A MESSAGE FROM OUR
Advent Voice
In my annual meeting report I indicated that through reflections of the past year it has truly been a privilege to serve as your Council President. I wanted to reiterate this message for while it has been a challenging year because of our transition journey, it has also been deeply satisfying and provided opportunities to get to know and work with many of you that I might not otherwise have had. I also want to recognize our dedicated, thoughtful and committed council members that have served faithfully this past year. They have unselfishly given their time, energy, and wisdom to the governance of Advent, as have all the ministry leaders and volunteers. Please join with me in saying THANK YOU!
As the 2012 Council year draws to an end, I want to again say a special thank you to Carolyn Johnson, Vice President and Fellowship Liaison, Bob Walters, Secretary and Outreach Liaison and Laurie Dahms, Social Justice Liaison as they leave the Council. During the year we also had two council members leave their positions due to expanded work and family obligations. They were Irene Bizier, Social Justice Liaison and Jeff Vaa, Finance and Stewardship Liaison. Thank you Carolyn, Bob, Laurie, Irene and Jeff! It was truly a privilege to serve with you. On Sunday, January 27, seventy six members and a number of Advent friends gathered in the Fellowship Hall for the annual meeting.
Meeting Minutes: The minutes of the January 29, 2012 Annual Meeting were approved as were the September 30, 2012 minutes of the Special Congregational Meeting. 2013 Budget: On behalf of Treasurer Jeff Case, who was out of town the 2012 Budget recap and 2013 proposed budget was presented by Chuck Christensen, Finance and Stewardship Liaison. Following this report is a brief overview of the 2013 budget adopted through the three tier development process. The second column represents the actual budget adopted. Council Elections: New members were elected to fill the one year and the three-three year terms. Chuck
A message from your Council President with an Annual Meeting and Council Update:
Sometimes the things that come together in prayer seem odd traveling companions. Two odd companions come together today: the verse which is literally at the center of all the readings for Lent, John 3:16, and the image from the Velveteen Rabbit of love’s power to make one real.
An element of our worship in Lent is about becoming real. During our worship, we take stock of what we do and what we fail to do as God’s people. We tell the truth to God about ourselves, not because God needs to hear it but because we need to tell it. Years ago, we called it “getting real.”
But that alone doesn’t make us into the full reality of God’s intention for us…That comes through the incarnation of Stark, Transforming Love. Love without pretenses. Love without looking good.
It was the power of the little boys love that make the Velveteen Rabbit real. It didn’t leave him perfect. Michael Hague describes a rumpled, worn, wiskerless rabbit.
The path of God’s love with us isn’t warm, soft, comfortable or cute. The path of Incarnate Love with us this season begins in ashes and seems to end in the shadows of growing darkness on Good Friday. It’s not a pretty love. It is what give us real life.
Pastor Karen L. Hanson
Odd Traveling Companions
February 2013 3 Christensen was reelected for an additional one year term and Gail Kautzman, Jan McWherter and Jim Bertrand were elected to three year terms. Synod Assembly Delegates Elected: Mary Alice Hack, Kim Plata, Ken Lysen, Travis Clements and I were elected to serve as your Synod Assembly Delegates. Sale of Property: After discussion centering on pros and cons of selling a strip of property, or approximately 9,200 square feet, along the northeast side of the parking lot between Advent and the Greenhouses, the motion to sell for $90,000 and including reconfiguration and repaving of the parking lot was passed. The reconfiguration of the parking lot should provide 38 additional parking stalls.
Upcoming Council Activities: On February 9 the Council will attend a retreat focusing on the roles and responsibilities of representing the ministries of Advent, operating procedures and review of Church Policies and Procedures. The first council meeting for the new Council members will be February 12 where election of our 2013 officers will take place as called for in our Constitution. On February 23 the Council will participate in awareness session about the Adult Faith Formation Series of Classes being developed for Advent by members Kim Plata and Kim Hall. The classes will be a three part adult faith formation series intended to introduce the Lutheran faith and Advent Lutheran Church to new and/or potential members as well as current members. It will also cover recognition of our spiritual gifts and ways of tapping into people's passions and styles for serving
In closing, I would especially like to recognize again and thank those staff that have recently left or will soon leave their positions. Thank you goes to Colleen Hilton for the excellent leadership provided our Sunday school, Nursery and VBS programs during her interim year and to Trinity Moffat for the years of service provided as our Church Custodian who leaves her position in February. Finally, thanks to all of you who serve on ministry teams and to those volunteers who come in daily and weekly to help with many tasks around the office and church facilities. Blessing to each of you and your families,

Missing Something? Is your child missing a jacket, or have you lost your reading glasses?
Check the lost and found box in the Fellowship Hall. Items left in the box at the end of each month will be donated to Goodwill.
Save the date: March 3rd On that date, Rev. Scott Postlewait will be with us to share information about Lutheran Campus Ministries.
Lutheran Campus Ministries are located near the campuses of several colleges in Washington State. Scott is the pastor at Covenant House near the University of Washington campus. Covenant House serves as a “home away from home” for many students, providing a comfortable, low stress place to worship, eat, study, or just relax for a time before going back to the grind of classes.
Advent is one of many Lutheran Churches in the area who give support to Covenant House and similar organizations at other campuses. A special offering will be taken. Thank you for
your Input
Thank you to all who participated in the small group sessions. We are busy working on the Ministry Site Profile that will be given to the Synod as a description of Advent. Check out the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

The Columbarium committee is looking for donations
of river rocks to surround their new fountain. The
thought is that if everyone from the congregation
donates a rock or two from their own garden that we’ll
have enough to create a river of memory rocks for the
columbarium garden. Rocks are being collected in the
red tub in the Fellowship Hall.
