array of colored liquids. Hanging from the ceiling are several coils of rope.

ThisisIvandelFiskarton’slabandhome.Whenthespidersattacked,hewascaughtoff-guardand

unwillingtothrowabombinsidehishomeduetothemultitudeofvolatilesubstances.Heswiftlysuccumbedtothespiders’venomousbitesandwasbroughtbacktotheGrandHivealongwiththeotherprisoners.Heputupenoughofafighttogivehisapprentice,Dorrin,achancetohideunderaworkbench.Dorrin(malehumanexpert1,3hp)stayedhiddenevenafterthemainforceofspidersleftthetownandhasavoideddetectionbythetwospiderswhohavesincetakenupresidenceintheworkshop.

Monster:Twogiantspidershavespunawebacrossthe15-foot-highceiling,camouflagedamongtheropeshangingthere.Theywaituntiltheadventurershaveenteredtheroom,andthenonespidercreatesasheetofwebbingblockingthedoorofthehutwhiletheotherattemptstoentrapanadventurerinmorewebbing.Theythenlowerthemselvesonwebsandattackfromhigherground,gaininga+1bonustoattacksonadventurerswhoremainatgroundlevel.

Development:Adventurerscangrabaflaskorbeakerintheroomandthrowitasastandardaction.Thereisa50%chancethatthesubstanceisinert,andtheglasswaresimplyshattersfor1d2damageifithits.Otherwise,themissileactsasaflaskofacid.Iftheadventurersthrowcontainersfromtheracksonthewalls,theyrandomlyselectoneofthealchemicalitemsorpotionslistedundertreasure,whichhavetheirusualeffects.

Anadventurerwhoclimbsorjumpsupontoatablecanavoidgrantingthespiderstheiradvantageforhigherground,butthereisa50%chanceeachroundspentonatabletoknockoveravialofdangeroussubstance,causingtheadventurertosuffer1d6aciddamage(aDC12Reflexsavenegatesthisdamage).

AnycombatintheroomcausesDorrintoscreaminterror.Iftheadventurersarehavingahardtimewiththefight,oneofthespiderscanattackDorrininsteadofanadventurer.IfDorrinsurvives,herelatestheeventsofthespiderattackonthetownandthathismasterwastakenalive,althoughpoisoned,alongwithseveralothervillagers.HeofferstheadventurersallofthealchemicalitemsandpotionsinthelabiftheyagreetotrytorescueIvandel.Dorrindoesn’thaveanyideawhythespidersattackedinforce,astheyusuallyavoidthevillage,buthecantelltheadventurersthattheyscuttledofftothenortheast.

1D. Dogged Resistance (CR 1)This unremarkable hut has simple furniture and is covered floor to ceiling in webs. A mound cocooned in webbing twitches feebly on the far side of the room.

Monster:Aswarmofspidershasslowlybeenfeedingonadogtrappedinwebbinginthishouse.However,theyhappilymovetowardsmoremobilepreyiftheadventurersenterthishut.Theywillnotpursuecreaturesoutsideofthehut,preferringtostaywiththeircaptivemeal.

Development:Thismastiffhasbeenreducedto2Strengthduetospidervenomandisunabletofree

itselffromthewebs.Itcurrentlyhas3hpbutotherwisehasthestatisticsofaridingdog.Iftheadventurersrescueitfromthespiderswarmandnurseitbacktohealth,itwillbecomefiercelyloyaltowhicheveradventurerspentthemosttimecaringforitandwillprotectthemwithitslife.

1E. Empty HousesThis small one-room house seems deserted, save for the spiderwebs coating most of the simple furniture.

Eachofthesestructureshousedafamily,allofwhomwereeitherkilledbyspidersduringtheattackorabductedafterwards.Halfofthesehousescontain1d3+1dessicatedcorpsescocoonedinwebbing.Therestshowobvioussignsofstrugglebutcontainsnobodies.

Part 2: The WebwoodsSpidersofboththeregularandmonstrousvarieties

havealwaysinfestedtheWebwoods.Althoughdangeroustoanimalsandpeopleexploringthewoods,thearachnidstypicallypresentnomoreofathreattoMossdalethananyotherwildpredator.TheWebwoodstaketheirnamefromtheprolifichabitatsofthelocal

spiders.Everytreecontainsatleastonelargeweb,andmanyarecompletelydrapedinwebbing.Overtime,thelocalflorahasadaptedtogrowinthewebs,includingaspeciesofvinewithanintegratedrootsystemthatformsintorope-likestructureswhichhangfromtheweb-coveredbranchesdowntotheground.Alchemistsrefinethismaterial,calledwebmoss,tomakeexceptionallylightandstrongropesandtextilesthatretainthegray-greencolorofthevine.

TheblanketingcanopyoftheWebwoodsleavestheforestfloorunusuallyclearofplantlifeordeadtreedebris;only10%ofthesquaresinthewoodsarecoveredinlightundergrowth.ThehangingwebmosscanbescaledtoreachthecanopyleveloftheWebwoodswithaDC15Climbchecksolongastheclimberiswithin10feetofatree.Thethickcanopyalsoblocksmostnaturalsunlightfromreachingtheforestfloor,resultinginonlydimlighteveninthemiddleoftheday.Every4hoursexploringorevery8hourscampingintheWebwoodsyieldsa20%chanceofarandomencounterwithagiantspiderB1.

TheadventurerswillneedtoexploretheWebwoodstofindtheabductedcitizensofMossdale.Priortoleavingthevillage,Dorrinmayhavetoldthemthatthespiderscamefromthenortheast,whichpointsthemintherightdirectiontofindtheirquarry.Alternatively,anadventurerwhomakesaDC15Survivalchecktotrackthespiderscanfollowtheirtrailintothewoodsforamile;thetracksendabruptlywherethespiderstooktothetreesfortheremainderoftheirtrip.Iftheadventurersrescuethedogfromarea1D,itcanautomaticallytrackthespidersthisfar,followingthescentofitsformermaster.ADC12Knowledge(local)orKnowledge(geography)checkinformstheadventurersthatbothanettercapandafewbandsofmiteslivetothenortheastofMossdale,andbothareknownforkeepingtrainedmonstrousspidersaspetsorcompanions.

2A. A Rat In The Woods (CR 2)The woods ahead are covered in sticky sheets of webbing. The corpses of dire rats hang in several of the webs, their faces contorted in pain. The bodies of three spiders the size of men litter the clearing as well.

Thespiderskilledthesedireratsbeforetheirlycanthropiccompanion,Conrad,slaughteredthespidersinturn.

Monster:ThewereratConradAndonhaslivedintheWebwoodsforyears,avoidingtheindigenousspidersandthevillageofMossdaleandpreyingonisolatedtravelerstosupplementhismeagerincomefromhuntingandtanningpelts.HeknowstherecentupheavalinthewoodswillimpacthislivelihoodasmuchasMossdale’s,andwhilehewouldnormallybemorethanhappytoambushtheadventurers,hemayinsteaddecidetoencouragethemtodealwiththethreattohishomesothathecancontinuehislifeofcasualbanditrywithoutthelocalspidersrampagingandkillingoffbothhisratfriendsandhispotentialprey.

Conradwasunharmedduringthespiderambush,havingtransformedintohishybridformbeforethespiderscouldinjurehim.Whentheadventurersapproach,heisinhybridformandobviouslyawererat,

Monster:AfterherparentswerekilledbyspidersintheWebwoods,ElinawasadoptedbyalocalhermitwholivedontheperipheryofMossdale.Shegrewtoresentthecallousnatureofthevillagers,whoalwaysgaveherandheradoptivefatherawaryeyefortheirchoiceoflivingamongthespidersinthewilderness.Shecametobelievethatspiderslivedanexemplarylifeasefficientpredatorswhocoollyignoresocialization.Whenherfatherbecameill,sheofferedhimtooneofthegiantverminasameal,simultaneouslyputtinghimoutofhismiseryandbondingwiththespider.ElinaseestherecentuprisingofthespidersoftheWebwoodasasignoftheirinnatesuperioritytothehumanswhooccasionallyinvadetheirterritory.
