Advent is a time to pray and prepare. Advent is wilderness time. John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness announcing the coming of Christ and calling all people to reorient their lives to receive him. For this reason the baptismal font is drained and empty during Advent, to recall our thirsting for God.

GATHERING PRE-SERVICE MUSIC OPENING SENTENCE

Nov. 29 Stand up and raise your heads, 1 Advent your redemption is drawing near.

Dec. 6 Prepare the way of the Lord, 2 Advent All flesh shall see the salvation of God.

Dec. 13 I am sending a messenger before you, 3 Advent who will prepare your way before you.

Dec. 21 Here I am the servant of the Lord, 4 Advent let it be with me according to your word.

Please stand at the sound of the organ. Please join in singing:

We gather in the darkness, longing for the light as we pray “Come, Lord Jesus.” Light is carried into the worship space and transferred to the candles on the wreath.

“Ani ma’amin” is Hebrew and means “I believe”. The entire text, sung as part of Jewish liturgy recited each weekday morning, is “I believe with perfect faith in the coming Messiah, and even if the Messiah is delayed, I believe.”.

BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH We thank you, O God, for this wheel of time marking our days of preparation for Christ’s advent. As we light these candles, rouse us from sleep and kindle within us the fire of your Spirit, that we may be ready to receive the Lord when he comes again. Enlighten us with your grace and prepare our hearts to welcome Christ with joy and sing his advent among us. We ask this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen.

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY

1 Advent Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merci-ful protection alert us to the threatening dangers of our sins, and redeem us for your life of justice, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

2 Advent Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son. By his coming give to all the people of the world knowledge of your salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

3 Advent Stir up the wills of your faithful people, Lord God, and open our ears to the preaching of John, that, rejoicing in your salvation, we may bring forth the fruits of repentance;

The collects for Advent are known as the “Stir Up” prayers, to stir up God’s power, inviting Christ to come, and asking Christ to “stir up” our hearts and wills as we wait.

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

4 Advent Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. With your abundant grace and might, free us from the sin that binds us, that we may receive you in joy and serve you always, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

SILENCE FOR REFLECTION PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please join in singing the refrain at the direction of the cantor.

The Assisting Minister will offer petitions and invite the Assembly to do so.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. A time of silence follows.

Giving thanks for all who have gone before us and are at rest, rejoicing in the communion of all the saints, we commend ourselves, one another, and our whole life to you,

Prayer is the posture of faith as we wait for the light. We pray in silence and we sing our intercessions.

The Presider concludes the prayers. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS

MEAL PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND GIFTS OFFERING PRAYER

God of abundance, we bring before you the precious fruits of your creation, and with them our very lives. Teach us patience and hope as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You comforted your people with the promise of the Redeemer, through whom you will also make all things new in the day when he comes to judge the world in righteousness. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Blessed are you, Lord God of heaven and earth. You sent Jesus into the darkness of our world to be your light among us.

Jesus came in weakness to dwell among us and to live as one of us, Showing forth your love to all the world.

Jesus comes among us now, risen in our midst, Pouring out your love through his life-giving wounds.

Jesus will come again joining earth and heaven as one.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

We proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Send your Holy Spirit, O God, upon this bread and cup And those who gather at this table share in this heavenly food.

Kindle hope in our hearts and in our lives, Uniting us with Christ who lives and reigns With you and the Holy Spirit, One God now and forever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Presider breaks the bread in silence and invites the Assembly to the Table.

God fills the hungry with good things. Taste and see that the Lord is good. SHARING BREAD AND CUP All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the di-rection of the ushers. You may either kneel or stand. You may dip the bread into the red wine or drink di-rectly from the Cup. Grape juice is available as are gluten-free wafers. Please let the ministers at the Ta-ble know if this is your preference. Those who do not wish to commune are welcomed to come to the Table with arms crossed across the chest for a blessing.

Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you.

Welcome Visitors: We welcome all who worship with us today.

Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us.

Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you.

Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addi-tion to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a chang-ing table.

Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups” you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service.

Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or email changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitaliza-tions. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the “check in desk” in the church gathering area.

Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportuni-ties for service and study.

Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often.
