L o n g e s t N i g h t S e r v i c eL o n g e s t N i g h t S e r v i c eL o n g e s t N i g h t S e r v i c e The Christmas season is often marked by expressions of joy, excitement and happiness. It is a time for families to gather in celebration and for churches to gather in worship, pointing to the hope that is found in the coming Christ Child. However, this time of joyful expectation is sometimes overshadowed by the pain and hurt that many experience during this season when their grief and sorrow are put into sharp contrast with the world’s merriment. On December 21st, the longest night of the year, we will be offering a Longest Night Service, also known as a “Blue Christmas” service. This worship opportunity acknowledges that grief, loss, struggles, and darkness can make it difficult to share in the traditional joyous celebrations of Christmas. Join us in Lilly Chapel at 6:00 p.m. along with Susie Hyman, a Celtic Harpist, who will share her gifts with us. All are welcome as we seek the light that “shineth in darkness.”

The Children’s Advent Book is available on the church’s web site www.first-scots.org. We hope you will find this book to be a resource for your children and the entire family throughout the season of Advent.

FIRST (SCOTS) PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Building On The Rock

Have you submitted your stone and commitment cards for 2015? What follows was written by our Pastor Emeritus J. Phillips Noble and appears in his book Words and Images That Seep Into the Soul.

Our Building Stones

God gives us stones to build our lives. We can do with them what we will.

Some seek to build a structure that reaches to the sky, And like the tower of Babel, Confusion reigns. Some build a high containing wall Around their selfish happiness, To shut out the intrusion of God or man. Some build a personal mansion of pride And install a drawbridge over a moat, Hoping to be safe from all alarms. Some build a solid and ample house, And from it are laid stepping stones That lead into other less privileged lives, And they daily pass over the set stones On errands of love and mercy.

God gives us stones to build our lives. We can do with them what we will.

Session Notes Elders joined the deacons of the church in an officers’ retreat. Joan Gray’s Sailboat Church was

reviewed and all officers covenanted to forty days of prayer for First (Scots) beginning the day after Thanksgiving and ending on January 6 (Epiphany).

Jean Marterre and David Hoskinson reported on plans for God’s Gift Shop for 2014 Christmas Season

The Education sub-committee recommended three education sessions and these sessions were approved as follows: The Rev. James Rogers will lead a combined Sunday school study of the General Assembly

approved paper “Hope in the Lord Jesus Christ” on January 18. Dr. Daniel Massie will present on the Essential Tenets and the history of that debate to a

combined Sunday school class on February 15. The Rev. Margaret Beamguard will lead a combined Sunday school discussion of the General

Assembly approved paper “Presbyterian Understanding and Use of Holy Scripture: Biblical Authority and Interpretation” on March 8.

The 2015 Montreat Worship & Music Conference June 28-July 3

Rising 4th through 12th graders have a great opportunity to enjoy a week summer camp while singing, playing instruments, performing in concerts, and enjoying many other activities with other kids from all over the US. For more information about the conference visit http://www.presbymusic.org/montreat.html, and contact Ricard Bordas or Charlotte Gillespie for pre-registration.

“It was so much fun! All of the instructors were fun and knew what they were talking about. We made friends in all of our classes. It was awesome singing in such a big group that was enthusiastic and able to sing in four to six parts at a time. The only thing that would make it better would be more kids from First (Scots). We want to go back next year!” Lilly and Helen Gillespie from Montreat 2014

Bethelwoods High School Youth Retreat

First (Scots) high school youth and adults traveled to Camp Bethelwoods this past November. The group joined youth and adults from local Presbyterian churches, participated in exciting recreation, small groups, worship, and more, and explored the theme of “Life is a Highway.”

First (Scots) youth Cole Shubert and Charlotte Zuraw did a great job leading the retreat as they both serve on our Presbytery Youth Council.
